Tigers passed on Wyatt Langford for Clark. Very risky decision. Time will tell if Clark can hit a 98 mph fastball or a 92 mph slider. I wish him the best.

All baseball draft picks are uncertain. No one knows if hitter picks are going to be able to hit big league pitching. You just make picks that seem best.
Beyond that, it seems pretty obvious to me that the rule changes in MLB contributed to this pick. Clark can fly. Stolen bases are coming back pretty strongly. Plus, this pick also makes it pretty clear that the Tigers want to get Greene the hell out of CF before he kills himself. It might be too late by the time Clark arrives, but who knows. He has great tools and already has a man's physique at 18 years old. It might not be all that long. I don't mind that he has a little "flavor," but that can also make it hard to handle failures, which happen to everyone in this game. Clark wasn't a reach. He was going top 5, regardless. Some people thought he was worthy of being #1. Skenes has sort of a funky delivery... kind of throws across his body. Looks like a motion ready to cause a shoulder problem. Anyway... the other hitters Detroit might have taken don't have the speed/defense of Clark, and even though they brought the fences in, Comerica is still a pretty big park.

This kid Max Clark is damn good. Has the right frame. I see the hype.
But he is no Dylan Crews. He would have to prove that against better competition. D1 competition in the SEC to be honest. It's a damn shame you have cheap ass MLB organizations like the Pirates that might draft this kid 1st for lower slot value over the likes of Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, Wyatt Langford, Enrique Bradfield...... PROVEN players.

I know Joey Wentz personally, who went to the Tigers in the first round as well, coincidentally, and he gave up one hit his entire senior season but was so much more humble than this guy. (Fun fact Joey has light tower power as a hitter, like 450+ feet with a metal bat)

@@perfect1150 ---> POSTED: **Yes he has a ton of talent against high school aged players...**
As you did in another thread, you are exposing ignorance and naivety.
      1. Yes, he is playing high school players. That is because he is high school.
      2. Displaying a ton of talent is displaying a ton of talent. The opponent isn't relevant. If you have a sweet swing, then you have a sweet swing. If you can run like the wind, then you can run like the wind. If you have a great arm, then you have a great arm. If you have outstanding fielding skills, then you do. The level at which you have those things isn't pertinent to having those abilities.
      3. You have offered the implied premise that no high school age players should be drafted before any college age players, since high school age players are playing against high school age players. That is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen/heard anyone even imply regarding sports.
**....we'll see how he does in the real world of baseball**
      1. He has already been in the "real world of baseball." It is called, "playing baseball." That is how the scouts know he is at least "plus" in 4 of the 5 categories that scouts grade.
      2. RIGHT!!!!!!! We will see how EVERY PICK in EVERY DRAFT pans out. Nothing about saying "We will see how he does" applies to Clark any more than it does to anyone else.

@@slyjokerg How long did it take you to figure out how to use the words "ignorance" and "naivety"? Good job using AI.
"The opponent doesn't matter"...that has to be the dumbest comment ever made. Of course the opponent matters.
Just because you have a sweet swing that works at the high school level doesn't mean it will work at any other level. Unlike running speed, or arm strength....they translate to every level. Hitting, hitting with power, and fielding absolutely depend on the opponent and their level.
If you want to piss away millions of dollars on an unproven, overhyped high school player that's your choice.
High school baseball is not the real world of baseball. Hitting 80 pus at the high school level is not the real world. Take the 95+ with movement, then back that up with 85 off speed and able to locate.....field the ball hit 95 MPH back at you....that's the real world. Scouts can't see the future. Great..he's a "plus" in 4 of the 5 categories....we'll see how "plus" he is when the pressure is on. I am curious which one of the categories he's not a "plus" in.
Oh "we'll see how he does" definitely applies to Clark more than anyone drafted below him. And we wonder why the Tigers haven't been in the playoffs since 2014 coming from a soft division.

Depends though, if you're talking about actual good high schools that have good baseball programs yeah their fields usually emulate pro level dimensions. Like my school's field was 360 dead center, 345 in the gaps, 315 to left and 325 to right. But our division rival was 415 dead center, 340 down each line and 370 in the gaps. Just depends.

