- The Shih Tzu, which literally means ‘Little lion’, are known for their small size and hypoallergenic coats. These toy dogs are very affectionate, and have charming personalities. They are known for their stubborn nature, which makes their training a challenging task. However, they are also smart and trainable, and can be trained easily, by using a correct training approach.
Shih Tzu are very smart and trainable dogs, but their training is relatively difficult. It is because of their stubborn nature and small dog syndrome.
Shih Tzu are not only stubborn but also have independent minds, and that is why, sometimes they like to do things in their own way, and may not actively follow your commands.
Their hard trainability is also because of their 'small dog syndrome', which makes them develop big attitudes and personalities, because of which, sometimes they are not willing to be co-operative and follow their own minds.
However, their stubborn, independent, and small dog nature should not be translated as ‘Less smart or less trainable’. These little dogs are very smart and highly trainable, it is just that their trainability is relatively difficult, and takes time. The best strategy to train these toy dogs is to remain consistent, use positive reinforcement and start early.
In this video, we have explained potty training and crate training of a Shih Tzu.

Oh wow I hear you Barbara….
My new Puppy 14 weeks Totally thinks the same… My silkie toy
I don’t understand why you shouldn’t have a potty area inside and outside at the same time? Oftentimes, living arrangements and/ or weather will make having two spots necessary. Please clarify. Thank you.
What if I want my pup to sleep with me?
I have a doggie door and just rescued an 8-month shih tzu. He quickly learned to use the door, Can I leave him be if he continuous using live him on his own to use it. His previous owner said he was house broke. Been no accidents in the 7 hours I've had him and he let me know when he wanted to go out. Should I put puppy pads by the back door or just let him be?
This is great in theory however what do you do when your pup thinks the pee pad is a chew toy. Help!!!!!!
I had the exact same problem, this might help.. i used paper tape to stick the pee pad down to the floor tight. He stopped chewing on it but now he thinks its a bed 😅😂
I learned for some odd reason shih tzu are aware of the word No. I use No! whenever she does something not okay and she stops. Hope this helps
