the lack of the spoiler caused this...hmmm lets think that over a second, tell me how the stock spoiler would have kept him from going off track....he just took turns and passes too fast like we all do in video games so stfu bout that spoiler non sense unless it was a joke.
Slyfoxboy think that over for a few more seconds and realize that automakers add spoilers to increase downforce and reduce lift. the shape of a rear windscreen naturally creates lift at high speed like an aeroplane's wing, which is why most fast cars have some sort of wing or lip on the bootlid. if you remove that then the faster you go the less grip your rear wheels have, because the whole back end is getting lifted by air pressure differentials.
"If you're not prepared to race, you shouldn't be racing" someone is butt hurt they didn't get to drive! But seriously, open track days are not for racing and competition with other drivers! Stay within your limits otherwise things like this happen.
J3ui not if hes spinning out you have to turn in the opposite direction.. look at the tire grooves that he was making he was correcting where the car was turning if he didn't make the necessary corrections he could have spun out of control even more than he already did
Nathan Lam not true kid. when you go off the track, keep the wheel straight and put both feet down. You will not spin out of control. Making corrections like he did only make the situations worse. Love how people on the internet talk like they're experts on a subject they have zero experience on.
Lol. Who wouldn't be? Do you know how much time and effort it takes for these videos. I would be pissed too. Not to mention that dude had no place in trying to beat that 911.
I know the difference between racing and lapping, obviously. I wasn't prepared for the crash, and just started talking about stuff on the fly, it's not like I write scripts and do takes, unless I really flub it. But this was the end of a long weekend of lapping, where the run group had just taken it upon themselves to race each other. Of course he will be allowed back at the track. None of the offs were even black-flag worthy, and the crash happened in a passing zone, it was just an accident
the point where the accident occurred was a clear passing zone, it was simply an accident. NASA doesn't require instructors past the HPDE 1 level, and this was a 3.
yeah!, definetely pusing the car way too hard if his of track 3 times same day and his lucky the motor didnt let go if his keeping those rpms that high...epecially on a stock bottom..
the difference in terms between a spoiler and a wing, is a wing is a surface mounted to the car, in an effort to generate downforce at speed. A Spoiler is a surface mounted to the car, to shape the air better as it leaves either the underneath of the frontend, or the back of the decklid, to avoid turbulence, and achieve better gas mileage, and possibly better top speed.
he didn't really go off 3 times, I counted the first one as 2 offs, as he hit the dirt on both sides of the track..... and yes, this video certainly proves how much safer driving is at the track than on the street. If he went off the road at 90 on the street, it would have been major problems.
It's funny how people on this thread that actually race are sympathetic and understanding. While people that have no experience and just talk a big game are talking shit about the car being shit or the driver. This kind of thing happens to everybody. He is actually out there racing on the limit sharpening his skills and that is awesome.
I ridden shotgun in a friend's car at the Streets of Willow. It's very fun and adrenaline rushing. Crashes happen all the time there and the knew what he was doing. Make sure it's not your daily driver car. You need to be on course to understand why he crashed. That section is narrow and it looks to have the BMW driver's fault. Hopefully he got his Evo back out there racing.
TheTyisAwesome There is a bit more than that going on here. The Cup is lighter, has more power and more tire. The down force created by a functional wing may give him traction but it would also slow down his acceleration and lower the top speed. It wouldn't surprise me if it helped him stick but took away the ability to keep speed or pass the cup car any way. They are just very different machines.
Would a new front splitter at front and a spoiler on rear solve the problem of going off all time? I know the car is on the limit when he has these offs but surely some rear downforce wouldn't hinder but improve high speed cornering. It works for the Porsche Cup Car.
The driver was actually pretty good, he was just pushing the car over its limits. That Porsche probably put down about 250kg of down force so when the 10kg of down force Evo tried to chase it around the high speed corner it just couldn't hold the G's and slid off the track, high speed corners require down force which is something this car didn't posses.
It's about how communicative the car is - steering, suspension, everything. What's so hard to understand about it? EVO X is goes into snappy oversteer just too easily. When it happens on an open Top Gear airfield, it's fun, but when it happens at high speeds on a track or even worse - on a road, it might mean trouble.
That's what happens when you try to chase a car you have no chance of catching a 10 year old GT3 Porsche. He will learn the hard way by trashing his car.
