It's so nice to hear Hattie McDaniel talk normally and not stereotypically. Even though she technically was not the "lead" of this television show, she certainly leads it.
@@suebursztynski2530 True, but heavily censored studio system Hollywood didn't give her much of a choice. Now, Hollywood has no excuse to continue replicating the trope, no matter how many Green Books and Blind Sides suggest otherwise.
Well, a clip from "Ruby Dandridge and Lizabeth Scott in Dead Reckoning" used to be available on my channel till some money-grubbing media company complained. Apparently there's no such thing as "fair use" on TH-cam.
Hattie McDaniels is one of my favorite black movie actress she was a true Hollywood legend. She was a very talantive gifted who knew her craft very well I will always admired and respect her for her contribution for her acting in classics movies I love her acting and all her movies. God bless her Rip. It very sad that we had losted a very talented gifted actress much too soon. As for Ruby Dandridge that another story I don't like her at all. And she was one of the most untalentatived person to act in the history of Hollywood.. Plus I think she was a terrible horrible mother towards her daughters Vivien and Dorothy. She was a very selfish person who only care about herself and her female lovers. She could had care less about Vivien and Dorothy how they were dealing with being unloved unwanted abuse sexual abuse PTS depression alcoholism and suicidal. She should had won award for being the world most terrible lousy and neglectful mother in the history of motherhood.
@bambizzoozled It's possible to make those assertions but not so easy to justify them. As you pointed out, there's a big difference between Beulah and Florance. There's also a big difference between the George and Louise Jefferson characters and Florence .
@bkatayab Ruby Dandridge was married when she was young but left her husband (while pregnant with Dorothy) and moved to Los Angeles because she wanted a career in show business. Ruby then had a lesbian relationship with a woman named Geneva Williams who managed Ruby's home and children. Once Geneva took responsibility for the children Ruby was indifferent to her children and never seemed to notice how harsh Geneva treated them.
Ruby paved the way for her daughter Dorthy who was one of Hollywoods great inspiring black woman actresses Carmen Jones was most remembered by all.Dorthy played more serious movie roles.
This is completely beside the point but I'd be very curious to see what Hattie McDaniel's hair look like out of the bun. Her hair was covered a lot and she wore a lot of protective styles for these roles. I'm sure it was beautiful
Don't put them down for playing maids. What y'all think some of us would be doing back then? Standing on the corner begging, "brother can you spare a dime"?
The NAACP got on Hattie McDaniel's case about playing a maid in "Gone With The Wind" but Hattie fired back and told the NAACP what role did they think she was gonna play Rhett Butler's wife?
@Limekiln71 It does appear that he enjoys pushing other people's buttons but your personal issues with @bambizzoozled really have nothing to do with this clip. Please don't use this area for personal attacks.
I have absolute respect for the woman and men, of color, with skills, taking jobs knowing the lines white people wrote, shameful, and gave it their best. It was a different and difficult time. I'm still appalled to this day how humans, people can think there's a difference! In my 55 yrs I never thought for once, the difference in color of skin who was my friend, who I held the door for, who was entertaining me, who I thanked, who I said goidmorning to. 55 yrs of my life, heck, I'm so tired of the bullcrap of this world and color of your/my skin. I just don't understand, I hope when I'm gone , we are past this ungodly ritual, this uncreator manifestation, this inhuman lack of love for one another. We all have one thing I common. "HOPE" spread the love!!! ❤

