154-day bin harvest & 2 pound red wiggler exchange - worm farm vermicomposting

  • The horizontal migration in my oldest red wiggler bin is complete and the last of the worms are removed from the container. Since the worms are needed for an exchange of worms with another vermicomposter, and since I do not have enough worms to meet the need, I dip into my newest red wiggler bin to fetch the required additional worms needed for the task at hand

    So they say 1 pound of worms is 1000 worms! Hubby and I both agree in your 1st bin there's more than 2000 worms hmmm.

    I've given mine tomatoes multiple times and they love them. Watermelon and banana skins are favorites though.
    I had a coconut that got 'lost' in the back of the fridge a way back and didn't think we should eat it...Out of fun, I just broke a small hole in it and put it into my worms...the LOVE the coconut. I think they've had it about 2 years now, but there's always a huge ball of worms in it. Most of it's gone, but there's still a little in one end still...I may have to get another just to 'treat' them. I like watching how they react to different foods...it's amazing to me.
    As far a a bag for travel, the one I got my worms in from Uncle Jim's was about the same type of fabric that you use for gardens to keep weeds down, the non-woven stuff they make shopping bags from too...maybe you cannot sew one, but even taking a large enough square, putting the worms in it , gathering it up and tying the top closed might be an idea for you rather than using a T-shirt, unless you really want to get rid of some. :) Blessings!

      You make a good point. I have a roll of black fabric similar to that used as weed barrier. I could fashion simple bags from that if I had to. If only I knew how to operate a sewing machine.. :)

      Sounds like the Uncle Jim's red / blue bait n' switch deal that I heard about is true. I wonder if that's why the person who I am swapping with felt that his "red wigglers" were not as lively as mine (that was his main reason for hoping to get some of mine). Now that I know for sure that what I'm getting is likely a mix of, if not primarily, blues then I will most certainly be keeping them segregated from my other worms. Thanks for the feedback!

    Blue worms came with my order of red wiggles from Uncle Jim's. The compost just as well. They seems to out breed the red wiggles. They seems to be escape artist and are very fast. Although you can count rings from the nose to clittellum, the best way to tell if they are blues is to put them with in the light... see which one speed past the others 2 to 1.

    How many days do you feed a bin before you start to migrate them over and pull the worms out, & start a new bin? & how do you feed? I'm just curious because I don't think I've ever seen a video from b you where you feed them jist regularly... jist curious how you get them to work through the material in the bin... Do you feed them in corners going from corner to corner in each feeding, for a certain number of weeks before feeding on only the migration area, or do you feed on left side one week, then right side next? I used to be able to keep up with a lot of your videos but since having my baby I have only caught a few here and there... (hes almost 2 now... I remember bingeing on your & "The Crazy Worm Lady"'s videos right before going into labor & right after having the baby... haha)

    • @A-V
      @A-V  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on the new addition to the family! And welcome back to the channel. I have no set time for running the bin during its normal composting phase - I just go with it for a while then I just decide at some point that it is time to start winding things down. I pretty much always place the food down the middle - although I have on a few occasions also done the corner "pocket feeding" approach too. Before proceeding to the migration of the worms from the finished compost, nowadays I allow a few weeks of "foraging" to happen which allow the worms some time to do away with any remaining scraps of bedding or food that may still be scattered throughout the castings. During this time I also allow the material to dry a bit too. Between the drying of the material & the depletion of the food supply, I stack the deck in my favor so that once I begin the migration process the worms are highly motivated to make their way to the edge of the bin where the fresh supply of bedding and food gets placed. This approach seems to work well for me... so this is how I've been doing it most recently. Thanks for watching!

    • @A-V
      @A-V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@A-V I really appreciate your replies. You've replied to all my comments. I watch all your videos, and occasionally catch up on one's from years ago. Regarding the approach I mentioned, no I've not seen anyone try it, hence my reason for asking. My worm bins are only 3mo old so I haven't had the opportunity to separate worms from castings yet. But I'd like to try that approach myself. I'm maybe a little unconventional, but I have my two worm bins in my bedroom :') haha, and have about 1.5kg red wrigglers between the two. I keep it ultra clean, perfect moisture balance by adjusting plastic bag coverage on the surface, always burying food below the surface, and add coffee grinds to prevent fruit flies, all things I've learned from your channel. Thank you so much for your dedication to your channel. All really interesting stuff. I studied mechanical engineering, graduated 4 years ago, so love tinkering, but no I don't have a great channel like you. I'm too shy to talk on camera :D

    • @A-V
      @A-V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am, and have always been, a tinkerer too. I like the sound of how your worm composting system is set up. Keeping things clean and orderly is easy. The worms tend to stay where they belong - so there's no reason to be concerned about having them in the house. When I first started I remember some videos suggesting that they could even be stored under the sink in your kitchen cabinet. The idea seemed so odd - but now I believe it is entirely do-able that way if some would want to do so. If you ever decide to shoot more videos - even if you keep yourself off screen - then I bet it would get some traction. Especially if you do interesting, cutting-edge things like what I saw earlier today. Anyhow - thanks again for watching! :)
