How to make a router table that fits in a small workshop

  • In some of my last projects I had small parts that needed a chamfer done with the router. To do that I had to screw the part onto another sheet and than balance the router on the part to make the chamfer.
    It wasn’t only a tedious job, the results weren’t stunning either. That’s when I decided that it was time to make a router table that fits my small workshop.

    Using the fence to drill holes and then using the jigsaw to connect the holes for the adjustable fence. Very nice!

    I bought this as a gift for my friend th-cam.com/users/postUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.

      @@mariawaczek4823 i don't really know but for something similar i use some clamps for holding your bicycle seat up. Don't laugh, 😄, they're amazing. Not from aluminium though, but steel. The downside is that you can't clamp more than 4-5 cm of material. But it's enough for me

    "I had this lying around so I am going to use it" Very true, but when you first 'found' the rod in question, you did not discard it, you just knew it was going to come in useful at some point! And that is the real limitation of a small work bench situation, not enough room to store things that you KNOW you will need as soon as you have thrown them, out!
    My work bench is only15 ins deep front to back, so good one chap! good solution to extend bench depth. I have just rebuilt my bench, but if I had seen your vid first I might have made my new top on a base of steel frame ( simple , not heavy) so as to mount the hollow square steel tube. Years ago I used to build my own market stall & used the tube inside tube fitting for quick & safe setting up of the framing. My present new work top has a 2 x 4 inch front bearer side on for strength, but I just might drill out a couple of holes & insert some square hollow tube through that, drill through the far end to mount it & fix the front end with brackets, thanks for the inspiration

      @@Thepracticalengineer Plus when you want to mouont it on a more permanent table you need to purchase a router lift. Not cheap!

    • @MrMartwy
      @MrMartwy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@belgowulf3147 I've seen solutions with a cheap supermarket scissor car jack, and DIY rails, acting as a router lift. The entire cost may be as low as $20-$25 .

    1) How to prepare the workbench I'm going make to be able to add more jigs, fx. a router table (this 20x20 mm solution is a simple, but also a strong and safe way to add jigs), and
    2) How to make a simple, effective, strong and removable router table for my new router that fits the workbench! Win win. :D

    Good. i also installed 2 x Ruler Fence gauges for the Sliding Fence. I just printed out a ruler online
    Recessed 2x groves (Thickness of Printed Paper) in the table ( Left side of "Left" Fence Slot and Right side of "Right" Fence Slot)
    Then glued Ruler into Slot.
    This is to help with Paralell. You could by 2 cheap 150mm Seel Rulers too and install but I was too eager to get the table to work.

    Nice idea. I have a small workshop as well. Clever to use the rods to mount the router. My comment on your construction is that you lose 18mm of working depth. Which is too much. It's more expensive, but I would prefer 10mm Trespa. In this way you have the same strength, win 8mm working depth, and Trespa is very durable and has less resistance. You can also drill/tap in Trespa. To saw Trespa you need a saw blade with flat/rooftype teeth (vlak/daktand) and when routing reduce the velocity and working speed.

    • @Thepracticalengineer
      @Thepracticalengineer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sjaak, trespa zou inderdaad een mooie oplossing geweest zijn hier. Zeker ook voor de weerstand. De diepte die ik verlies is voor mij niet zo'n probleem. Deze frees kan zo diep dat de moet er nog bijna bovenuit komt.
