thanks for the upload reminding us back in the not too distance past when the fences were a proper test, exciting and unpredictable unlike today when its just another long distance chase.

I loved the slow-mo of the jockey cam from behind Joe Tizzard as he flails girlishly and comes off!

there was a big downpour in the Liverpool area on that day and was there was talk of the Saturday being postponed with more history being made with a Sunday National during the spate of inspections

i remember backing red marauder ante post at 66/1 and 50/1 told all my friends to back him what a great year this was

So, if few horses get injured at the National if the ground is soaking wet, should we water the Aintree course heavily before every Grand National?

    Jim McGraths commentary was superb

Yes those were excellent Nationals. Loved Richard Pitman's inputs and miss him as a commentator these days. Never rated Scu as a good commentator and was not surprized when Mick and Richard told him to shut up.
I had napped Red Marauder and Smarty to everyone for two weeks before the race as I knew the going was going to be soft, and got 66/1 myself and when I went to collect my winnings after i had done evening stables, they had kept the bookies open for me!
Richard Guest had told me 6 months earlier he expected RM to win. Notice they had not tied his tail up like they usually did.

tina silver I only got 40/1 on red marauder and 20/1 on smarty. RM jumped terribly for the first circuit.

I've got this on tape. Does anyone know what the classical music is that the BBC used for the runners and riders section before the race?

Gabriel's Oboe was in heavy use at this time. Ennio Morricone.

The course builder must have been smiling looking down at this race, when almost all horses were eliminated. Thats the purpose of the National.

I agree. Nobody wants injury, or suffering, but the spills made the National unique; special, and a thrill to watch. Loved the old Bechers Brook

24.29 says Amberleigh House fell at the Chair. But at the Canal Chair they show Norman Williamson digging Amberleigh House's jockey Warren Marston out of the fence. Unbelievable incompetence by the BBC.

They also had Merry People falling at Becher's first time, but he actually unseated at the next fence, the Foinavon fence.

Exactly, Amberleigh House was the horse that the loose horse hit square in, causing the chaos. In my opinion he would’ve got round and, provided he survived the 19th, beaten red marauder. But then he would’ve been up in the handicap and probably not won in 04, which was a classic

How on earth did the bbc ever offer peter scudamore a commentator's job when he obviously has a stammer .

Beau was terribly unlucky, going best of those left in the race when Carl Llewellyn lost his reins.

    • @Eleventhearlofmars
      @Eleventhearlofmars 4 ปีที่แล้ว

MEECHIO there was still a long way to go, I backed smarty and red marauder and my dad backed beau, the air turned blue when my dad noticed the reins on beau, I couldn’t believe I had the only two horses left running, I obviously started cheering for RM because of the bigger price, I only had £2.50 ew on both horses but it was a nice win still, imagine having the forecast lol.
