Pilot Craig Simon of Fly Louisiana flew Jim Keaty out to Grand Isle to assess all of the damage that Hurricane Ida left behind.
What was found was heartbreaking. With thousands of people being left without power, water, food, and some are completely homeless.
Our neighbors are in a serious crisis, and we need to come together to help.

@@bobvogel2412 His comment isn't really as heartless as it sounds...every one wants to live right on the water, but it has ALWAYS been a risky place to live because hurricanes have always been occurring. If you insist on living a near sea level, at the very edge of the continent, you ought to accept this as a constant possibly.
If an area is totally destroyed, it could be declared undevelopable and then the same thing wouldn't happen in the same place.
But as always, people will build right up to the waters edge again. And when it happens again, everybody wants federal money and everyone's insurance goes up to cover the first mile inland. Why not back away from the water, or just accept the risk if you want permanent, expensive housing right on the beach.

@@bobvogel2412 I had a cabin in norther California. I loved it there in the summer. I got sick and tied of forest fires so I sold it. I did not have to wait until my cabin burned down to understand that a forest fire is a disrupter of life. I say this as NoCal is burning. I don’t know if that cabin is still there. And Bob, one other thing. You said you could not imagine hunker down. I am in the 70s and live in SoCal. I I do Imagine hunkering down. I now live in an apartment. I walk two miles a day x7. I have enough food for two months and a way to cook it.. Lots of water and also water filters encase the water gets contaminated. I have batteries and a way to charge them. I have hand held radios for com and good long range radio receiver for emergency directions. Alway gas in the car. Bob, shit happens. It can happen national or local. You really need to prepare. There are always far too many people that become victims because they didn’t have the most basic of basics. You need to Think of what would happen if you have to hunker down. SHTF. It happened to those folds. Just part of life. Think that maybe one day a Supper Chill that freezes everything up for weeks. Ohhh I just thought, that happens all the time in Chicago anyways. Actually Grand Isle has been sitting in a bullseye for decades, just never hit square on before by a big hurricane. Katrina just missed them and Rita got pretty close as well with some damages, but Ida was right on them. Hopefully a lot of people evacuated. The distribution of damages might be a clue regarding the quality of building materials used and the varying construction methods. Hard to avoid high storm surge and 150mph winds.

Grand Isle, Louisiana area and the Bolivar Peninsula area in Texas are probably the two most dangerous places to live on the Gulf Coast. These locations are only a few feet above sea level with no natural barriers (like the 35 ft. sand Dunes found in Central and S. Texas beaches). It only takes a weak storm to over-wash the beach in Grand Isle and the Bolivar Peninsula. I honestly can't believe Insurance Companies would even cover homes built in these areas. These homes will be constantly destroyed about every 10-20 years on average, if that long. I have a degree in Geography and I have written papers on the natural erosional properties of Gulf Coast Beaches. These homes being destroyed are a natural process of Barrier Island movement (erosion). If it weren't for the sea wall, Galveston would also be on this list, even though it is still very vulnerable to a major hurricane (especially the areas not protected by the sea wall). Once you move further down the coast towards Port Aransas, the natural Dune Barrier becomes much more established and offers much greater protection from Storm Surge.
