How to use an airbrush to paint camouflage on an F-4C Phantom by Revell

  • In the previous video, the camo under the intakes was painted ahead of time so the intakes could be assembled. It's to hard to paint underneath once the intakes are in place. I used Tamiya and Testors acrylic paints to apply the camo with a badger airbrush. The colors were a Tan (brown) which matches almost identical to the pictures I've seen by searching F-4C candycane on the internet, and Medium and Dark Green. After the camo colors dried and cured for several days, I painted the wheel wells and gear, wing tips, and rear fuselage a Gloss White so the candycane decals could be applied. The front nose was painted black and the rear of the engine exhaust and stabilizers were painted metalizer and buffed afterward.

I love doing it like this with overspray it looks real , not masking with tape.

It is a good idea to mask very thoroughly like this, even with great care over spray can show up where you would not expect. I am not sure why anyone would criticize you for that.

I used to think the airbrush eliminated the need to mask but quickly realized that different settings gave different results. I can go slow with low pressure and might avoid it. Ill take forever to paint and that gets old fast. There is a rule of thumb in the pro drywall texture industry: if you dont want over spray on something, mask it off. If you are spraying foward and dont wont overspray on things behind you, mask it off. People say my modeling sucks and I worry to much about overspray. How ironic!

Cool video. I have an F4E and F4F that I would like to build next. I am trying to decide how I want to paint the camo. My original plan was to mask it but I had this idea of applying it free hand by just rattle canning it. What do you recommend? What would look more natural? Also I noticed in one of your replies you mentioned adding thinner, to minimize splattering, when airbrushing. Do you typically use a reducer when airbrushing? If so what do you recommend for acrylics and how much should I reduce it?

You will get better control with an airbrush over a rattlecan. You would have to mark lines using a rattle can. I have other videos where I use putty to mask the camo lines off. I use tamiya acrylics and their x-20a thinner. Mix to consistency of milk of course. That's all I use. I have a badger patriot 105bairbrush. Works great for me.

can i ask what you use for airbrushing the fine lines? im having trouble with the paint splattering all over. What compressor pressure, needle size, paint do you use?
    Awesome model!

A Badger Patriot. I use the stock needle that it comes with. The paint will vary from Tamyia acrylics to Testors Model Master arylics or enamels. I also use a badge compressor. You may have a thinning issue of your getting splatter issues and possible pressure. Try experimenting with thinning the paint and different air pressures.

The tyres look more realistic if you paint with tyre-colour paint, not gloss black, look at the tyres on your car, otherwise it's a great
    video, regards John.

I was just following instructions on it. I'm never concerned with realism to much.

Did you intend to cover the canopy with paint on purpose?

Are you referring to the outside? It is covered in tape. The inside was hand painted.
