    I just switched to safety razor a couple of weeks ago and I realized again how marketing is fooling us. 5 blades bullshit, brutal prices, that's what cartridge razors provide. And I too was fooled for 20 years.

    I used to belong to the dollar shave club. I switched back to Mach 3 from Gillette a couple years ago. Last week, after seeing the Harry's display at Walmart, decided to give it a shot. No nicks, smooth, and the handle is well balanced (as advertised). There's also a blade on the back of the top for getting close under the nose and evening out sideburns. I was surprised I liked it that much. I've been watching videos on re-sharpening disposables and hoping to just get down to purchasing a replacement blade once every six months or so.

      I was so glad I finally gave Harry's a try I normally stopped buying and trying new things just stick with something that's good and that works but once while it's nice to try something new and so glad I gave Harry's a try very very good shave it was the particular razors that said they were sharper and their original now they seem to have removed that but I guess they're still using the newer sharper ones really good razor my current favorite... The Schick hydro series is a pretty comfortable shave although I do get nicked up from it a lot sometimes.

    Had I not switched to DE Safety Razors, Harry's would still be my choice. Harry's gives a quick, nice, close and comfortable shave. I have nothing negative at all to say about them. And quite a bit less expensive than other multi blade cartridges.
    The thing about about DE shaving is I have to make multiple passes. But it is still more enjoyable for me.

    • @Deadbuck73
      @Deadbuck73 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joefitzpatrick3361 well… the OC razors are a bit different of a feel.. I have a Gillette Bostonian which I absolutely love. I also have several Gillette DeLuxe Criterions. They definitely are something to treat with respect but I rarely cut myself with any of my DE razors. My daily summer razor is a Gillette executive razor. It is super smooth for me year round but I mostly use it or a fat boy in the warmer months. The OC razors tend to work better in the cooler months. Ymmv! They are very efficient at removing several days of growth. You will definitely be more connected to your blade with the OC so it’s important to not give much pressure but rather let the weight of the razor do the work. You will get comfortable with angle soon enough and you will have fine shaves in just a couple passes… BBS shaves are doable but really unnecessary on the regular! 😆

    Thanks to a coupon, I recently bought my first can of Barbasol Sensitive Skin (can has orange stripes) which I really like after 2 uses. Almost no scent. Still very thick but it does not take much to shave. Do not think it dries my skin as much as the original. This can, along with my other soaps, will no doubt last me a year or more.

    I tried the Harry’s program a couple years back. I found the cartridges very irritating. The Gillette Mach 3 and Fusion were much smoother and the overall results were better. I started DE wet shaving this past summer and with a bit of practice and following some advice/encouragement from my local shave products vendor, I continue to use a DE system with very good results.
    I am using a Feather AS - D 2 razor and Feather blades. I am very happy with the results (2 passes). I also use a Feather Artisan Club folding Razor and Feather Pro Guard blades at the barber shop. Again after a bit of practice - very good results.
    This video is very informative. I have noticed however many you- tubers demonstrating the DE products shave very fast and nicks results as in this presentation. One thing the cartridges have over the DE shavers - speed! I have found slowing down and enjoying the shave, minimizes nicks. As soon as I rev it up...nicks.
    Thanks for taking the time to put together this video.

    I have a Harry's Razor AND I am wet shaver. I find that HR is particularly good on the neck esp if previously irritated by a rough DE(aggressive)blade in the area. I have never had a subscription. I took part in their annual Movember Event and got a razor, shave gel and 5 cartridges package for $20. Since, I use the razor infrequently I just replace the cartridges about once a year(I think it's another) set 5. BTW, Harry's changed the build of the razor slightly in 2015. I have the 2013 model. I have seen people requesting to buy an older model but they are GONE. I lucked out.
    I must say, you are one strange character but that makes these videos entertaining. ;-)

    Naw, Fat Boy didn’t cut you, Feather did, LOL! I bought 20 Feathers after I had been DE shaving for about three months and figured that my technique was good enough. Well, with Astra SP, Gillette SB, or Dorco Prime Platinum, my technique was just fine. With Feather, I couldn’t use my alum block enough to stop bleeding from all the nicks. Then I learned from a TH-camr that Feathers are so fine that coarse beards likely dulled/deformed them at the microscopic level after one pass, causing issues with subsequent passes. Sure enough, after borrowing my son’s microscope and comparing a one-pass Feather to a one-pass Astra, it was true: the Feather was all chewed up and my neck and left jaw paid the price. Oh, well, live and learn! Great video!

