Today is the start of our next pole barn build, we actually started 18months ago by draining the hill, it was an absolute bog!
Now it’s dried out, we are starting by pulling out the scrub, dozing it off, then we will dig out the tree stumps, and scrape away the topsoil.
No doubt I’ll need to hire in a larger excavator to dig out the rock!

Hi folks, so let me introduce ourselves, myself and Heather Nimmo live on our 8.5 acre off grid smallholding outside Portpatrick in Southwest Scotland.
Heather purchased the property in August 2011, 10 years ago as a derelict plot of scrub and trees with a small yard and some tumbled down stables.
Immediately a static caravan was sited on site and that’s where the story started. We follow so many stories and posts on Facebook of people saying it can’t be done, I’m not saying the journey has been easy but 10 years later we are here and happier than ever.
Just under a year ago we found out what TH-cam was, and we’ve started doing weekly blogs charting our progress.
We are now building our forever home, a cabin/bothy, we’ve built 3 barns and next year we are going to build a roundwood pole barn.
We have no mains services, we produce our own power from solar, with a battery bank and backup generator, rainwater harvesting, this year we are upgrading our systems and you’ll be able to follow it on our channel.
We’d really appreciate it if everyone could subscribe to our TH-cam channel, ring the bell for weekly notifications and like and share our videos. We also are on Facebook as “Lochnaw Smithy”

Ever thought about attaching a thumb to your mini digger . I've got one on my 1.8 tonner from RSL it's makes things like picking up brush , rocks or whatever so much easier.
Good f picking up logs an cutting them with the chainsaw at waist height to.

Yes I’ve looked at them, was going to make one myself but never got around to it…

@@livingoffgridinscotland I made one first time ...it bent. It lasted long enough to make me realize what a game changer it was think the RSL manual thumb cost about 350-400 so didn't break the bank . If you make one it'll have t be some serious section of steel b worth pricing up materials/time against one off the shelf

@@paulhaworth1824 totally, but I don’t have the funds to spend on anything new just now, I do have some serious steel that came off a Whitlock loader I sold the tractor off of, I just need more hours in the day….