LMAO!!! Ruby Dandridge's laugh sounds like an Elmo doll!!! I find it so damn pathetic that Hattie McDaniel's dying wish to be buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with all the other stars that died was denied simply because of her color. I know years later they right a wrong but the keywords there are "years" and "later".
For those who are not familiar with early 20th century black cinema, many black actors/actresses were instructed to change the tone of their voices to make it more comical for the movie audiences. Ruby Dandridge the mother of the glamorous Dorothy Dandridge, I'm sure had a normal speaking voice. White audiences enjoyed seeing African Americans portrayed as lazy, silly, dumb, or slow, which amused whites and was very accepted. Mantan Moreland the black actor who played Birmingham in Charlie Chan movies was often portrayed as slow and not too bright. In real life he was a very successful and wealthy actor, who sounded nothing like the character who he was known for playing.
You mean so the characters look stupid or uneducated or annoying like Fran Fine and Bernadette Walowitz and Karen Walker and Cat Valentine and Edith Bunker
The way Ruby Dandridges lover Geneva was portrayed abusing (sexually) Dorothy, it makes me depressed to look at her. It just goes to show how we live a lifetime and not know what really happens to folks. Being a Lesbian is one thing....having that special friend abuse a daughter is entirely different. E-ew and shame on you Ruby, you should have had control over all that!
MzSarenaX Ruby wasn't an award winning actress but she was a well known actress, she was a contracted studio actor(always working, she was known in her time!) acting before and during Dorothy's time in film! And Hattie was the only black Oscar winner for 24 years, the only black female winner for 59 years...who else would she share the screen with if not another well known blacktress!?
They knew what they were doing, creating a image that kept us perpetual helpless helpers to this day!!! Never sexy never beautiful just the hired hands!!!
M. Palmer, stop the BS, then how would you explain the show Julia played by the wonderful Diane Carole; she was an RN on the show in the 60’s;, so stop with the race cars BS, it’s getting F’ing old!
Susan Santamaria Why don’t you make your own comment independently? Rather you pig tail my own expression to come with your verbal assault?? Type what you feel as you watch do NOT come spewing your nonsense based on my freedom to express myself. That’s so rude we should also learn to respect other ppl views without disrespecting the person. Theirs no longer a space for ppl to be silent to express their own feelings. Am going to say it again!!! HISTORICALLY BLACK WOMEN WERE NEVER ALLOWED TO EXPRESS OR SEEN IN A SEXUAL WAY!!! Am black lived 1/2 a century so I lived it I read history!! What are u at odds with my views for? Have your own views!!! U are entitled to!!!
One more thing I don't knock what Hattie McDaniels had to do make a honest living to survive when racism and Jim Crowe was at it strongest peak at that time. When most blacks at that time were still struggling to make ends meat to take care of themselves and their families constantly worrying about when they are going to get their next meals and keeping roof over their heads.Inspite of how terrible horrid and discussing racism of Jim Crowe that had exist at that time. Hattie McDaniels was making a very good living had a very Beautiful house dressing beautifully with very nice cars to drive and making decent amount of money to live on.Making $700 a week which wasn't bad in those day compare to those who were working in real domestic household in those days working themselves death on a meager $7 a week slaving their guts off not being treated with respect and dignity not getting any type of promotion with higher pay for their hard work and still living in poverty still struggling to take care of themselves and their families. I don't blamed her Iam not mad at her for doing what she had to do to live good at that time. I would had done exactly same if I was around at that time.
I said that Ruby KNEW Geneva, meaning, she knew what she was up to.and just didn't care. I can't stand to hear that cackle from the video. Gotta go. Have a good night.
@@naturalkinkycurlymarie7496I know the children would be scared, but Geneva was already too harsh and severe with her daughters. Plus, they surely suffered signs of trauma that clearly impacted Dorothy's life later. If Ruby didn't know, then she'd be a terrible mother because she constantly left her daughters at the mercy of a monster when she was supposed to keep them from harm. I don't know which is worse, being aware or unaware of the abuse. Plus it was the early nineteenth century. I'm sure these things got kicked under the carpet far too many times.
Yup Dorothy looks a lot like her mom the same girlish face and probably the same figure if her mom wasn't overweight. Say what you will Ruby was instrumental in getting Dorothy and Vivian into movies. As a young woman she saw her children were talented and took them to Hollywood. A bold move for a young, single,Black mom back then.