    The Harry’s is easy and comfortable to use. Does an acceptable job, but doesn’t get as close as the Gillette Fusion in my experience. Now I shave daily with a vintage DE Gillette Slim. You have to be more careful and it takes longer, but it will reward me with the smoothest face of any modern razor I’ve ever used.
    I can go over and over stubbly areas with the modern cartridges (especially Harry’s) and it won’t get any closer. It does what it does in the first pass and that’s it. You just end up irritating your face.

    I'm considering picking up a vintage Gillette but I'm stuck trying to decide between a Slim Adjustable, and a 40s Super Speed. The WWII era buff in me likes the idea of the Super, but the shaver in me likes the idea of adjustable. Might need both...

    Maybe you should try an old 1940's Superspeed razor with a BiC Chrome-Platinum blade. I get a BBS 3-pass shave with 'zero' cuts/weepers and it's a bullet-proof shave for me. I don't know about the Fat Boy's, but I know my old Superspeed along with my Edwin Jagger Kelvin and Merkur Futur (also with BiC Chrome-Platinum blade) are the three most sure-fire perfect shaves in my den of 8 different razors.

  • @Supertomiman

    I just shaved with a safety razor for the first time ever yesterday. I can report that cartridge razors do give a closer shave, however only if they have 4 blades or more. Nonetheless they do tug an incredible amount, whilst the safety razor doesn't. Whenever I shave with a cartridge razor, I can tell within 12 hours where all of the ingrown hairs are going to form painful bumps. It's been over 24 hours now and I think that the safety razor gave me absolutely none of those. I think I'm a convert just for that reason.

    • @Deadbuck73
      @Deadbuck73 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Supertomiman as you practice with safety razors you will come to naturally find the right angle and pressure to use and you will get much closer shaves with a single pass shave... I’m flying with an old school open comb Gillette and there’s no cartridge that can beat it...

    What you're not getting about the Harry's.....and it took me a long time to discover this....is that it has a secret, single trimming blade on the top of the other side of the lubrication strip, for fine shaving in the corners next to your nostrils etc. You flip the razor over to use it. You don't have to use the panel of 5 blades to try and shave the smallest corners of your face.

    I have an awesome gillette Fatboy razor restored in Rhodium looks as good as new it's a beautiful classic 60s design icon ...but no matter how I try it never gives me as good a shave(always nicks me ) as a decent quality cartridge multiblade razor..and that disappoints me . I have other safety razors notably a Hone type 15 in brass that gives me an excellent shave with a single blade ... but the Fatboy just don't get along with my face I guess so it sits there looking pretty and not earning it's keep ..probably need to put it back on E bay ! The one thing I have learned about old fashioned safety razors is that each razor is different and definately does not suit all people . Also multiblade cartridge razors although a rip off are in the main a good shave for 99% of men out there a one size fits all deal.

    *Channel's like these is how I'm slowly drifting to the Dark Side - DE shaving. Got a Merkur a few years ago. Got scared after cutting myself the first time. Now I'm back at it with the same 100 blade box I bought at the same time. I cut half my face with DE and half with Mach 3. Soon I will be DE 100% because that part of my face is so smooth, it doesn't look real!*

    Were you on Santa's naughty list in 2017 ? Getting a Harry's razor, you must have been very very bad. 😁 If you are in a pinch for time you can just use bar soap instead of Barbasol. I have done this a few times with irish spring bar soap and it does work better than barbasol for a safety razor. You don't need to get much lather, just lather on your hands and face quick. Irish does leave a pretty slick surface but not sure about all bar soaps.

