I agree. All factors of survival have to be considered. I rate builds based on their viability in a full-length survival playthrough, accounting for their defensive abilities (at both low levels and high levels) and how well they gather resources (i.e. hunting prowess/foraging, versatility, resistance, etc.). For instance, on my own personal tier list, very few fish builds are ranked higher than A+ tier because the majority of fish players don't invest in parental care strategies, meaning they almost all suffer from a vulnerable early game.
The reason tierzoo goes off one specific aggressive predatory build as being high tier is based off how everyone in games abuses metas and only do rushing aggressive playstyles
Yeah, I think the main conflict of viewpoints here is the fact that not all species that are successful in real life will be successful in a video game context, or necessarily fun/rewarding to play as an individual.

Like what would you like to play more? Piranha where you play in a group and your goal is to deal so much dps that you kill your opponent. Or salmon where you play in a group and your goal is that enough players die so others can run to their spawn point.
Pfft, screw PVP. I'd rather be a top tier PVE species like a raven. Intelligence builds are broken in Outside for how much less risk there is. Housecats are also amazing, obviously S tier AFK farming off human players but also great stays if you want a more active urban playstyle.

It's important to note that TierZoo structures these similarly to Fighting Game tier lists. In fighting games, the tier of a character is based on how overall effective their kit is, their matchups against other fighters, and how effective their kit is compared to fighters with similar kits and the meta as a whole. Of course, the playstyle and preferences of the person making the list also impact placement to some degree, because bias is unavoidable
I wouldn't say just a fighting game, but more a survival game, but classing the individuals, not necessarily the species (exept for eusocial animals, that he treats a colony as equivalent to an individual).

The drawback of edutainment is that you still got to make it entertaining, also information overload is always an issue as there is a limit to how much info a human can take in in one session. For who? TierZoo did fine enough. At least in the last one of these (not so much this one), he seemed to not be on the same page with what TierZoo was doing... he's ranking them based on how good it would be to "play" as one individual species. Whereas he was ranking based on how viable the whole species is. Like a species might be super awesome at carrying on it's genes, but if they're individually weak and dying all the time, then that's a terrible species to choose to individually "play" as.

I think tierzoo also takes into account how fun they would be to play as, hence the passive sharks being average or slightly below average. Unlike baleen whales, they're not invincible once they reach the late game (a.k.a. adult stage). He does have this "the universe is a giant video game" vibe going on.
He's not assuming they need to fit to a specific idea. He's ordering them by stats, survivabilty and control over their terrain, you know, things that actually matter in the wild.
He also usually consider individual survivability, not the entire species (exept for eusocial animals). If a species teamwork increases the individual survivability, it is a bonus, but just being in a big group isn't, if it doesn't increase the chances of each individual to survive.
Very little of what Tierzoo prioritises matters in the wild all that much. It's pretty much based on playing animals as fighting game characters and not ecological viability.
3:30 well, he makes the tier list with the premise that every animal is a build in a videogame, so it's pretty obvious that builds whose gameplay consists in practically do nothing or have "frustrating mechanics" would end up in the bottom tiers

Yep Tierzoo rates characters based on individual player enjoyment and longevity. It's why he rates stuff like school fish pretty low, because if you play as a salmon or something you're playtime would likely not go very far. He also rates it against matchups, if you are the best Filter feeder in the game, then in the Filter feeder class you would be considered S tier. Which is a separate category from the "All animals" or "All fish" rankings. Your S tier on one class can be a B tier in the bigger scale.

Yeah mostly they’re ranked on effectiveness in correlation to potential engagement. That’s why filter feeders score so low while things like crows score so highly
If you look at tier lists for games like smash, you'll notice that every professional player has a relatively unique opinion on what is good and what isn't. Typically, this is based on their playstyle and their struggles. I think it might be best to imagine that TierZoo is a player of the "game" he's laying out, and he doesn't think that players who AFK for loot, or do silly, unnecessary things are good players. That's not to say he thinks those animals are genuinely unsucessful in the wild (most of the time). He's an aggressive PvPer, and prefers builds that are solo powerhouses, or who use small team strategies very effectively for PvP. These tier lists are for what *he* would select to play, and how likely he would be to play them. I think it's also fair to mention that the way he lays out his lists, C tier is very solid. Most animals are in C tier. D is below average, and B is above average, and A/S are the best of the best, adapted for their environments in ways that are highly effective, and very consistent. I really like these videos, they're fun! :D
This! I hate to be rude but I think this guy really missed the point.. If I were to play a game, playing an AFK style animal sounds incredibly boring compared to let's say, having a party you can communicate with as you all try to take down a boss/big player for loot. I appreciate him looking at it from a more analytical view, but that's simply not what the tiers tierzoo makes are for. Also great job pointing out how every tier list is different! I'm sure this guy's tierlists would be different as he would focus on things from a more real/analytical view instead of a gaming/fun view like tierzoo does. Regardless, they are both human so it makes sense for them to have conflicting opinions

I’d say the placement of the filter feeders is pretty fair not because they aren’t well adapted animals but because this is a tier list that judges how well a given shark fits into the stereotypical image of a shark
I think tier zoo don't like filter feeding, in the birds tier list flamingos were low, baleen whales were low in the cetacean list and now basking sharks and whale sharks. (sorry if english is bad)

I think where your gripe about TierZoo thinking that animals from a certain group have to stay relatively similar for them to be good comes from him seeing it as a game. From a game standpoint, taking a damage type (shark) and spending time to evolve it into an afk build is a worse playstyle then just fleshing out the abilities of the class you chose or just choosing an afk class from the start.