Russ: Dude, i almost had you! Porsche guy: You almost had me? You never had me, you never had your car... Lol but on a serious note, props to Russ on an awesome car. Crashing is part of racing and its the only way you learn.. invest in a set of semi's, turn down the boost a little (like that's going to happen) and just more seat time in general. sorted
+lifehackertips Cup cars are race cars. I worked on Jim Lowe's #64 cup car back in 2007. It was a purpose built race car. Not at all like your standard GT3 or even GT3 RS, which are street legal track cars ( more like GS class racers). A "Tuned" weekend road racer is just not going to be able reach the same limits as a factory race car. Certainly not in any daily driver form. I'm sure that all wheel drive feels confidence inspiring in that EVO at lower limits. He should have learned his lesson the first time. Obviously his car was getting loose where the Porsche wasn't unsettled at all.
+1400IntruderVS "cup cars" are still cars from Porsche factory. They're not tuned by performance shops, it came from the factory like that. Unless you want to say ALL Porsches are race cars, in which case I would not disagree with you. The Evo X was race tuned, says right in the description, and he goes through a long list of "race prep work" done to it at 1:10
lifehackertips Different class. His Evo may be closer to a GS where as the Cup car is GT Cup class. It is big difference. I just think he was silly trying to bite off more than he can chew. He said that EVO was also the car he drives to work. A GT car like the Porsche cup car has lexan windows in the rear, carbon fiber doors (not just the skins) and body panels with no windows or fixed vented lexan windows (depending on how they want it). A fuel cell, roll cage... I am going to stop myself. I understand what you are saying. I am just saying they two totally different animals. He may have a better chance at passing a regular GT3, but I doubt it. At the end of the day the EVO is still just a Mitsubishi with trick parts thrown at it. Porsche are Porsche.
Amazing car and got to give it to him, pretty audacious to keep up with a cup car. Great job on the tune and hope to see him best the Porsche after he regroups.
MATT, pretty much this confirmes what MOTORTREND(or basically the PRO driver they hired) said about this car in their 2008 America's best handling car comparison. And that would be this: "while the MR feels stable and composed up to nine tenths, when you step over the limit it lets go fast. Higher-finishing cars deliver more warning before they break loose"
Why wasn't it far, the Evo should have smoked the Porsche. The Evo 298 Kilowatts, the Porsche 260 od kilowatts. Porsche naturally aspirated engine 3.6 liter, also its a 10 old car. That's a current Evo turbo charged 4. So it should have smoked the Porsche. I own a Porsche 1976 turbo with a 3.4 Ruf spec engine. A stock GTR has no chance. Its the same spec engine that's in the Ruf yellow bird. What I am saying is people don't realize just how fast Porsche's are. That's what I call super impressive
From what I gather by the cockpit cam and the skid marks is that the Evo was trying to pass on the inside of the BMW right when the BMW guy was preparing for the corner. The BMW started to turn in and the Mr Evo flies by and cuts him off. On a track day (not race day), I would say that the Evo was definitely in the wrong.
and what is so special with german cars??? if driver is dumbass there is no difference whether car is german crap or mad in Japan or even China. so if u are fan boy of german rubbish expensive cars- OK. but as i see here the broblem was the driver !!
John Nicodemus Well, I advise you to try and drive German car for a couple thousand of miles(Hint: pick something more expensive than Audi A3) instead of having sexual intercourse with them.
It takes a lot of self control and practice to drive an EVO fast. Its AWD does help you corner fast until it reaches its limit. EVO's AWD is very advanced in that it sends power to the wheel that needs the power. Audi's new S4 has this feature too. The tricky part is that one has to press down the gas pedal to make it work. As one drives faster and faster, the laws of physics eventually kick in. Glad the driver is okay though.
+Vanisshen I believe they make you drive with the windows open so that it's easier to pull the driver out if (or in this case 'when') they end up upside-down.
Depends on how much emphasis you put in comfort/refinement. The M3 is capable, refined and very comfortable. The Evo is extremely capable, but supposedly not very refined. M3s can get expensive in maintenance and repairs, though I think the Evo isn't cheap to maintain either. Both cars are insanely fun, but very different in character. M3s, by far, would make a better DD, but Evos are VERY fun.
"Hey Matt you gotta drive my car! Come to the track and you can take it for a spin." "Just let me pass this Porsche real quick then you can drive it..."
Nickhead87 I used to have a friend like that, we put up with it because he was the only one with a Sega at the time lol. I hope that is what Matt did, TBH that was rude to call him and his camera guy out there just so Matt could watch that guy drive his own car.
The car is too bulky, top heavy. Could benefit from better tires and suspension adjustments. Fine, likely a better driver. The phony carbon wrap is worthless.
