About Crab-eating macaque

The crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis), also known as the long-tailed macaque and referred to as the cynomolgus monkey in laboratories, is a cercopithecine primate native to Southeast Asia. A species of macaque, the crab-eating macaque has a long history alongside humans. The species has been variously seen as an agricultural pest, a sacred animal, and, more recently, the subject of medical experiments.
The crab-eating macaque lives in matrilineal social groups of up to eight individuals dominated by females. Male members leave the group when they reach puberty. It is an opportunistic omnivore and has been documented using tools to obtain food in Thailand and Myanmar. The crab-eating macaque is a known invasive species and a threat to biodiversity in several locations, including Hong Kong and western New Guinea. The significant overlap in macaque and human living space has resulted in greater habitat loss, synanthropic living, and inter- and intraspecies conflicts over resources.
-Etymology
Macaca comes from the Portuguese word macaco, which was derived from makaku, a word in Ibinda, a language of Central Africa (kaku means monkey in Ibinda). The specific epithet fascicularis is Latin for a small band or stripe. Sir Thomas Raffles, who gave the animal its scientific name in 1821, did not specify what he meant by the use of this word.
In Indonesia and Malaysia, the crab-eating macaque and other macaque species are known generically as kera, possibly because of their high-pitched cries.
The crab-eating macaque has several common names. It is often referred to as the long-tailed macaque due to its tail, which is often longer than its body. The name crab-eating macaque refers to its being often seen foraging beaches for crabs. Another common name for M. fascicularis is the cynomolgus monkey, from the name of a race of humans with long hair and handsome beards who used dogs for hunting according to Aristophanes of Byzantium, who seemingly derived the etymology of the word cynomolgus from the Greek κύων, cyon 'dog' (gen. cyno-s) and the verb ἀμέλγειν, amelgein 'to milk' (adj. amolg-os), by claiming that they milked female dogs. This name is commonly used in laboratory settings.
-Characteristics
The body length of the adult, which varies among subspecies, is 38-55 cm (15-22 in) with relatively short arms and legs. Males are considerably larger than females, weighing 5-9 kg (11-20 lb) compared to the 3-6 kg (6.6-13.2 lb) of females. The tail is longer than the body, typically 40-65 cm (16-26 in), which is used for balance when they jump distances up to 5 m (16 ft). The upper parts of the body are dark brown with light golden brown tips. The under parts are light grey with a dark grey/brown tail. Crab-eating macaques have backwards-directed crown hairs which sometimes form short crests on the midline. Their skin is black on their feet and ears, whereas the skin on the muzzle is a light grayish-pink color. The eyelids often have prominent white markings and sometimes there are white spots on the ears. Males have a characteristic mustache and cheek whiskers, while females have only cheek whiskers. Crab-eating macaques have a cheek pouch which they use to store food while foraging. Females show no perineal swelling.
-Distribution and habitat
The crab-eating macaque's native range encompasses most of mainland Southeast Asia, from extreme southeastern Bangladesh south through the Malay Peninsula and Singapore, the Maritime Southeast Asia islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, offshore islands, the islands of the Philippines, and the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. This primate is a rare example of a terrestrial mammal that violates the Wallace line, being found out across the Lesser Sunda Islands. It lives in a wide variety of habitats, including primary lowland rainforests, disturbed and secondary rainforests, shrubland, and riverine and coastal forests of nipa palm and mangrove. It also easily adjusts to human settlements and is considered sacred at some Hindu temples and on some small islands but as a pest around farms and villages. Typically, it prefers disturbed habitats and forest periphery.

Not new born about two weeks old the unbilicord is fallen off he can walk but still small so she must be setting up the schedule off feeding and independence. You can tell she dont like to b clinged on when looking for food. If she was rejecting him or abonaning it trust sho would of did it long ago. Also she wouldnt pick him up when she moves

He can't walk, he can barely crawl. And his chord looks like it just fell off. Putting him over two days, but less than 6 since he's still barely able to crawl. The definition of a newborn for these monkeys, means within two weeks old. Not necessarily meaning she just gave birth to it an hour ago, like it seems like you think it must mean judging by your verbage.

