I watched Nico’s watch roundtable with George and Andrew the Voice yesterday and this one today. What comes through clearly in this format is the love, passion, and especially the sincerity that everyone has about watches. Of course, taking the piss out of each other makes these shows truly entertaining! You’re like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour for watches. You guys should do a ComicCon-like panel at the next Watches and Wonders. That is one show I’d fly anywhere to attend!

The problem with the Rolex brand is too many people have them. You go to dinner with friends and all the men have a Submariner !
Friends with teenagers and a degree of wealth, spoil their children on their 18 and 21st birthdays with Rolex watches.
They used to be a luxury brand to aspire too. When your friend’s teenage children wear them and have never worked, suddenly the shine disappears !
That means you look elsewhere . . . . . You want to wear something more individual. Have to say this is where Bamford comes into play ! But i’ve just bought a beautiful Tissot 2000 and a Bamford Tag RUF. Much more exciting !

Today is a totally different story and honestly it has changed my perspective on Rolex. Sure it is a great brand and they make great watches however the hype has totally ruined the experience. It has moved me to Tudor and omega and honestly some of these new micro brands are much cooler to wear and for less money.

As a very proud owner of a Fears, I can't sing their praises high enough. They're just excellent. I've worn mine - an Archival 1930 Small Seconds - on several life occasions because it's the watch I feel the very most at home in. I love it, and it feels right. I've got a moderate collection, and I don't wear my Fears everyday. But no matter the watch I'm enjoying, I'll think about the Fears. I'll think about my love for watches. And its a real grounding point for me in the watch world now. It's the first watch I've ever agonized over. And the service, the quality, the sense that this is a business that acts with the weigh of 175 years of history - It's all *really* there. You feel it, from the box it arrives in with an exquisitely hand-tied bow and lovely unique deep blue stain, to the little documentations with it that you really could just own that one watch - or maybe it an another fears - for most of the rest of your life.
    On the Archival specifically:
There are 175. Of those 136 are two-hand models with a new old-stock movement from the 1960s (I believe); There are 39 of the Small-Seconds, which house a movement from the mid-30s.
The series is numbered individually on the case back from 1846 - the year of first founding - to 2021 - the 175th anniversary.
Numbers 1846-1976 and 2016-2021 are the two hand model, representing the active years. Numbers 1977-2015 are the small seconds, in recognition of the 39 years of dormancy.
Number 1846 has been provided to the collection of the Bristol Museum, and I believe one or two others were retained by Fears to commemorate their history in their collection, meaning ~172 are available for private ownership. All 39 small seconds are either sold or otherwise accounted for. A number of two-hand models are available from retail.

I'm right there with Adrian. I have this inner talk where I caution myself not to jump into the sea and wrap my arms around the first and biggest creature I see, which in this case is Rolex. If tuna is the chicken of the sea then Rolex is the chicken of the watches. I wish it wasn't but the 28% AND the overall presence doesn't leave much choice. So it's very inevitable and unavoidable to have them on the path. And it's a good gateway drug into the more sophisticated side of watch collecting. So in that sense I think I have to thank them. Good episode by the way. Would have been nice to see what exact era of watch collecting you guys are in now, personally.

We can all “hate” on Rolex right now, just over hyped, not the state or the art in design/movements, not as “exclusive” anymore, boring, etc - but if your AD calls for a Steel Daytona, GMT, Submariner, Skydweller, you’re taking it. But for me, I just bought a 2019 Tudor Black Bay Chronograph S&G for $4k, and absolutely love it. After tears of trying to get a Panda after six other Rolex purchases and two Grand Seiko’s with my AD, I just said whatever on the brand, and frankly the Tudor features a date, and in most every way is as good.

