  • Continuing their journey to become Adirondack 46ers, the guys get together and hike Mount Colvin & Blake Peak in mid-October. The weather was perfect - even if it was a bit windy - and the views were amazing!!

      Did anyone listen to James Applegate’s interview with Erik Schlimmer on the 46 of 46? They talk about trail building in New England. It was fascinating.

    Thanks for the vid! I did Colvin & Blake earlier this year, and agree with all of your assessments (i.e., Colvin good, Blake not so much). According to one of the ADK Facebook pages I believe someone took the little "Blake" stone off the summit. He felt it violated the Leave No Trace philosophy. Personally I think that's a bit of a jerk move because, as you suggest, the Blake summit isn't exactly easily identifiable. Hope to see you guys on the trail someday!

      I agree with LNT principles, however if we were being strict about them, them all trail signs and markers should be removed as well. I get disappointed when people follow the guidelines like they are laws written in stone, instead of realizing the intent behind them. It's kind of a bummer, but I also don't like seeing trash and poop when I'm on an adventure either, so it's very tough balancing act.
      Thanks for watching!

    Why has John hiked all the worse mountains first?

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL Unfortunately for him, he didnt get started until recently, and since Mark and I left a lot of the less desirable ADK High Peaks for last, John gets a little screwed ;)

    "Swampy, over boulders and vertical" I agree with Dan completely and why I prefer not to try climbing the peaks. Love watching you guys though!

    Thanks for your channel. I avoid the high peaks region due to “congestion” of hikers.

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The High Peaks are beautiful, and there are some truly remote and quiet places throughout the area still, but Rt73 is not where you'll find that these days.
      Thanks for watching!

      @naturescritter4691 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks to the current events, it’s getting harder to even go to my remote hikes without an influx of “new hikers” which is great. Eventually I am going after one of your hikes. But I want to do a complete thru of the NPT but southbound.

    I don’t recall a ladder on the top of Colvin...I recall barely being able to pull myself up lol. But it was 5 years ago. I think I will finish my winter round on Blake. I wonder if anyone has done that. I mean it’s pretty much worse than Cooch...lol

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The little ladder near the top of Colvin seemed pretty new, and I didn't have an issue with that one, but the much older, partially rotten, icy, big ones on the other side of the mountain sketched me out pretty good ...
      Finishing on Blake - yuck ... in the winter - double yuck ;)

    Nice job, Colvin’s view is amazing. Blake and Colvin are near and dear to me. We hit those before Dial and Nippletop to finish my 46er. Keep plugging away, you are almost there. Any winter 46ers planned?

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colvin was awesome - definitely will be doing that again! Not really sure about the High Peaks in the winter ... I'll likely do some of them, but I really enjoy snowshoeing out to a leanto and hanging out overlooking a frozen pond/lake in the winter time. Who knows, though ... I could always get the fever. I know Dan is interested ;)

    That's nuts you drive to the trail head so early and yet there is no place to park. Dan is an animal! I can't imagine how many times he will earn his 46r in his life time. It is great to have friends like this. No matter how many times he has done it, he is willing to do it again. I hope you guys show John the same love!

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, parking has gotten a bit nutty through the Rt73 corridor over the last few years. Next year we are looking at going up mid-week for the ones we have left just to avoid the frenzy.
      And yea, Dan is an animal AND a good friend ... we wonder why he hangs out with us ;) But we're definitely going to be helping John get his if/when he wants it. In fact, when we go back out to get Seward and Seymour, we're going to hit Donaldson and Emmons again just for him!

    Glad to see your son made it out with you all. That little ladder going up Colvin was not there when I did it. Although a small summit, Colvin was one of my favorite because of the views. I'd rather do Allen again than Blake. I'd love to hit Fish Hawk Cliffs and Indian Head with you if you're open to it.
