Casual here. Almost no ladder. Just 2v2 and party modes (Events 1v1 has a hidden ELO). Did the number crunching way back in 2016|2017, and it was just an asinine grind for a F2P to max out an account. Game is designed so you'll never max out without paying through the roof. And when you get there, they will arbitrarily shift the goal line again. Over the years, as a F2P, had a front row seat and a hearty chuckle seeing SC constantly honing its psychological marketing craft. Excellent video Ash.

APR 2021: 3-5 years for F2P to max out with Magical Items. NOV 2021: Just 7 months later, Level 14 and Champions extended the F2P grind again to 5-8 years. MAR 2023: SHRINKFLATION, cost of the Passes increased but value reduced drastically. JUN 2023: LEVEL 15. Getting all cards to Level 15 takes double the time it takes all cards from base level to 14. IMPOSSIBLE F2P GRIND! Spending money in Clash Royale is just fool's gold, because they will extend the finish line and leave players perpetually grinding.
Gold Pass from Supercell games is a prime example of price anchoring. Everyone calls them “amazing value”, but only because everything else seems like a bad value in comparison.

Somebody did the number crunching back in 2020, where basically a single Pass Royale only boosted your progression a meager 0.5 ~ 3.0% depending on how active and how good you are at the game. That is terrible value. Magic Items were only introduced Season 22 (almost 2 years later) and only then did the Pass Royale become value for the money. However, 7 months later in Season 29, Level 14 and Champions (the new limiting factor) was introduced. Except for the Book of Book Pass Royale (Season 22 to Season 44), everything in this game is relatively terrible value and barely contributes to your overall progression. Hence, this psychological marketing tricks video by Ash.
Good tips. My least favorite of all the money scams and traps is when someone has a 2013 car and they’re like “it’s not even 10 years old yet..” like no it’s actually 12 years old…… because it’s 2023 right now and you can purchase a 2025 car right now……. It makes absolutely no sense and it’s only used as a tool to make you not realize the car is a year older than the number on the car.. I actually can’t even wrap my head around how they’re legally able to do this……
Strangely, whenever people expose the psychological marketing tricks and predatory monetization on the official social media forums for Clash Royale (Reddit and the official Clash Royale TH-cam page), there are always these pro-corporation users that start defending Supercell and attacking back. If we are all consumers here, why the hell wouldn't we want easier progression and the ability to max out ASAP? Earn your money but do it honorably, and this is something SC has never shown which what put everybody I know off about this company from the early days of Clash Royale. Good chunk of us quit around CW2 when level caps were removed. For the remainder, Level 14 was the final straw. We still tune in now and then (especially to your channel Ash) but its a sad, yet hilarious state of affairs when you see things like the Update for Losers, Evolutions and Level 15. It's scummy and scammy but made us all realize we made the wise and correct decision to have never spent a cent in this game. Our money is better spent elsewhere.
I still play clash Royale, i believe in some ways its gotten better, like the new twists in gameplay in events that are seen every season. I actually look forward to playing them every season they are very creative and fun like the newest event snowstorm. And ive came to realize that by upgrading all your cards to level 14 you can earn more elite wild cards. By doing this the game naturally encourages you to upgrade cards not only for elite cards but also for clan wars. Upgrading a card to level 15 boosts your tower power by alot so the game really does encourage you to upgrade every card. I still think level 15 was a bad idea, it was a straw that broke the camels back for alot of people, not only level 15 but the introduction of gold/diamond pass which nerfed the rewards. And the fact that they called the update "the update for losers". Yeah they made alot of mistakes. I used to spend money on this game but no longer will I because why spend money on a game just to upgrade a card that might become level 16 one day? They really shot themselves in the foot monetary wise i noticed that the amount of people with pass royale has decreased drastically and im one of those people who refuses to give this company any more money too
In Cod Mobile there are lucky draws. You draw with payed points ( cod points) and get a reward which is dublicate protected until you got everything. Most of the rewards are pretty shit, noone really wants them. Getting the best rewards earlier then on the last draws are almost impossible ( the odds are terrible). The price per draw goes higher with every spin. So you start with a very small amount of money ( It's like 40 cent or something) but it goes up really fast until it gets really expensive before you realize. Obviously you just want the best rewards, for example a cool character skin or a legendary weapon etc. So what happened to me is that I started to draw until I was in it with circa 30€ with basicly no reward. So I actually kept going until I got everything because psychologicaly I thought it would be such a waste if I would stop there with almost nothing and no satysfaction. I knew that it would be a really bad decision and not worth it at all... but they got me 😂
Budgeting in general is an incredible life tip that everyone should follow, even in small ways. I for example, usually buy a single gift card if around 50USD every couple months and use it on for any game purchases. My debit card is not connected to anything as well so it keeps it far away from usage.
Really appreciate this. Me personally, I do the nerdy calculations and run some numbers of in game currencies and then “map” out how long a purchase will benefit me for before doing the transaction. I get teased about it, but rather be safe then splurge and then find a mistake.

I'm 100% free-to-play in Clash Mini, and always in the top 1000. I play for fun, not conquest. I'll use my money for a new tablet, a nice date, a weekend away, or things in real life that add value, rather than digital decorations or artificially purchased gains in a game.
After I realised I was never gonna make money like the “pros” in the clash scene I stopped buying these offers. Context. I’m on the semi pro scene and have made money from tournaments on clash. However supercell have their “pros”. I believe they are always gonna be top of ladder, crl contenders and they are kept there for other people to chase the dream and be like their “hero”Lucasxgamer 😂 people under the top 1k face hard counters in all game modes because they only want a certain amount competing at this level. Fun fact, a shop offer is not gonna make you a pro. A battle pass won’t make you a pro. If your not even at 9k now or struggle to hit ult champ each season your probably never gonna be good at the game and your just wasting your money but giving in to super scammers offers 🤣 ignore the rant like the rant disagree with the rant. I’m high I don’t care. One love ❤️
Not going to lie, clash royale is actually more predatory than some of the more casual gacha games out there. It's more or less on par with highly predatory gacha games.

I use to think they really nerfed the cr pass based on what we got. But then i realised the rewards such as the book at the end of the old pasa waa moved into the seasonal shop. And now we have that shop and the free pass. Where we now can get emotes and books. Yeah the games become kinda bad for people who use to casually buy the pass from time to time. But f2p is not that bad either.
Ash , bought the gold pass two seasons ago thinking I was getting all the shards for evo. Felt absolutely robbed and shafted. Game made me feel stupid for not looking into it.
