I have the remains of a belt from the Singer 185J model. The inner part of the belt is a twined / twisted thick thread. This is laid into four loops with ends some how secured. This four strand loop is encased in a tightly woven light canvas? . The canvas has the remains of what may be rubber coating the outside of the canvas and maybe even the twined inner thread. There appears to be a seam along one side of the light canvas. This seam would hold the twined thick looped thread inside the folded canvas. This belt probably measured about fifteen inches. It was probably about three eighths to one quarter of an inch wide.
I also tried a long rubber band in place of a belt and this was able to move the feed dogs and upper needle bar.
I think any loop that is sufficiently tight and non-slip would turn the wheel.
I did not think of elastic but I may try this on some other sewing machines that need belts. Thanks for posting this great idea of yours. It is great to see your very creative and economical solution.

Measure out 28 inches on your tiny elastic and pass through your machine then double knot it