+Zander Nicholas Are you sure it's carbon wrap? The company he advertises sells actual carbon hoods and roofs for this vehicle, so it would be kinda doubly stupid. It did look like foil to me, and i was like "duuude, Y U SPOIL CAR?". As to chip protection, you can just get clear wrap or a body coloured one that at least doesn't pretend to shave weight, because that is just so tacky because dishonest.
Mr. Farrah, This is what`s it`s all about! Great camera work, good sound, an entertaining host without going overboard. This show is a benchmark in my view. Keep it up! Ever going to do that dragracing show we talked about e few weeks back?
I blame the organization who is running the track day. He had 3 substantial offs throughout the weekend/day. After 1 - 2 substantial offs he should be done for the event. To top it off....... he made contact with another car!!! Smh this is not w2w
That is what I was thinking. Ive never seen an event let someone back onto track after a decent off. I noticed from the footage of the first crash, he should have been able to save that at least 2 times and still was unable to gather up the car. Novice driver + a lenient org = 2 cars off
a 30k stock evo vs a 100k porsche? lol. With all the price and performance disadvantage the evo has here, it would have been atleast believable to have the FQ400 over here

He took the spoiler off the Evo though, didn't help the aero
Whats with the jet black "Just For Men" goatee though, the shaved head didn't mask the salt & pepper that didn't match..
The Smoking Tire is what the American top gear should have been. You guys do a great job.
what happens when you take the spoiler off an evo and drive a high speed track
Damn freal
the lack of the spoiler caused this...hmmm lets think that over a second, tell me how the stock spoiler would have kept him from going off track....he just took turns and passes too fast like we all do in video games so stfu bout that spoiler non sense unless it was a joke.
Slyfoxboy think that over for a few more seconds and realize that automakers add spoilers to increase downforce and reduce lift. the shape of a rear windscreen naturally creates lift at high speed like an aeroplane's wing, which is why most fast cars have some sort of wing or lip on the bootlid. if you remove that then the faster you go the less grip your rear wheels have, because the whole back end is getting lifted by air pressure differentials.
that spoiler doesn't make much down force. let's be real, it's shit driving that caused the offs
the cancellation of lift is its main function
You heard the man "if you are not prepared to race, shouldn't be racing"..lol.
"If you're not prepared to race, you shouldn't be racing" someone is butt hurt they didn't get to drive!
But seriously, open track days are not for racing and competition with other drivers! Stay within your limits otherwise things like this happen.
and if you go off the track, keep the gawt damn steering wheel straight!!!
J3ui I liked how he even said it after all though. The guy in the Evo looked like a real joke anyway.
Never bring a car to the track that you aren't prepared to leave at the track.
the point where the accident occurred was a clear passing zone, it was simply an accident. NASA doesn't require instructors past the HPDE 1 level, and this was a 3.
yeah!, definetely pusing the car way too hard if his of track 3 times same day and his lucky the motor didnt let go if his keeping those rpms that high...epecially on a stock bottom..
the porsche was on slicks too, and the Evo on treaded tires.
why would you get an Evo if you can't even drive Nissan Leaf ??
damn, Matt has put on a few pounds since 2010.
No he lost hella weight
don't chase a 911 or it'll be 911 for you
which one? The worst drag launches compilation? We will do it if we run out of other ideas and need a backup.
His wife is gonna be pissed.. lol
"With my BlackBerry" what a time to be alive
Looks like Road Racing Engineering really found a winner to advertise their product
the difference in terms between a spoiler and a wing, is a wing is a surface mounted to the car, in an effort to generate downforce at speed.
A Spoiler is a surface mounted to the car, to shape the air better as it leaves either the underneath of the frontend, or the back of the decklid, to avoid turbulence, and achieve better gas mileage, and possibly better top speed.
this guy was a disaster waiting to happen, i saw that right from the beginning.
he didn't really go off 3 times, I counted the first one as 2 offs, as he hit the dirt on both sides of the track..... and yes, this video certainly proves how much safer driving is at the track than on the street. If he went off the road at 90 on the street, it would have been major problems.
No substitute for skills on the track.
It's funny how people on this thread that actually race are sympathetic and understanding. While people that have no experience and just talk a big game are talking shit about the car being shit or the driver.
This kind of thing happens to everybody. He is actually out there racing on the limit sharpening his skills and that is awesome.
Matt should try Nessa if anyone gets the reference.
Thatll be good
No rear wing = no control in the corners. Aerodynamics 101. If you dont control the air around your car, the air will control your car.
Nice car and all... But you ran off the track 3 times in one day... Clearly you aren't a racing driver. Don't drive like it.
