glen (and julie), you guys put out such great content. I feel bad that you haven't hit the mainstream yet. But, if it makes you feel any better, know at least this guy keeps you in the same appreciation as Bon Appetit, Babish, and Matty Matheson
I'm now stuck with the idea for a show in my head that mostly involves Glen and Julie trying to wrangle Matty Matheson at various destinations like exasperated parents who thought taking their problem child 11 y/o to Paris was a good idea.
I make a similar soup with a smoked ham hock. I boil the ham hock for the broth and pick off any meat that's still on there. I sometimes find that there isn't enough meat and then I use some double smoked bacon if needed. We love navy beans with it and sometimes I use white kidney beans in there too. I always like a little bit of sage and nutmeg in there. A bit of rosemary in there is nice too. I use peeled tomatoes in mine and they are usually the fire roasted ones, I like that over the regular ones. I sometimes even add in some roasted red peppers puree in there. It really depends on what I have/what I can get at the time. Always served with a nice crusty baguette with some cultured butter. So good
In my childhood ( looong time ago) bean soup followed a few days after we had ham for dinner. Bits of ham and the ham bone were in the pot with the beans, carrots, celery etc. Mom served it on a plate poured over slices of bread.
Nice one Glen, this is one of my favourite things. I make bean soups (or stews because that's how they come out sometimes) all the time and they're so easy to make, as you just demonstrated. And they're not expensive to make either if you're on a budget. Also you can freeze in freezer bags or washed-up plastic take-away containers. And you can experiment with different spices such as ground cumin, smoked paprika (be careful) and of course a healthy teaspoonful or more of cayenne to add a bit of heat - or really whatever the hell is in your cupboard. I'm also in agreement with you about tinned beans, nothing wrong with them, even the cheapo supermarket own-brands. Also you can, in the time the soup is cooking, quickly knock up a soda bread to go along with the soup.... Om, bloody, nom :)
I’m right with you on using your canned beans. Once our bacon is ready I would like to try this soup! I love using preserved produce from our garden all through winter! My wife and I sliced up our new pea meal bacon, made from your recipe, today it was so so much better than store bought! I’m cold smoking the streaky bacon tomorrow! Klaus
You’ve been real busy lately. Putting out a video pretty much everyday. I am glad I found your channel and I enjoy how calm you’re, you explain everything well and you give substitutions.
I admire how you take care of growing your own tomatoes 👌I notice that on your studio tour video ☺️ do you have more videos of your wonderful cozy garden? It reminds me of home sweet home ❤️
I made this today but didn't have any bacon (horror!) so used a ham steak diced into little pieces. I've dubbed this Pork & Bean soup since I think it will work with any pork product. Used beef stock instead since I don't use pork stock due to the saltiness. I can't get those larger sized bean cans, so used 3 of the smaller cans and it was quite popular. Thank Glen for another great, easy recipe! Oh, I added a bay leaf, because it's a soup and it seemed to ask for one.
Prefer bean and bacon . A lot. Learned on bacon. Transitioned long ago. Yum. If using great northern beans, let them cook down to almost no broth. Add ketchup, a little mustard, a little vinegar, little Worcestershire, brown sugar, and let it tou ken up some. Omg. Gotta make this soon.
I really enjoy your videos. I appreciate them. I wish there was more savory videos instead of desert videos. I don’t do deserts. I loved the butchery videos. They were really cool and informative. Thank you
Hello! This looks almost like Scandinavian pea soup with bacon . If you ever make it try it with some mustard, warm Punsch, and pancakes with jam for dessert. Its almost always served on Thursdays aswell :) Kind regards from Sweden
I use canned beans when it's convenient but I know how to cook beans 45 minutes in a pressure better if they've been soaked overnight and water if you go to Slocum overnight a pinch of baking soda works wonders makes for tender skins and a creamy broth
Hello from Montreal! Well cooking is not my day job, but many years ago I went to cooking school, we call it ITHQ, it's a school for those who want to work in the food industry... and I went also to the "Mezza Luna" a italian cooking school.... Like I just wrote in the begining, cooking did not became my day job, but as the decades went on, I have come across many snobish foodies ... just dont bother about those who makes a fit because of can beans! Let them soak! :-)
The only two things I'd have done would be to par-boil the beans before adding them in and I always add in a little kombu for glutamates to a soup. Canned beans are only ever partly cooked to compensate for their being cooked again later on. However, this leaves a lot of ogliosaccharides that cause, ahem, music and you can avoid that rater well by par-cooking them and the kombu just ups the flavor really nicely to anything with a lot of water in it.
In America, there's tinned beans with tomato sauce (of brown sugar or maple), onion and bacon. It's still considered baked beans. A style of. Aside from the vegetables, I don't really see much about it that's soup.
Dried beans are better, but here's the trick... pressure cook them but be sure to add vinegar at the very start. This keeps the outsides slightly firm instead of mushy. The vinegar trick only works with pressure cooking.
I don’t know how you do it! Getting out the volume of high quality production you do. I and I’m sure most of us very much appreciate it, but please don’t burn yourself out.
My only concern w. canned foods is that they say some chemicals from the metal or coatings inside the cans can leach into the food. I use a lot of canned San Marzanos, but would like to try and grow them nxt year.
Hockey is underway, football is going strong, baseball playoffs and basketball is causing international diplomatic crisis’s. Yep it’s time for bean with bacon soup to give us the strength needed in these wacky times. Go Leafs Go! Go Roughriders Go! Go Seahawks Go! Go Astros Go! Go Raptors Go!!
I am a Saskatchewan ROUGHRIDERS fan. The Ottawa Rough Riders folded in 1996. Present day Ottawa fans cheer for the Redblacks or the Rouge et Noir as they say in French.
pre 2000 bean with bacon soup or post 2000 :) I miss the old bean with bacon but im odd and would just throw it on bread with butter and eat it raw lol... dont try it at home
I have to say, as a kid, bean and bacon soup sounded disgusting. As an adult, I recognize that my child-self had some poor judgement. Looks like a great soup template, Glen. Nicely done.

