5:59 During the Soeharto era, it was not allowed to speak Mandarin in public and learn Mandarin, so maybe parents were afraid to teach Mandarin to their children, plus there were no Mandarin lessons in the past. It should also be remembered that in ancient times, not all Chinese who moved to Indonesia could speak Mandarin. Mandarin was only used as a unifying language in the 1940s. Previously, Mandarin was a widely spoken regional language around Beijing. So, my ancestor can't speak mandarin even though he comes from China because he comes from the city/province of Guangdong where the majority language is khek. Plus, he doesn't teach the language to his children so none of my family members speak Mandarin. Also, the majority of Chinese who move to Indonesia are from the southern region of China I have studied Mandarin for almost 13 years.