Both of these actresses were from a lineage of black performers--Hattie McDaniel was the sister of Etta and Sam, and, of course, Ruby was the mother of Dorothy Jean.
As a viewer, I just enjoy seeing shows that I watched when I was a small child, starring some of the finest black comic actors. You can't know about the social interactions of anyone here. How about yourself?
Yes, Ruby Dandridge was a lesbian. There is a particularly notorious story told by Dorothy about Ruby's partner, Geneva Williams "checking" Dorothy's hymen by inserting her fingers in her vagina after she returned from an innocent date.
Wait y’all so Dandridge let her woman sexually assault Dorothy ? She was such a star I never heard anything like that. I am disgusted. What an evil sick soul. But let’s not forget Dorothy admitted her ONLY child who was mentally challenged into a nut house and went on with her career. The apple didn’t fall far I guess. My baby has autism he is non verbal and it is hard but I be damned if I just toss my baby away . I had to resign from the fed gov it’s been two yrs. I could’ve easily tossed him in a group home so that I can continue making my salary and not having g to go without the things I’m used to but I love my child and couldn’t even live one sec knowing he was with complete strangers. And I can’t Hardly stand to lol at Ruby knowing who she really was . A money hungry sick bitch but I digress .
Dorothy Dandridge's child was born in 1943 and during that time most severely brain-damaged children ended up in institutions. So don't be judgmental using today's standards. Dorothy was divorced soon after the child was born, and then suffered severe financial losses and went bankrupt. She couldn't afford to give the child the care she needed and had to give up her parental rights, making the child a ward of the state of California.
Adding to @ikachina comment.. Dorothy went through major financial loss in the early to mid 1960s. She had to file for bankruptcy and divorced from her second husband Jack Denison, who allegedly abused her while they were married. She also discovered that the people who were handling her finances took over $150,000 and she owed $139,000 in back taxes. As a result, Dorothy faced foreclosure on her home and had to sell it; moved into a small apartment.
One point that's lost today with many of the younger folk is that the race issue in USA came from white males who wanted the distinction between white and non-white, particularly BLACKS. This is why they came up with the (1) drop rule: (1) drop black=black. Black folk historically were not focused on race the way whites have always been and were accepting of differences. However, today white supremacy has poisoned everything. AMERICA is the anagram: I AM RACE. So it has been but not much longer.
If it wasn't for these black woman acting like they did black people would not be able to to do the things they do right now they paved the way for black actress they had family to take care of of they did the best they could do considering the time and the way things were back then this all they allowed blacks to do back then unless you were very fair skinned like Lena Horn and Dorthy Danridge people were always knocking them for the roles they played these were very strong wemon and men who played these types of roles the blacks and white people were against them but they did what they had to do and now they made history paving the way for the next generation and look what they have accomplished and I thank them now you see black people in all types of roles and their still fighting for the same thing as in yester year.
Dorothy Dandridge suffered alot under her mother's lesbian lifestyle with sexual abuse. These ladies could make $700.00 a week or $7.00 back then which would you choose as Hattie said.
In addition to very harsh treatment, Geneva also sexually abused the girls. One particularly despicable incident was portrayed in the movie "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge." After Dorothy returned from an innocent date, Geneva checked her vagina to see if she had sex with her date.

JuJuJuBe SoStupid lmaooooooo, I think it is him I read somewhere he was a part of the show
Yeah, it is him. he has a distinctive voice. Ruby wasn't no bad looking woman, nice hair and a pretty face. that's why Dorothy was so pretty, but Pretty or not, that's beside the point. she was mean and stupid. and i don't forgive her for letting My Dorothy be abused by that wretched woman or her sister for that matter.
JuJuJuBe SoStupid dorthy dandridge was abused? I didn't know that.
Oh, Yeah, Didn't you know that Dude? Her and her sister. By Their Mom's stupid Sadistic, Pigmalian of a lesbian lover. But, Our dear Dorothy Rose above all that, became very famous and successful, and was always very Talented.
It's so nice to hear Hattie McDaniel talk normally and not stereotypically. Even though she technically was not the "lead" of this television show, she certainly leads it.
She was once asked about how she felt playing maids, and said she would rather play a maid than be one. 😊
Ms. McDaniel said it was better to play the role of a maid in a movie than to actually being a maid.
It sounds like Tommy Chong daughter Rae Dawn Chong imitiated Ruby Dandridge on the Color Purple
Might Ruby have imitated Butterfly McQueen's ditsy little girl's highpitched voice in Gone With the Wind (1939)?
@bambizzoozled
It's possible to make those assertions but not so easy to justify them. As you pointed out, there's a big difference between Beulah and Florance. There's also a big difference between the George and Louise Jefferson characters and Florence .
Sad video of these actreses protraying themselves as something they are not.
Sad indeed but first step to the march

@114157897598771215363 Most actors (of any race) as a career, play characters who they really are not.
JudgeJulieLit That's why it's called "acting," not "being."
ruffdraft it was the times, unfortunately.
@bkatayab
Ruby Dandridge was married when she was young but left her husband (while pregnant with Dorothy) and moved to Los Angeles because she wanted a career in show business. Ruby then had a lesbian relationship with a woman named Geneva Williams who managed Ruby's home and children. Once Geneva took responsibility for the children Ruby was indifferent to her children and never seemed to notice how harsh Geneva treated them.
I read the article where you quoted this from.
@@stephanieclanton1212 -- Thanks. I wrote that article.
The entire show is available at archive org. Search for "The Beulah Show"