Hopefully he got his Evo back out there racing.
more like what happens when bad driver tries to take on better drivers.
the rear wheel was cracked and wouldnt hold air, otherwise I would have been able to drive it, even after the crash.
couldnt keep up with the gt3 because the EVO IS MISSING THE SPOILER
+Ko-wing wong He tried to pass a purpose built race car with a weekend track car/daily driver.
That is what happened.
+1400IntruderVS no it's because the bloody knob took the spoiler oft
+TheTyisAwesome *off
TheTyisAwesome There is a bit more than that going on here.
Lol i was just kidding i think the other guy is too because it just looks silly with out the spoiler
Would a new front splitter at front and a spoiler on rear solve the problem of going off all time? I know the car is on the limit when he has these offs but surely some rear downforce wouldn't hinder but improve high speed cornering. It works for the Porsche Cup Car.
Oh damn, his wife ain't gonna be happy.
It's a wrap, so he cares about touching it as much as I do....
The fuck was this? The dude went off the track 3 times...if you wanted to catch the Porsche you should have let a legitimate pro drive
Everyone rips on the man, at least he sent it.
I was under the impression the other car running along side swiped him in the BMW.
Certainly looked that way, given the way the car shunted sideways before he went off.
Teens with fart-can equipped dodge neons argue about trunk wings...
Crashing is part of racing and its the only way you learn.. invest in a set of semi's, turn down the boost a little (like that's going to happen) and just more seat time in general. sorted
wait, you mean to tell me a race tuned Mitsubishi is not as good as factory stock Porsche on a track??? What!?! Noo..... you don't say....
+lifehackertips He tried to pass a purpose built race car with a weekend track car/daily driver.
That is what happened.
+1400IntruderVS that's a factory stock 996 cup car, and he was racing in a "tuned by Road Race Engineering" Evo X.
"you ever drive anything like this" apparently he hasn't either
MATT, pretty much this confirmes what MOTORTREND(or basically the PRO driver they hired) said about this car in their 2008 America's best handling car comparison.
And that would be this:
"while the MR feels stable and composed up to nine tenths, when you step over the limit it lets go fast. Higher-finishing cars deliver more warning before they break loose"
The Evo is definitely a great bargain performance car. But vs. a 911 Cup car on a track? thats not even fair.
996 just saying not trying to be a correction nazi
Jake Warner 996 is the chassis code. 911 is the model.
oh well thank you for just informing me and not being an ass like most lol
lmao FUCK YOU YOU MOOSE TWIT! lol jk
That's what happens when you try to f with German cars. Just acknowledge that they are superior.
and what is so special with german cars??? if driver is dumbass there is no difference whether car is german crap or mad in Japan or even China. so if u are fan boy of german rubbish expensive cars- OK. but as i see here the broblem was the driver !!
Yeah, that's what losers always do. They make up fake reasons.
John Nicodemus
Well, I advise you to try and drive German car for a couple thousand of miles(Hint: pick something more expensive than Audi A3) instead of having sexual intercourse with them.
kcus kcidu
No, you.
You sound like an idiot. And I'm saying this as the owner of a German car.
Yea, "race" with windows fully open while bullshitting about weight reduction, what a smart combination.
they both weigh 300 pounds what weight reduction
+Vanisshen Pretty sure its a rule you have to have your window open.
+Vanisshen I believe they make you drive with the windows open so that it's easier to pull the driver out if (or in this case 'when') they end up upside-down.
Zero Ninety Thanks, I get it now.
M3s, by far, would make a better DD, but Evos are VERY fun.
one does not simply beat the 911..
"Hey Matt you gotta drive my car! Come to the track and you can take it for a spin." "Just let me pass this Porsche real quick then you can drive it..."
Nickhead87
I used to have a friend like that, we put up with it because he was the only one with a Sega at the time lol.
Zander Nicholas carbon wrap is protection from rock chips.
Zander Nicholas Yea, the 10 has been a disappointment from day one.
I know it's far from the same but in many ways I'm not a fan of my gf's Lancer GTS. Only fair thing so far is no "major" issues with the car.
Siana Gearz I'm sure
the wife is not going to be happy!
I can think of about 50,000 people who would disagree with you.
evo needs some aero bits for down force
For starters, it needs a tuned spoiler, and splitter to make it a bit stickier for the evo dragster does not turn well. Good luck. Good vid.
How embarrassing
Novice driver + a lenient org = 2 cars off
*software and a pulley can take that engine over 400hp.
a 30k stock evo vs a 100k porsche? lol. With all the price and performance disadvantage the evo has here, it would have been atleast believable to have the FQ400 over here
