  • Author David Mamet has declared that Hollywood is “dead”.
“Every time the technology changes, there’s a whole new paradigm,” he told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.
“So now the new paradigm is to go to downloading and streaming.
“The incredible bureaucracy - the pointless bureaucracy of the studio system which has been around for a hundred years is now dead.
“Nobody goes to the movies anymore.”

Hollywood seems to think it's primary industry purpose is to preach and lecture with entertainment the vehicle. The public says you can't even get the entertainment part right anymore - the preaching and lecturing is better left with those you can take more seriously. An entertaining lecture is good for those who put the lecture first and the entertainment part second. Hollywood has been turning itself into an industry there's no demand for - like buying a vehicle that's programmed to give woke lectures every minute it's being driven.

He's right, no one goes to the cinema anymore. I used to go to the movies all the time with friends, we'd often go at least once every fortnight, sometimes weekly if there were some good films out. Well, as of December 20th, I haven't seen a movie at the cinemas all year. We don't go to the cinemas anymore, as they say, "go woke, go broke". When they put out a great movie, I might go and see it. Until then, we now meet at each others homes and do movie nights, with DVDs!! F U Hollywood!

@@draighodge6039 ah okay. It wasn't clear to me. If a film is lecturing or pontificating it's probably not well written or made. Most films have opinions going back to the early days of filmmaking. So it's really the amplification of a few stars and their opinions that bother you. I get that. For me it doesn't affect if I'll watch a movie or not, but I get it for others. I feel like there's more of a complaint about this with movies and shows as opposed to sports (who also can have loud opinions) and rich people, who's opinions are legion with their ability to wage a very loud, outsized megaphone. And rich politicians. I mean really, a Hollywood star can't send us to war or invade anyone's country. Anyway, thanks for answering. I was just curious.

    • @draighodge6039
      @draighodge6039 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Phil_Langone_FilmArt You are welcome. To your point about poorly written scripts, I can see that. Star Wars was about a cosmic struggle, now, it is preoccupied with convincing us that any woman can be a good man. Star Trek's more recent spinoffs have similar problems. I wish we could go back to humorous interactions with aliens such as that time Captain Janeway put her hands on her hips and caused a diplomatic incident or when Captain Archer's beagle did the same thing. That was funny and also a bit of a thought experiment.
Watching extended sex scenes is off-putting. Porn is on demand for the viewer who wants it. I suspect most viewers are okay without knowing the ins and outs of various sexual practices, whether performed by an Ever Strait, someone LG or B, or the rest of the alphabet. The last time sex moved a serious movie along it was, "Pretty Woman", a rags-to-riches movie about a prostitute so it made sense. I wish for better writers. Does being in a Union dumb them down or restrict their idea options?

Spot on. A lot to unpack here. Any industry that can cut the balls off of Indiana Jones has a serious problem.
I LOVE going to movie theaters. I would go all the time if there was anything worth watching. These days it's all dark, dreary, uninspired apocalyptic crap. Ever heard of lighting? Ever heard of actual relatable humor as opposed to the insufferable, oppressive, snarky woke sniping that has taken over?
There is ZERO creativity in evidence. Everything is a remake or a sequel. Superhero schmooperhero.
I don't go to movies to be preached to or endure pandering to some small demographic.
AI is an eternal bore, as is anything that is overproduced. The music industry is bereft of quality for the same reason. My favorite band is any garage band churning out some gritty take that sounds like humans made it.
The movie executives got together to design a horse and what we got was a camel. Until they they realize that they themselves are CLUELESS, and do the only thing they're good for - shelling out money and start employing people on the basis of merit and not their demographic identity, and turn over the creative process to people with a scintilla of imagination and talent, the industry will stay in the grave and I'll be staying home watching Lucy reruns.