I started dying after Mako went into A. Honestly mf_elbow was the entertainment of this video.
I think tierzoo also takes into account how fun they would be to play as, hence the passive sharks being average or slightly below average. Unlike baleen whales, they're not invincible once they reach the late game (a.k.a. adult stage). He does have this "the universe is a giant video game" vibe going on.

Tier Zoo's videos are really entertaining and informative, it's amazing how he can incorporate gaming terms into them
He's not assuming they need to fit to a specific idea. He's ordering them by stats, survivabilty and control over their terrain, you know, things that actually matter in the wild.

He also usually consider individual survivability, not the entire species (exept for eusocial animals).
If a species teamwork increases the individual survivability, it is a bonus, but just being in a big group isn't, if it doesn't increase the chances of each individual to survive.
Very little of what Tierzoo prioritises matters in the wild all that much. It's pretty much based on playing animals as fighting game characters and not ecological viability.

I do agree that a lot of his choices don’t make any sense from a purely scientific view, but I’m pretty sure Tier Zoo is basing his tier lists more on the “gamer” side of the animals.

I mean, they do make sense if you pay attention to what he's saying. When he's saying playthrough, he obviously means life. For example, while you may rate a fully grown adult Whale Shark higher, it's their whole life he's counting not just peak.

I love his content, but I got to admit. I'm getting a bit annoyed at him not understanding that he's doing this tier list as though a game journelist. Sure basking sharks may be pretty well adapted, but he's ranking them based on in the game of Outside, people can choose a shark. And because of that, I think his views of a shark that filter feeds not really being a fun shark to play is valid.
Yep Tierzoo rates characters based on individual player enjoyment and longevity. It's why he rates stuff like school fish pretty low, because if you play as a salmon or something you're playtime would likely not go very far. He also rates it against matchups, if you are the best Filter feeder in the game, then in the Filter feeder class you would be considered S tier. Which is a separate category from the "All animals" or "All fish" rankings. Your S tier on one class can be a B tier in the bigger scale.
Im the opposite, this guy has been saying what ive been saying about tierzoo for a year now. Tierzoo makes great conflict, but I can't get behind how he rates creatures. I know its just a different perspective, but I think it just makes things predictable and is naturally bias against some specific niches. All forms of survival must be considered for a tier list in my mind. Some folks like us just aint a fan with how he rates things, but hey he still makes good content so whatever. The only real problem with tierzoo are his prehistoric videos, by god do they suck major ass. Using decade old outdated info. Troodon using tools, you out of your mind dude? Quetz being scavengers, dude thats inaccurate af. Rant over, just got mixed feelings on the dude.

I somewhat think you’re both right and wrong about the tiering, while he is wrong in terms of adaptation and niche you’re wrong about how funny the meme of nature being an MMO is.
I think he takes it way too literally, the channel is obviously doing a fun take on education. The MMO formula makes it so much better to learn, guess its an acquired taste.

Like you can’t deny the effectiveness of being an untouchable filter feeder but that’s contrasted by its lack of player engagement is what puts it at a lower tier than a Mako shark. It’s kinda why Ravens are so high in the city meta despite being mostly scavengers.
Basking sharks also get a post-mortal bonus of having their decaying bodies look super odd and occasionally convicing people that they've just found a dead plesiosaur.
If I saw a Goblin Shark in real life I would immediately die of a Heart Attack, so that's reason enough for me to put them in S Tier

Yeah mostly they’re ranked on effectiveness in correlation to potential engagement. That’s why filter feeders score so low while things like crows score so highly

If you look at tier lists for games like smash, you'll notice that every professional player has a relatively unique opinion on what is good and what isn't. Typically, this is based on their playstyle and their struggles. I think it might be best to imagine that TierZoo is a player of the "game" he's laying out, and he doesn't think that players who AFK for loot, or do silly, unnecessary things are good players. That's not to say he thinks those animals are genuinely unsucessful in the wild (most of the time). He's an aggressive PvPer, and prefers builds that are solo powerhouses, or who use small team strategies very effectively for PvP. These tier lists are for what *he* would select to play, and how likely he would be to play them.
I think it's also fair to mention that the way he lays out his lists, C tier is very solid. Most animals are in C tier. D is below average, and B is above average, and A/S are the best of the best, adapted for their environments in ways that are highly effective, and very consistent.

This! I hate to be rude but I think this guy really missed the point.. If I were to play a game, playing an AFK style animal sounds incredibly boring compared to let's say, having a party you can communicate with as you all try to take down a boss/big player for loot. I appreciate him looking at it from a more analytical view, but that's simply not what the tiers tierzoo makes are for.
Also great job pointing out how every tier list is different! I'm sure this guy's tierlists would be different as he would focus on things from a more real/analytical view instead of a gaming/fun view like tierzoo does. Regardless, they are both human so it makes sense for them to have conflicting opinions

I’d say the placement of the filter feeders is pretty fair not because they aren’t well adapted animals but because this is a tier list that judges how well a given shark fits into the stereotypical image of a shark
I think tier zoo don't like filter feeding, in the birds tier list flamingos were low, baleen whales were low in the cetacean list and now basking sharks and whale sharks. (sorry if english is bad)
He’s mentioned in a couple videos he’s kinda biased because he takes the idea of how much fun someone would have playing a build into consideration a little. So more sedentary or filter feeding builds normally take a bit of a hit

4:00 I feel the reason he bases tiers on how effective they are in combat many times is that hes imagining this as a videogame, thats kinda the point of the channel. Hes saying "this is how good this organism is to play as" not "how well do these do in their environment" per say.

I think where your gripe about TierZoo thinking that animals from a certain group have to stay relatively similar for them to be good comes from him seeing it as a game. From a game standpoint, taking a damage type (shark) and spending time to evolve it into an afk build is a worse playstyle then just fleshing out the abilities of the class you chose or just choosing an afk class from the start.
