So this group is called ‘Nga Tumanako’ which is 1 out of 49 groups that perform at “Te Matatini” which is a cultural festival that happens every 2 years. All 49 groups perform over the course of 3 days and are sorted into 3 pools, from those pools 12 of the best performing groups are called back to perform again to decide who will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd - 12th! A group performs a bracket which is made up of 7 times: Waiata Tira (choral, non compulsory), Whakaeke (entrance), Moteatea (chanting song), Waiata-a-Ringa (action song), Poi (twirling balls on a rope), Haka (war dance) and finnaly Whakawatea (exit). These items tell stories some old & new and explains to the people watching who they are and where they are from.

so performing so one of our most ancient traditions where haka, ngeri or dances with weapons would be performed on special occasions. in these modern time the tribes around the country come to te matatini to perform on the stage you just watched in a competition to become the best performers of the year.

The video you reacted to is a performance at our biggest cultural festival that happens every 2 years! A competition where you a required to do a 30 minute performance with a group that has max 40 performers 20 men 20 women you are judged on haka, singing and many other of our traditional dances! The group in the video are our current reigning champions. I would love to recommend other videos

    Kia Ora
Every group has a kaitātaki tāne (male leader) and kaitātaki wahine (women leader) who lead the Roopu (group). The person who started off with a karakia (prayer) at the beginning is a tohunga (expert) at what he does, which is karakia (prayer) hence why he spoke first to set the tone.

My cousin was shot dead he faced armed men, he was unarmed and did not back down. His baby daughter was 6, his partner was not there, she would have died beside him. Racism is worldwide. Your proud of the woman grow up. Women ….wahine always stand by and with the family. There is no gender in being Maori. You need to understand our culture.

I loved your reaction proud maori💖💖
There is a significant event that happens that each group writes about and performes a bracket of 7 items that tell a story of each tribe and sub tribes and how we link as one or whatever the significant topics group selects to speak about.
so to keep our culture alive this how we discuss most pollitical views aswell we do these kinds of events such as te matatini
The person is selected based on knowledge and skills most groups have a male and a female leader

“Wh” is pronounced like “f” in te reo Māori and we have dipthong vowels “ae” pronounced with the short vowel sounds for “a-e” so whakaeke sounds like “fa-ka-e-ke” :)

The competition your talking about is where this group is performing at in the video its called Matatini and there are categories that you must gain points in, each region of the country sends there best to the competition by having regional competitions and the winners go into the National comp that is Matatini
