What a lot of people who say, “It was just a dog...” don’t seem to get is that it wasn’t necessarily the dog that set John down on this path. It was the fact that it was his wife’s final gift to him. A way to help him grieve not alone, process and eventually accept her death. And for some punk, on a whim no less, to just up and take that from him, and think he’s absolved from any consequences? Yeah...you take away a person’s means to grieve and process, you often get a monster.
Yes, I agree as well,I believe it arrived in a box just after his wife died..It was the loss of the dog more than the theft of his car that set him on that path..Looking forward to seeing the third movie..
Not just his dog. The dog sent to him from his wife after she passed away and knew he would need another living creature to help him through grieving process.

John Wick was already been emotionally and mentally devastated by his loss to have Daisy murdered would had thrown him totally over the edge of insanity. The mere fact that he tried to rationalize meant that he still thought he could get out. Actually highlighting the notion that he had never been subject to indifferent consequences. One of the best kills in movies ever. No words needed no long emotional stair just cold walk up and headshot walk away.

he could ahve just killed him with that first shot but deliberately chose to trotuer him, but not in a way that woudl leave him needlessly exposed........
he does that later on in the movie, but at that point he was just reckless cause he got hsi revenge and didn't care about the outcome from there, just wanted to clean up loose ends and if he died then, who cares. wasn't until he was saved, and lost his friend, that he was like 'nope, you die.'

What a lot of people who say, “It was just a dog...” don’t seem to get is that it wasn’t necessarily the dog that set John down on this path. It was the fact that it was his wife’s final gift to him. The first part of this film with John mourning the death of his wife, and then his reaction to the arrival of the puppy was expertly done. In just a few minutes with very little dialogue, you understood this man, what he was feeling, and how he internalised the pain he felt. We are all told nowadays that keeping the pain deep inside is a bad thing, but for John, it gave him the focus and the fuel he needed to release the pain and anger in his own, very special way.