Michael Thomas love that idea! Though Matty is a sweetheart in person, I can see how travelling with him could be a challenge.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking where did you find that wonderful ladle holder? i can't seem to find anything like it ?

EGG NOG RICE PUDDING!? TALK TO US GLEN.
ikr?
Mmmmm, desert! 😋🥄🍚
Right!
Thanks for this! Now, I want to eat bean soup.
When I make a bean soup, I puree a part of the beans to make the soup creamier and thicker.
I like to use Northern Beans, leave out the tomato and add cream for a yummy savory winter soup.

Really enjoying your soups stocks, and broths. You have broadened my horizons considerably.
Bean soup is my favorite! Soup is my favorite, infinite possibilities.
I also use canned beans. And i do my owen sourdough bread. Canned beans are 100% soft. I like that. Use them for my 3 can soup.

gotta have to try this, looks hearty, filling and delicious.
That looks Awesome !!!
Good old hearty soup, yum. That stock would be great for the Italian wedding soup. Food for thought Glen🧐
If I say very good then it is not enough to share my feelings, rather i should say it is wonderful!
Great recipe. I like the mix of black-eyed peas with the beans. Serve it with steamed rice?
Just found your channel and subbed. My next soup recipe to try!
Awesome brother. 👍🍻
Hey Julie and Glen 🙋🏻♀️🌹🌹Great delicious and full of amino acids from the amazing efforts you and Jamie did Chef Glen 👏👏👏👌👌👌👌thanks a lot🙏❤️❤️

Were you as excited as Todd was in El Camino making this
Almost a Hungarian Goulash soup, great work! It should taste good.
Well this looks delicious. Dunno what else to say 🤷

Would a couple of beaten egg yolks and 1/2 cup of cream stirred in after turning off the heat make this even more sumptuous?

Wonder if this would work with Turkey Bacon?? I know it has less fat.
I love leftover soup.
Been watching El Camino, Glen?
reprimanded1 just saw it, great movie. Comes off like the Cohen Bros.
This soup would be even better if you got some wheat bread and cut it into strips, then lightly toasted it to dip into the soup.

Since I live on left-overs, I salt the bowl not the pot. Just a suggestion.
I really like those tall stainless pots you use, who is the manufacturer ?
Calphalon
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking Thanks for the reply, do they have a specific name or style that I can search for?

It is the Accucore Set - long discontinued.

Soaking beans isn't always feasible. Pro canned beans here!
Beans..ham...pinch brn sugar...minced onion...then serve ontop cornbread...carrotsncelery w beans=ugh
How bored do you have to be to email someone about using canned beans on youtube? What a hill to die on!
fat todd brought me here
Great video as usually. I get that convenience is a factor but let's not say canned is better than a quality dried bean. 🥴
I'm taking a stand and saying it. Canned is better than dried.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking haha you do you!

people who are way too passionate about beans, apparently
Ross McCartan lots of crazies out there. Surprised they aren’t going to his house and throwing bags of beans through his windows.