Both Mom and male infant are hybrids . Monkeys have been raising their cubs for a millenia without intervention from humans so I don't think anyone really is an expert on what is the right or wrong way to put them on a schedule. They know what they read in books and Wikipedia (rolling my eyes with a mention of the latter) and are more than ready to sound off as to the RIGHT way it should be done . This infant is not skinny, hie eyes are not sunken and he is quite active. So,he's fine.

@@lolaburgospena4241 baby did not. In fact I have hunger, mama was simply putting baby on a schedule. This baby is very plump and is perfectly healthy. If this baby eats all day, it will not sleep in the treetops all night. And that makes it dangerous for predators.

Teva is a good mother, Tara did the same thing to Tia and she turned out just fine. She’s not starving the baby monkey, she just letting him know he drinks when she says so. Remember this is just a clip not 24 hrs worth of footage and later on at 16:59 she is nursing the baby. Relax, he isn’t starving and he is healthy. They are wild animals, not humans.

Whatever ever the age 2 days/ 2 weeks I really doubt you would deny your baby food, the 1st month is imperative to nutrition for survival.

It kills me when people say that, i'd bet you wouldn't deny your baby food atleast I hope not. People don't realize that macaques have a very high metabolism that's why they feed so often it's not just a want to eat but more of a Need to feed.

Monkey moms don't have that privilege so the baby bites, stretches, etc mom's nips. I've even seen a comment stating that the moms don't feel pain in their nips...go figure 🥺

This must have been an incredibly aggressive, baby, her nipples if you will pause the video and look are actually bleeding and this baby is less than a few days old already
They seem to be doing fine by the clips in this video. I can tell that this mom has seen it all. She knows every trick in the book on sneaking back to the milk bar without permission. She seems to be a little temperamental which is normal to see in an older wild monkey mom. As with most of these videos, so far, the first few minutes is the mom “rejecting” the baby. When in reality, she’s rejecting the babies request for milk, what they don’t show, until the very end, is long nursing bouts. That content doesn’t get the best views. If this baby wasn’t nursing enough to sustain his organs or energy, he wouldn’t be alive, or he would be severely lethargic and not able to move and/or protest. Also, we wouldn’t even know this baby existed if she rejected him.

It’s not a newborn! She’s not mistreating him, she’s putting him on a schedule so that he doesn’t stay glued to her nips 24/7 and that’s what they should do, not allow them to be on their 24/7 and a lot more of the moms should be doing it!
Some monkey mom's start to soon trying to wean the babies. Hes older than couple weeks because he can walk well. Just tiny! So maybe she needs to vatch up on her intake before baby drains all her energy out.
Average weening age is 12-14 months, not a guess not an opinion but a fact so a few weeks old is NOWHERE even close to weening age.
A lot of these babies learn to walk on the second day, look at Tara and her babies. She starts putting them on a schedule, not weaning on the first day. And by the second and third day, her babies can walk because she did not let them just clean to the chest. It makes them immediate walkers. That’s what Teva is doing. This baby is just a couple days. Most people don’t understand this, but the umbilical cord falls off in about the first 18 to 24 hours.
Dang this mama is not playin thats what im talkin about! That baby jumps or hollers at her giving her attitude she disciplines it!!! Reminds me of Sippy and Sippo! Only thing is, she doesnt wanna let it nurse at all!? Baby doesnt have any teeth yet so cant eat food, needs milk.. Its not time to wean either maybe decrease milk but def not wean or even close! I haven't seen her feed the baby at all.. Such an adorable baby though, it still has a hard time walking an stuff so its not very old at all.. I bet its umbilical cord hasnt been off long..