Its not just that. As a Hollywood film maker, you are competing with your neighbors 16 year old kid, who has access to the same editing and effects technology that you do. The barriers to entry are falling. The aura of celebrities has gone, because social media has shown people that they are, in fact, not very talented and for the most part dumb (and annoying), and movies no longer have the appeal that they used to in an age of VR, games and social media. (And lets not bring A.I. into it). The Buggles should re-do their famous song, but this time the lyrics should be: ''Internet killed the Hollywood star''.

Show me a 16 yeras old kid who is able to make a full-lenght blockbuster with professional level of VFX. :D Nobody like that exists. Whole teams of overworked VFX artists work on one M-s*it-U movie, and don´t get me started on the cameramen, stuntmen, sound tech people...
It can change in th future with advanced AI generators which will most likely be able to generate a full movie based on a text fed to them one day, but the technology is not even close to that yet.
It´s impossible to singlehandedly make 300 mil. budget movie. Even if the neccessary budget is like 100 mil.

Yeah, i meant that more in the sense of competition for eye-balls, for your time. A lot of people prefer to allocate their free time nowadays to watching TH-cam videos instead of a movie. On the other hand.....i do think that it is possible for a kid to create a super low budget flick or even an indie with good production values/quality, with the current available technology, even more so than when Sam Raimi made Evil Dead with largely improvised equipement back in 1981. @@Mouse_Metal

They trash the floors, talk incessantly and have no idea how rude they are. Why would anyone subject themselves to this sort of behaviour? Add to that that most of the movies being produced of late are crap stories full of just the 'right' mix of minorities regardless of whether it works for the story. Just make good movies and the audience will come. Try to socially engineer a movie and the audience will disappear like smoke through a keyhole. This is why Hollywood is dead. Long may it stay that way.

I went to a theater 2 years ago in a mall to see Dune, but don't go to movie, bars, and events anymore. I can't afford them nor interested in the movies, events, bars, etc. of the 2020's. There were free tickets to The Sound of Freedom back in August, but I felt a risk of going. Many who did take up the offer going to see it, report there was no air conditioning nor customer service. Theaters are dead for our 4k screens are better than a projected movie. Dune wasn't very good, but theaters were a convenient break from homelessness for a few hours.

Sound of Freedom was a major success, what happened was that when it was

      made around $250 million.

Nothing exciting to watch here. Then, they must give out Hollywood stars of fame & awards, so they give them out to no talent actors.

There are a few movies that are better on the big screen. David Leans movies ie: Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter etc. His movies have big panoramic scenes that lose their grandeur on a DVD screen. Also, Spartacus and Ben Hur. If Hollywood made more movies like those it would revive their industry. You’re right about the general public rejecting woke crap being shoved down their throats. It’s really crazy that they keep trying to foist that philosophy on us to their detriment.

After hearing it made Josphine the star, I couldn't bring myself to go watch it.
Hopefully, someday, someone will have the balls to make a tv drama series documenting his life and all his battles. The potential for an epic drama would be limitless. As somebody who browses the web literally 24/7, there is PLENTY of talent to keep Hollywood alive. So many damn good writers, both male and female, visionaries and directors in the making that are brilliant, and just waiting twiddling their thumbs for Hollywood to use their ideas. I've got their signed novels in my room as we speak. Even artists; plenty of brilliant artists that paint cubism, surrealism, expressionism, visionaries that can keep the ball rolling just out there waiting to be given the chance. But they don't. Hollywood doesn't care about them. Instead they hire terrible writers that live in their own delusional bubble. It's like trying to operate a body with no blood in it. Writers make up the blood of all of Hollywood, and young up and comers make up the one's who keep it thriving. Without them, it's truly a matter of time before it completely dies, and there's nothing left anymore.

What killed movies in the 2 countries that had them, was getting rid of Drive Ins. The Great Awakening of youth, was going to the drive in with your squeeze, and learning about things....oh, and maybe watch a movie or 2 in the old days. Young people gained independence, by going to the movies when they could drive. It was a social event. A very sad loss to the current youth of both the USA and Australia.
