Woody belongs in the first-tier lineage of jazz trumpet. What an ear-bending album Rosewood was! His playing opened pathways for improvisation on trumpet in particular, as leveraging 4ths and 5ths to the pentatonic lexicon had been previously only sparsely explored by Freddy and very few others. His warm and dark trumpet sound is instantly recognizable on tender ballads and fiery burners.
Pleased that this appeared like magic this morning. What a treat! Too bad that Italian TV has had the Berlusconi treatment. The USA can only blame the writers strike and our own poor taste. Great video! Thanks for putting the good stuff out there.
Cool to see Steve Turre with two horns on stage like that. Not often something you see from trombone players, but should, IMO. There's a lot of timbral variance between large and small.
Woody Shaw does not play a normal trumpet or Flugelhorn at this gig. It's a cornet-trumpet with a large bell. Hubbard plays it with Hancock on a recording and Nat Adderley almost always plays it. It was an instrument played in Dixieland by Wild Bill Davison and guys like that. But with a different sound and a different concept. Played by Woody the sound is very warm.
Just thought to mention, since the topic is 'ripe'.... (am hoping I don't come across as overweening!) , that Manfred Schoof from Europe is also a super talent on Trumpet and especially Flugelhorn. I couldn't help but be reminded of Manfred, when hearing Woody Shaw here!
Art Farmer, of course, is another giant on the horn, and he played LOTS on the Flugelhorn, but, notably, Woody Shaw uses the instrument differently as regards attack and phrasing, and the velocity factor is also of another level. Art Farmer played fabulous ballads.
