It seems like we need to be more like you and your husband.
In Chinese culture, family members don't say thank you to one another. Instead thanks is shown -- like making someone his favourite meal, or giving the person a gift, or just helping the person with tasks, etc. Among Chinese family members, thanks is shown and not said.
Non-Chinese do believe that Chinese people are uncivilized. I think that we're pretty civilized, but I'm Chinese and so could be biased.

I don’t believe any culture is uncivilized. Someone’s culture is their culture. The Chinese culture is rich in its history and in their own way of Being now, as we see in these wonderful videos.
I only mentioned the “thanks” because it was mentioned in the video. I did not mean to offend anyone. If I did, I apologize.
I don’t know about all Americans, but my husband and I thank each other in our deeds and in words. With so much taking for granted (including each other, especially in America, I feel), saying thanks shows appreciation and acknowledgment. It’s become such a habit in our relationship that it is almost part of our nature. And it extends to the outside world.🙂

Wow! We go to store and buy packages of rice without thinking about the process. If it’s real rice we’re buying and not manufactured with plastics. Truth is if we ain’t growing it ourselves we don’t know what heck we eating.
We think rice comes from the shop not knowing the whole process and the hardworking people who plant it