I loved it!
Don't put them down for playing maids. What y'all think some of us would be doing back then? Standing on the corner begging, "brother can you spare a dime"?
Thats true blscks didnt have many choices back then
The NAACP got on Hattie McDaniel's case about playing a maid in "Gone With The Wind" but Hattie fired back and told the NAACP what role did they think she was gonna play Rhett Butler's wife?
i think the old tv show Hazel was supposed to be the white version of beulah!
not quite as good
I love these vignettes; BEAUTIFUL spoken word artists.
i know who she talking 2 on the phone, its scatman crothers!
I dont think so, sounds like Eddie Rochester Anderson.
@Limekiln71
It does appear that he enjoys pushing other people's buttons but your personal issues with @bambizzoozled really have nothing to do with this clip. Please don't use this area for personal attacks.
What has been written about Dandridge is that she was horrible horrible horrible to her daughters. That cackle equals chalk on a board.
she was horrible to her daughters then let that nasty women beat them
+daniel stanwyck don't believe anything you read about Hollywood
i know she didnt care
+Dominique Jennings Her "lover" not only beat them, she allegedly raped Ruby's daughter, Dorothy.
+MrMaxismybaby she did what that's why Dorothy beat her ass
Wow are you serious I love this I get to see Dorothy mother Ruby in action in real footage she's nice looking and talented .I don't think that's her real voice I think it was Just her character in the role lol.r.I.p.Ruby,Dorothy, Vivian.

omg her voice so hiiiiiggh...came to see Hattie but u know.....OREO (LOL)
Oh my god her voice! lol
She was such an awesome person. She used her hard earned dollars to lift others up. I got that from her personally. It was Hattie that I liked
Her name is OREO...
I believe it was spelled Oriole, not oreo.
she died that same year in 1952
Ruby Dandridge passed away in 1987 at a nursing home.
Omg she sounds like a little girl lol Wo..that freaked me out when she first came out talking lol
That's not the voice I was expecting from that woman
But Ruby Dandridge really had a squeaky, annoying voice
OMG her voice, Walt Disney should have hired her...they called her Oreo? 😱
😂💖💖💖💖 Hattie would have made an AMAZING PRESIDENT!!!!

Beautiful Ladies
The way Ruby Dandridges lover Geneva was portrayed abusing (sexually) Dorothy, it makes me depressed to look at her. It just goes to show how we live a lifetime and not know what really happens to folks. Being a Lesbian is one thing....having that special friend abuse a daughter is entirely different. E-ew and shame on you Ruby, you should have had control over all that!
What a shitty time in which to live.
Years from now, some might be saying the same thing about us. Unless you think this is good as it gets.
I'm surprised there isn't any interviews of Ms. Dandridge, she didn't pass away until 87.
Actually Dorothy Dandridge died on September 8, 1965 (aged 42).
I'm referring to Dorothy's mother, Ruby
That voice sounds just like Witch Hazel in the loony toons
I thought the same thing
Dandridge seemed evil and peculiar in this clip. Hattie was too good to share the screen with this other character at her stage in her career.
@@ralphshorts5009 "Blacktress" ... great portmanteau word.

Beulah, who's always in the kitchen, but never seems to know what's cookin'!
This show started on radio. Oriole had to sound a little goofy to get laughs. It carried over to the TV show.
That is clearly Scatman Crothers on the phone.
cute sounding voice
Thank You. 😐
I said that Ruby KNEW Geneva, meaning, she knew what she was up to.and just didn't care. I can't stand to hear that cackle from the video. Gotta go. Have a good night.
Wdym she knew what Geneva was doing?
@@mariahkirkland891 Geneva abused her children, Vivian and Dorothy, even molesting Dorothy. There was no way that Ruby was ignorant of that.
@@artismylife2641 The girls said they never told their mother about that. They were afraid.

How about yourself?
she was a lesbian ruby am i correct
👍👍👍👍
Why the hell did she speak with that awful voice, who in the world can find this amusing?
Dorothy Dandridge and her Mother Ruby are buried in a location together...
Lovely
Yes, so true. There is no such color blind person in existence. race matters, just not the way we think it does.
@ikachina I see your point. I do think she should have noticed her girlfriend abusing Dorthy and they should have told her so things would be better.
