PROS
1. The Gentle Giant
Perhaps the best-known quality of Maine Coon cats is their large size. Weighing up to 25 pounds, these popular cats are one of the larger, more muscular breeds of domestic felines. They are affectionately known as, "gentle giants," as their large size is often complemented by a sweet and calm personality. While these felines grow large in size, they often do not require much more living space than other cats - making them a suitable option for small apartments or larger homes.
2. Kid & Pet Friendly
Maine Coon cats often thrive in homes with small children and/or other pets. When properly introduced to the other members of the family, a Maine Coon should feel comfortable living harmoniously with kids, cats or dogs. Maine Coon cats are great family pets that offer gentle affection without necessarily getting too attached to their human companions, and they are typically not known to be aggressive. A Maine Coon cat probably won't mind being gently cuddled by a child or sharing his cat tower with another feline friend. It is important to keep in mind, however, this breed may not do well with rodent pets, like hamsters or mice.

1. Grooming Requirements
The downside of the Maine Coon cat's beautiful fur is the demanding grooming requirements. They tend to shed heavily, which can be reduced by frequent brushing and even trips to the groomers. Because these cats have a vast amount of fur, parasite prevention is especially critical. Maine Coon cat owners should frequently check for pests like fleas and ticks, and talk with their veterinarians about preventative care from common parasites.
2. Health Risks
All breeds of cats may be associated with certain health risks, and because of the Maine Coon's large size, they may develop hip, back or leg issues throughout their lives. More common conditions that affect these cats include hip dysplasia and spinal muscle atrophy. Just like any other breed or pet, the Maine Coon cat should be on a regular schedule with a veterinarian to promote lifelong health and detect any possible issues.

These gentle giants, and I’ve owned two, love to be brushed! In your “wind down” time from work? Take 15 to 20 minutes a day to brush them with a soft plastic brush. This eliminates hair problems for them and you! Plus it’s a simple but fruitful bonding experience for you both. Don’t not adopt one scared of their hair! Get pet insurance (for any pet) and enjoy him/her for years to come! If you keep them indoors they live longer! Hope this helps!

I have a normal tabby male, just under a year old and want to get a maincoon I don’t know if I should get a certain gender or not or if it’s a bad idea for any reason. I was thinking when I have to work they can keep each other busy my cat is usually very chill and loving.
If this can help 5 months later, I suggest you get him another male but make sure yours is neutered as females are not as playful and are more reserved so he will feel lonely again.

I trim the fur on their behind on a regular basis, it does make a difference
Having lived acrossthe country (lower 48) & worked as a Travel Nurse, I was amazed how many pet cats had the Maine Coon genes in them, & were not 100% MC. All were beautiful!!!😻
They don't do well with rodents understandable so....because they will kill them and sometimes eat them....they're excellent mousers, I had a Snowshoe Cat who was a good mouser and also ate his kill sometimes...they also like being outside too.