    My experience is thus: I have shaved with a twin blade Gillette Sensor II for years. About 25 or so. Three years ago to the day (almost) i jumped on the band wagon and got into simple double edge safety razors. My barber sold them. He told me, "well you may not get any better of a shave, just different. Maybe less irritation because the blade only cuts once." Sounded good, so i got one. then I got another, because well, guys love tools. especially nice heavy tools. Professional tools. Beautiful tools. We are succors that just love well made stuff! I was looking for the "perfect shave" that i had not yet found! Then I found the myriad of razor blades that will make the perfect tool, really perfect. Coated, non-coated, open combed vs closed comb razors. You get the idea. Well, The first day I used the "old school" safety razor I learned what the hell a steptic pencil was for and why you would need one. I cut myself more than ever with this new tool than ever with the multi's. then I learned about technique. Oh yeah, now I was in the club of real men, with real tools, expensive tools and I was going to only pay like .03 cent per shave! Oh yeah! I kept at it and stopped cutting myself. now an then it still happens. I decided it was time to try the old Sensor II just for fun after all these, count them, 3 years! All I can say is wow. There is, believe it or not, a reason why razor development has changed. These expensive cartridges are very good. Very good indeed. It took a lot of time to be objective, but I have found that they shave close, they shave fast and most importantly, the do shave very, very comfortably! So with a new set of 100 Feather blades and some Sharks, a ton of Crystals, I will probably use them up or maybe sell them off until they are gone. So which one is better? It is a subjective thing at best. My face says, you're not a real man because you can't shave with a straight and believe me I tired this more than once. No freaking way! There is a reason when you look back in the up to 1905 or so a reason why almost everyone wore a well groomed long beard. Soldiers had mustaches and goatees, because when faced with a straight razor, most of us are real pussies... It freaking hurts! So until they invented a safety razor that was reasonably comfortable, the military allowed beards. go figure that! So, jump on guys, it really isn't the money that matters when you are paying for those expensive multi's. When you count all the singles you are going to start getting, it will make the multi blade thing seem like just normal everyday expense compared to the the hobby or the singles. But you don't need to take my word for it, you get 2 or 3 or 4 new "tools" and try 6 or 10 different brands of blades. You'll have so much fun, you'll probably make a youtube video of yourself in front of a steamy mirror telling all the kids how to really shave. It'll be awesome!

      The type of skin you have also plays a huge role. Once I got into DE razors I never looked back. Cartrige razors irritated my skin so much, I could physicaly not touch it after a shave without hurting, and it also remained red for at least 5-8 hours after, even after using every conceivable after shave. So yeah, I guess if your skin can take it, cartrige razors are good enough, and might even be better for you if you dont want to be mindful of the way you shave and/or want to be done quick. But for people with sensitive skin like me I could not recommend switching to DE razors enough.

      Everybody has different opinions, preferences, skin types, beard types you name it. What works for one person most likely won't work for everyone. It pays to stay open minded and to experiment every once in a while. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new! If you're an average guy looking for a close clean shave that you can have in under 5 minutes for around 10 bucks a month, then subscription services like the dollar shave club or Harry's would be a good place to start, or both! If you're one of those guys who likes the process, the pre-shave oil, the mug, the brush, the lather, the multiple passes, ect. And don't mind it taking 15-20 minutes, go ahead and use a straight razor or a safety razor. Whatever works best for your time, your skin, and your budget.

    After using saftey razors and cartridge razors for a while I just have to say this cartridges will always give a closer shave as they pull the hair slightly while saftey razors will always have a slight stubble unless you go against the grain cartridge razors will cause ingrown hairs and irritation more often even with skill while a saftey razor will give almost none but without skill it will give waaaaaaaaay more irritation cartridge razors are more accessible and easy to use as they rotate while a saftey razor is more difficult to use especially for someone like me with limited control of their hands shaking overall I'd say cartridges give better shaves while saftey razors are more cost efficient and let you buy more luxury products with that spare money if you dont like the idea of either I'd suggest an epilator they hurt like hell on your face but give long lasting results are cheap last years and aslong as you exfoliate often you wont get ingrown hairs when it grows back through
