So this game is basically an Americanized version of the Strugatsky Brothers' sci-fi novel _Roadside Picnic_ (which would lay the groundwork for the 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky film _Stalker_ , which in turn inspired the videogame series, _S.T.A.L.K. E. R.,_ and also maybe kind of predicted the Chernobyl Meltdown Disaster nearly a decade before it happened... though given that the Strugatskys, like other Soviets who actually paid attention to what their government spent their budget on, were quite aware of just how underfunded, poorly-managed, and finicky the technology in Chernobyl's particular style of nuclear reactor was, it was less a prediction and more an eventuality that did come to pass). The Washington State Exclusion Zone is very much like the Zone of Exclusion featured in the novel; a once normal area that through some vaguely hinted at, apocalyptic or near-apocalyptic scenario, suddenly stopped working according to the natural laws and began displaying anomalous properties that seriously fucked with space and time, giving objects bizarre traits and abilities, and mutating the wildlife (and people) that sustained prolonged contact with this area of land, in extremely unsettling ways. in the novel, the Zone was visited by aliens (called "Visitors"), who stayed for a bit, littered the area with their tech and toxic byproducts from using said tech, which by human standards was supernatural in how it could flagrantly violate the Laws of Science, Physics, and Nature, at least as it was understood by "primitive" mankind. This is the meaning of the title _Roadside Picnic_ , which one character, attempting to explain what the Zone is and what the Artifacts are to a new Stalker, just exploring the Zone for the first time, uses the analogy that the Visitors were just that: visitors from another world or dimension that obeyed different laws of physics, thermodynamics, time, space, etc., who came to Earth, maybe to scout the planet out for colonization, or maybe even simpler than _that_ , they just wanted a quiet isolated spot to stop over at, like a family going to a remote campground in a wildlife park or preserve for vacation. Like most "tourists," they didn't necessarily obey the overarching rule that park rangers instruct visitors to these natural areas ("Take Only Photographs; Leave Only Footprints"), and proceeded to leave all their broken down crap and garbage without caring about the negative ecological impact it would have on the world or its inhabitants. The inhabitants, by which the one character explaining it to the other helpfully reminds him and us is humanity, are stand-ins for the dumb, unfortunate animals that wander into these areas after the Visitors left, that proceed to go rooting around in the trash they left behind, and either die from being poisoned by the Visitor's litter... or worse, it affects them on a genetic level and causes defects in their kids, only instead of plastic beer can rings getting caught around their necks and choking them, or eating chocolate and going into seizures, people touching or even merely standing too close to artifacts can experience memory loss/ dementia, can be rendered completely translucent, totally see-through save for their brains, eyes, and Central Nervous System, can be jettisoned either forward or backwards into time (usually physically, though in a couple instances, it only sent their _minds_ forwards or backwards, making their perceptions hundreds of times faster to the point of psychic premonitions), being partially phased and melded into the walls and floors, but not being fortunate enough to die as they are trapped forever with no clear way to remove them without accidentally cutting them open due to how their particles have fused with the object they failed to phase through, and those are the TAME anomalies and examples of body horror! Of course, rich, dumb, eccentric weirdoes are fascinated by such "amusements," and often have money to hurl at poor people who would gladly walk barefoot into Hell on Earth just to earn enough money to get by, to put food on their tables or give their families decent lives. That these poor schmuck's chances of survival are slim is no skin off the rich folks' noses; there will always be more new hires and reserves waiting in the wings for their chance to either shine like stars... or die horrifically graphic but interesting deaths.
I rarely stumble upon a great comment. You have a something better. An amazing comment. I hope you have a wonderful day and thank you for me giving a great introspection of a game series! :)

very fun game, looking forward to crashing into every anomaly I see!

I've only been getting general light amusement this whole time?!
When I played I barely got out of the car at all (it was too spooky to leave the car).
Just stay away from Tacoma, Seattle, and Lakewood and you’ll be okay 🤠
