    You're missing a trick Clive. Drive the motor with a circuit bypass - make the freshener 'chuff' fast like a steam train at speed and ignite the result.. For shits and giggles.

      @@SionynJones Oh, I like that Idea! With Jack's design it would be awesome! Two phase. Single push of button, one burst, hold button, "Chuff" action, throw switch, perpetual "Chuff". Throw switch in other direction (we will need a propane or other suitable gas for this) Constant Stream out of the Pumpkin's (Jack-O-Lantern) Mouth. Eyes too? Ears? Gotta Go. I need to make a schematic. Thanks Guys!!

      @@bigclivedotcom too big and bulky for my application. These boxes are quite small. I've tried solenoids etc but nothing pulls as hard for 2 x AA's.
      My lids are mostly spring loaded and the custom catches I make need a good tug.

    Thanks Big Clive - you solved a problem for me. I pulled one of these apart and couldn't figure out how the cogs fitted. Your video solved that for me - and now I am thinking of putting a candle next to it in the bathroom to see the combustion flame every time it squirts!! 😂

      I added a steel fire nozzle to mine for that, as it tended to flash back into the unit after a burst of fire.

  • @SionynJones
    @SionynJones 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Ah someone already hacked one in to fire breathing pumpkin. it's on hacks day. Basically he splices a ardunio and ping sensor on switch and a candle as the source of ignition.
    You're right about being a common unit his was basically the same thing but took a bigger bottle and used acetone as the propellant.

    Johnson & Johnson has simplified this construction quite a bit since this video was made. Big Clive may have tested the "SCJ-158" version of this pump controller and actuator assembly. I have just aquired a "SCJ-160" with the manufacture date MAY 06 2020. PCB "PB775B01M22-R-01A". This model has approx. half the components of what Big Clive showed in this video. I grabbed the complete air freshener thing at the electric waste return, because I need the small clicky button to fix a car battery charger from LIDL that was broken...

    I think I have seen somewhat similar LED and light sensor arrangements with black plastic spacers like that used in VCRs as interruptors for detecting whether a tape is in or not. Also, I have been wondering for the longest time: how would you spell the term used at 8:45? Footery? Futtery? Futurey? I think the closest equivalent in American English would be "finicky."

    I can verify that the dispensing module is a "generic" module, because I have a model that has the bare module covered by a shell (a single piece of conformed white plastic) with a cutout that matches to that button down where the sensor is located. It's only the shell that's different. It's collecting dust in a drawer in one of our bathrooms since it never came with any cartridges.
    I opened it up. It seems to have a much more larger PCB than the one in the video.

    As a party "trick" a friend had set one of these up in front of his toilet, on a shelf. After a few drinks, the men would wander into the bath, flip up the seat and relax... only to be greeted with a spray into the face from the damned thing. He thought it was immensely funny... until the next day, when the bugger had to clean up the mess created by surprising men when they were urinating. He never did it again :)

    Awesome Video as always, kind of reminds me when you tried making a flame thrower with one. I know it failed but why don't you try again? Except this time put a bit of distance between the spray nozzle and the flame. I reckon the force of the spray was putting out the flame. Putting some distance between it will allow the spray to atomise and wont put it out. Just food for thought!

    I bloody hate these things, my sister got them from my Mum after she died a few years ago, I hated them then & I still can't abide them now. There you are casually sat minding your own business & then it starts spitting that typical nasty "Fake as F@#k Air freshener stink" that doesn't smell of fresh air AT ALL (usualy some ultra strong floral niff that assaults your nasal passage like being puched up the nostrils with the whole contents of Royal Chelsea flower show) & just makes you go "eww what's that stank, it's SO STRONG!!" & then sends you into a coughing & sneezing fit. My mum had them in EVERY ROOM too. So there was no escape either. My sister's not that keen either but still refills them for some unknown reason. Nasty & really intrusive. Shame you can't get joke refills of rotten egg, Fish & Bathroom after heavy night on hot curry fragrance..if only!

      You might get somewhere with a charcoal based filter - they use charcoal in gasmasks... and odor-eater insoles.

    • @matthewmiller6068
      @matthewmiller6068 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd go for the charcoal filter. I know here in the USA there are Filtreete oder eliminator furnace filters that have charcoal on them, they work very well $15 ea at WalMart. We had smokers in the apartment below us, after buying 3 $150 HEPA units and needing more I noticed the 20x20x1 filters perfectly fit a box fan (hold on with 2 pieces of tape). We already had a couple $20 box fans and $30 in charcoal furnace filters did more than the HEPA filters in a fraction of the time. And since we use them "as needed" they last longer than they would in a furnace.

    • @WaltonPete
      @WaltonPete 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      karebu2
      As a number of people have already mentioned activated charcoal is good for absorbing odours and believe it, or not, but Febreze (do a search if you've never heard of it) actually chemically changes certain odour molecules to be either inert or to smell more pleasant, which is how they can claim it's effectiveness. It does, however, still utilise the masking of smells through the use of perfume, so may not be ideal, depending on the application.

    The ones that take the bigger can aren't much different. I've had to repair a few of them for my parents as their too cheap to buy a new one. I don't blame them really considering you pay $20 USD for just the unit itself without a can d' odur to go with it. It was a simple matter of cleaning the gears and relubing them with some white lithium grease. They worked perfectly afterward. That said it might be fun to have a play about with that motion sensor as it seems to have a quite simple operation. Perhaps attaching it to a small cap gun of some sort.

    We picked up the wrong cartridges for these by mistake a while back - if you can't swap the plastic ring, a stack of 1p coins under the cartridge will push it up so it works.

    You should try and use this for your air freshener flamethrower project, since it won't need all that nonsense with the needle on the end of the can to make it ignite and spray properly.

    I bought one of these then baulked at the cost of refills so it lies inert and unloved gathering dust. Generic cartridges you say?? Cheapo you say??? Think I'll pop over to ebay in a minute. Cheers Clive!

    I think every air freshener i have seen is using one of 3 types of cartridges.
    The small one show here, a medium sized one like a fat deodorant bottle, and a huge one like a can of bug spray.
    It seems you can always swap them out simply by putting on that plastic cap that came with the original cartridge or by removing it.
    At leas i've got yet to find one where you can't do that.

    can you add an igniter from a lighter to the top, so when the electrical motor gets juice the igniter ignites so you got a little fireball whenever some halloween inspired people come around?

  • @mbaker335

    I have always thought these things should be potted including the canister. If you were a 'bad guy' it would be too easy to have a canister of concentrated nastiness. Put the guts into a blanked off electrical junction box. Use sticky pads to place in a public place with a timer for switch on. It could contain so many types of nastiness as well as the awful smell that these 'fresheners' push out.
