- In which the gentleman in question reviews the God-Machine Chronicle for the new World of Darkness line.
The God-Machine Chronicle was developed by Matthew McFarland and published by Onyx Path Publishing. It is available to buy via this link: www.drivethrur...
Did any one else think "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" the RPG?
I did ;)
The introduction story you told reminded me of consensus-based reality and the Technocracy from cWoD. It's nice that it can be something so... so much worse...
Ha! Very much so! Less chrome in this one.
Oh, by the way, you are a genius.
Kind as always!
The God-Machine and its angels always make me think of Planescape's Modrons (demons = rogue modrons). Totally what I imagine them being like in a modern setting.
Nice review as always and thank you very much for it.
And the dates in the book, they are not false, they are just the dates the book wants ^^
In a book like this that's a perfectly appropriate caveat.
You just sold a copy of The God-Machine Chronicle. White Wolf and DTRPG should pay you a commission. Again, thank you for your videos and channel.
Tell them that and maybe they will!
Thanks for the review. I have been wondering about some of the new world of darkness stuff.
The Red Lady has a restraining order on me.
Oh dear.
The Gentleman Gamer
I'm the only guy she never found a match for.
Intriguing, this has given me a little spark of an idea that might work well within God Machine’s world. I’ll defiantly add this to my ever growing RPG book wish list.
I was thinking the same thing for you. ;)
If people wanted some longer discussion of the book Mike and I reviewed the book a few episodes back. Darker Days Radio Episode #47
Sounds like a mix of governmental conspiracies and SCP.
More like that you are just a minor cog in a massive, incomprehensibly complex machine. You can't really do anything that is outside your function.... at least not until the realization of what is behind the outer facade.
Also I love that whole brainwashing bit about getting everyone else to show that the correct thing is what you think is wrong.... to the point you begin to think 'Am I in the wrong?' Slowly undermining your sense of assurity with the world, and that it works the way you think it does and should.
0:00 to 5:14 , so far it remembers me, that nice indie game Stanley Parable. It plays with your mind, with a ironic and funny way, it's like the game is u.
another great review looking forward to the next one already :)
There will be another in a month or so.
Im actually at an impasse right now. I started with nWoD and awakening and requiem mostly but im debating on getting behind the god machine or going back and trying the classic with the wod and playing the masquerade with the new anniversery editions coming out.
Awesome review. Ive been looking forward to this book for awhile. I can not wait to get my hands on one. As always great work The Gentleman Gamer!
Thank you!
I think the God-Machine is the computer that was designed to find the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, and operates like the Final Destination movies
I have a very conflicted relationship with chronicles of darkness on one hand I love certain parts of it, like the god machine and the Lost on the other I despise it and it's "totalist" attitude, its complete divorcement from world of darkness, this type of attitude where you either abandon all you knew and loved and embrace some... Questionable original and well written new lore (Coff Coff Requiem Coff Coff) or you can't enjoy the good parts of it, it's all or nothing, I would have preferred if they had continued to build on the old established foundations and added facultative accessory parts (for example, why would a more overarching structure and world conflict between vampires not allow for personal existential horror? Why should the old clans and lore not go well along with it?)
my group has been doing vampire I wonder if it'd be fun to incorporate the god machine into a chronical.
This one does sound great. For the most part, I prefer OWoD but this and Hunter: the Vigil have such great potential for regular, human characters exploring the shadows of the world of darkness.
I very much enjoy the concept of a particularly gruesome and dark Fringe. Not that Fringe wasn't gruesome and dark at times...
I do love Fringe. Ever so much.
I noticed that you mentioned the letters being off, maybe that is a part of the god machine. One idea could be making lotto winners, and ruining their lives
The concept of the god-machine, in the World of darkness setting, reminds me of Clockwork AI from Iteration X in the old Technocracy.
There are some, but not lots, of similarities.
perhaps the god machine is the true form of the weaver in werewolf
maybe the capadosian andideluvian controls it since he couldnt find god lol
I really liked the Aspirations and I included them in the Wars sci-fi NWOD game that I'm running right now. I added those additional virtues & vices into the game too along with the original ones.
As always I enjoyed your story time intro. I think the breaking points is an interesting change. I didn't like the Beats thing at all, it was a bit of a turnoff for me. Maybe that is something that I need to try out though before I pass judgment. I didn't like how they got rid of some of the limiting factors in character creation, like the cost of a 5th dot not being more expensive like it used to be.
As to the setting information, it does sound rather cthulhuish meets technology and that could be very interesting indeed in a sort of Gnostic way. Great review.
That Gnostic element is carried over into Demon: The Descent in a heavy way.
I like how you structured this review. I was involved (briefly) in a game using the rules update, and the group is still discussing them - more or less favorably. Did the changes to the personality mechanics remind you of anything? (more in mood/intent than in form, of course)
Wow...White Wolf hardcover book!Haven't seen that since Masquerade's 20th Anniversary here in Crete!(Greece)
Any idea how i can purchase one,not via DriveThruRpg?Thanks!