**Just because he can hit, hit for power, run, field and throw at the high school level doesn't mean it will translate to the MLB level.**
      1. The 4 categories at which he is rated at least "plus" are hitting for average, running, defense, and arm strength. His "hit for power" is "average" at this point.
      2. RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! Someone being rated highly as a prospect NEVER means it will translate to the ML level. It can be said for every person in the draft. Trying to pin that specifically on Clark is laughable, as it applies to everyone.

No one is good enough to not bust it every time. The issue here is that you are singling him out when EVERY SINGLE PLAYER WHO HAS EVER PLAYED THE GAME (perhaps other than Pete Rose, who is still a fucking asshole as a person, but deserves to be in the HoF) has moments of brain farts, including players in MLB today. And Clark is a child just getting out of HS. It isn't warranted to shit on him for one brain fart (if it even was one... as I mentioned, it might have even been that he couldn't go to second on that play... plus, it wasn't like the ball was dropped at the OF warning track).
**i just know my college coach would have asked me after the game if my legs were sore lol.**
I know what you are saying, and like I noted, it crossed my mind as well, but those are learning moments, not things about which to go ape shit about regarding an 18 year old.
**but yes pros play way more games than highschoolers and college. so busting it every time doesnt make sense. pretty unwise to not see that.**
There is zero excuse to not bust it every time at every level. Being in college or pro baseball, minors or MLB, is no more excuse to not bust it every time, no matter what, than should be expected of every HS player. The only time a exception might be made is if a player is playing hurt, such as having a tender hamstring, but in my opinion, as a general rule, if you are not able to go all out every minute, then you probably shouldn't be in the lineup. Pinch hitting is a bit of separate topic. Busting your ass is the one thing that you can control 100% of the time. Like I alluded to before, Pete Rose and Dennis Rodman might be crazy dickheads, but they should be models for how to play a sport. I used to watch Gary Sheffield dog it down to first base, running out ground balls, and I would get disgusted. He is hardly the only one.
(There used to be an exclusion for pitchers who were batting not busting their ass, but that isn't a thing anymore in pro ball.)

      1. Under your implied premise, all HS kids are lesser prospects than college kids, since they are only going against other HS kids. That is laughably naive, frankly.
      2. Langford is 3yrs older than Clark and their skills are fairly comparable.
      3. Clark has a man's body at 18 years old, and there is every reason to believe he is going to only get stronger. He can already run like the wind.
      4. Clark is a no doubt about it CF, which the Tigers need to fill long term, as Greene is not going to stick there. He can play it, but he is there by default right now. If Detroit had another bona fide, regular CF, Greene would be playing a corner spot. Too much wear and tear for him in CF. He is already getting hurt and he has a "no let up" style of play.
      5. It would be "should HAVE," not "should OF." If you are going to try to come off as especially bright and knowledgeable, you might want to learn basic grammar.

      1. "Overhyping his value..." according to you.
      2. Gee, the 54 billion scouts that do this for a living have never come across any prospect having a "hype team," and there is no way any of them could ever see through a "hype team" falsely portraying a prospects talent. It isn't like the scouts every see for themselves what a prospects abilities are. LOL
**None of his HS stats mean anything at all until he rakes at the AAA level.**
      1. I never offered a single syllable about his HS stats.
      2. HS stats are symbolic of a player's ability, but they are by no means anything close to being the only gauge by which scouts rate players. Not even close.
      3. Why you think AAA is the only level by which a player's progression matters, I have no idea. LOL. Sorry, but you are clearly a novice who doesn't know anything about any of this.
**I wish him the best but his cockiness is ridiculous...like you're raking against HS kids...congrats want a cookie?**
      1. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of HS kids behave in exactly the same way. You are highly ignorant and naive about all of this.
      2. "Cockiness" has no bearing on talent. However, it is actually often seen as a plus by scouts when a player is "cocky." It shows confidence. There has been an endless river of extremely talented kids who have never amounted to anything because they couldn't summon the confidence that is required to succeed in this game.
      3. Raking against high school kids is viewed for what it is. Every scout who graded him inherently took into account that is quite obviously a HS player. That happens for a bazillion prospects in every draft. It is no different for Clark.