I feel slightly pretentious writing this but having had a Daytona on my wrist for a year, I would rather have any other watch now. I was sucked in like many others and fell for the hype. My everyday watch now is a Werenbach, only €€25000 less expensive than the RD 😀😀

The Submariner is an iconic, beautiful and versatile watch. You can wear it with a suit, a button down shirt and chinos, and with jeans and a t-shirt. I think it looks cool no matter what. I feel sad that everybody has one now, and I felt like a prick during the boom in the last years because I had what could be a downpayment for a house on my wrist. That was never my intention when I bought it ten years ago. Glad the hype is slowly fading.

Imo I think getting a Rolex as a treat when you have a big birthday or a celebration is perfect. Also they don’t loose value so if your not getting a lot of watches in a big watch collection you can’t go wrong. But, when you’ve gotten your 3-5 Rolex watches your kind of done and then you can move on to other brands. There you go.

I think the AD’s make the Rolex experience bad. Now hear me out.
I’ve had my name down on the ‘list’ for quite some time now, and since then bought Tudor, Oris, Duckworth etc and still haven’t had a call to say one of the Rolex I want has come into stock. Yet my friend who has no buying history has had 3 Rolex’s this year.
Now don’t get me wrong he’s entitled to, but when he’s had two in 2/3 months (one of them I had my name down for) that’s when I think the experience is totally ruined. The AD’s hold the power and therefore ruin the experience

Part of the lure is the hunt, the story about how you found your Rolex, the price you bargained etc. Furthermore, I came into watches looking for the absolute best value for function & art, Rolex sits perfectly between form, function, craftmanship, and value (at list) before you get into haute horology (in my opinion).

I’m glad I’m not caught up in the Rolex hype, especially given the whole buying experience problem. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to prejudge someone when I see a Rolex on their wrist. I assume it’s a fake if they are not well dressed or I assume the owner isn’t a watch enthusiast and knows little about watches but just wanted to flex the badge if they are. Silly I know but the Rolex ‘image’ is something I want to stay clear of.
In terms of the actual products, they are well made and good watches. I struggle with their designs. I find the Explorer boring, the Daytona ugly and the Yachtmaster, Day Date and Datejust are horrendous. I do like a plain black face no date Submariner, but I think the Seamaster is a technically better watch and it’s cheaper and easier to get. If I were in the market for a sub, I’d buy the Blancpain 50 fathoms all day long. It’s good we all like different things and have different opinions in the watch world but for me, I can’t see me ever owning a Rolex.

My only real problems with Rolex (other than availability) is that they only really have two watch styles (sports where Sub, GMT, Yachtmaster, Seadweller are basically same watch and dress where Datejust, OP, Day Date, Skydweller, Explorer, Milguass, Air King are basically the same. There’s no real impetus to bring something different out. They need display case backs and a few more colour options (e.g. blue or white dial steel Sub).

Regarding the chart, I’m glad to see Breitling’s steady upward trajectory. Combined with some eventual die-off of Rolex hype, this could be good for bringing at least some semblance of balance/competition to that segment of the market in the future: Rolex-Omega-Breitling.

    • @omarion07
      @omarion07 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Wishful thinking but not happening… Not saying Rolex is better than Breitling or Omega but it does not compete in the same universe as the other two. Rolex is in the stratosphere of the holy trinity based on brand cachet and desirability without providing high horology. Hate it or love it that’s the situation now and don’t see it changing anytime soon.

I will probably never own a Rolex. I had surrendered to this realisation and had settled on aiming for a vintage Omega or a Tudor Black Bay 58 as my aspirational watch... until Andrew mentioned Connery's Rolex during his time as Bond and I found myself shifting my sights in terms of first purchases upon winning the lottery.
I am a teacher. Barring a miracle a Rolex will always be beyond my reach, and to be honest I believe I am content with that. Still, it remains a "luxury" watch for me, and who knows.
Finally, in regards to whether or not I believe Adrian about his never having been to a strip club, being married myself I would never cast aspersions on another publicly challenged husband. That does not change the fact that the disturbing image that popped into my head was of Adrian insisting an "exotic dancer" should dance for him whilst wearing his Kermit and singing "It's not easy being green." (Shudder).