Great Review by the way!You sure are a gentleman. :)
Hello Gentleman Gamer. I was just curious, have you by chance done a review of Demon the Descent or the first edition (not classic, but first edition before Chronicles of Darkness) WOD game Innocents? I know you only do games you like or think are very good, but if not that's fine. Wanted to ask just in case I had missed them and perhaps you had done them. but if not, it's cool.
But as always, an awesome review. Enjoyed this one very much.
I've already fused this with my Vampire game. It's going really well.
Excellent! I'm glad.
Basically - The Nosferatu, Nosferati?, Nosferatu's?, However you say it, have made a machine that systematically changes a human's alliance to the Nosferatu, slowly gaining dominion based on how their machine works - The bodies of other vampires. All of my player's are from house Giovanni, so they're all working "together," so to speak. So far they don't know there's a machine that's helping the Nosferatu gain territory, they mostly think it's something in the water.
Not Kidding.
Two out of the 6 player's in my group have stopped drinking water in game because of this.
I don't know how long it'll take them to figure this out.
I could watch whole episodes of these stories. Great video, sir!
Having seen this review from you now does this mean we should expect a nWoD Demon review as well id rather enjoy your take on that game as i truly enjoy your reviews keep up the wonderful work
It occurs to me that the film The World's End could be seen as a comedic rendition of The God Machine Chronicle.
Do you think you can review demon the decent ?
Holy crap, you really give off a Ventrue vibe in this video :D All hail the Prince /bow
one of your best intro's to date!
Cheers!
Agreed, a cool intro :)
You're a gent.
No no you are :p
I use the God-Machine akin to the Weave from the Old World of Darkness
Maybe the errors are on propose, Maybe your the one who is wrong, maybe you should read it again.
Do you have to have the WoD Core book to play this like you did with Vampire / WW ect?
This is the sort of thing id love to run for WoD. Actual creepy sinister horror. I've always been more fond of running games for mortals than any of the supplement books. Shame the people I know only want to play the monsters.
I've had a lot of fun with GMC since its release.
Great video as always.
Is that hardback a print on-demand? It looks really good. I´m worried about the quality compared to the original books. Is it on par?
It is hardback print-on-demand, yes. They're excellent quality.
Canberrans pronounce it "Kan-bruh", a little bit like Edinburgh. Nice to be mentioned though. :)
See, I heard it pronounced the way I said it, and it stuck. I will know for future!
A shame this is no longer available on DTRPG.
It's all in the Chronicle of Darkness rulebook: www.drivethrurpg.com/product/168428/Chronicles-of-Darkness?affiliate_id=182989
@@TheGentlemanGamer Good to know, thanks. :)
The God Machine sounds like something built by a Genius.
Which reminds me, do you ever intend on doing a Genius: The Transgression review?
It's unlikely, as I've yet to run it.
Thanks, both for the great review and for reminding me of my fear of mall-surveys and their ilk. /shivers
They only lead to hell.
Considering how time and space can get rather....Strange once the God Machine gets involved, one could pardon the incorrect times in the fiction. :P
The GMC screws it all up.
Good review. I also did a review on this book, though I focused completely on the last half, the new rules. I liked your description of the first half. What? More World of Darkness? - The God-Machine Chronicle
So I see! Brilliant!
The Gentleman Gamer Thanks!
Great review and thank you for sharing, physical editions FTW !
Indeed! I much prefer book form.
I might buy this just to read the fluff, sounds tasty.
I could see that Beats mechanic working in a variety of other systems.
Thanks for the great review!
Thank you for watching it!
Are you going to review Demon: The Descent?
Have you considered reviewing Blood and Smoke? The God-Machine update for Vampire: the Requiem.
I will be doing so in a couple of weeks, I hope.
The Gentleman Gamer
Sweet!
This sounds fantastic. Will be purchasing next pay day :D
Did you pick it up?
Wow, I haven't ever wanted to play an NWOD game as much as now.
Really? Excellent! Tell the good folks at Onyx Path!
Very good review, thanks. ^.^
Can the God-Machine be abstract?
I bought this game a few months ago, and cannot wait to run a chronicle
Let me know how it goes!
Where can you find the core book?
Type in "Chronicles of Darkness" on DriveThruRPG.
why isn't the god machine chronicle available anymore?
It is, it's just called Chronicles of Darkness. It's the same book.
@@TheGentlemanGamer oh ok so the same is it with the strix chronicle and vampire the requiem 2nd edition?
@@Sakurajima616 exactly, yes.
@@TheGentlemanGamer thanks bro, that helped.
Thank you
Thank YOU!
Love it!
Brilliant!
Thank you!
I will never run a WoD game. But if I did I would run a God-Machine game, drawing in what elements from the rest of the WoD I find appealing. No silly vampires! At the end of the campaign the big 'reveal' is that the God-Machine is 100% out to help, save and foster humanity. Completely and utterly benign. Nothing to 'conquer' or 'slay' or 'overcome'. The Man Behind The Curtain really is a kindly old Wizard and the characters get to click their heels and go Home. Have to make sure one of the characters was a cyborg, one a werecat, one a Revenant and one a woman with a pet... perfect for a convention game.
That don't sound like no RPG I'd want to be playin'
The Gentleman Gamer You slave to the conventional. :P
I conform. It's easier that way...
Let their be vampires.
