The narrator stays the night in a rather sinister old dâk-bungalow in India. During the night he hears the ‘unmistakable’ sound of a game of billiards being played in the non-existent room next door. In the morning the ancient servant tells him that in old times there had been a billiard-room there, and that one night one of the sahibs had fallen dead across the table. But can he trust everything his ears tell him?
It was first published in The Week’s News on 25 February 1888, and then included the same year in Volume 5 of the Indian Railway Library - The Phantom Rickshaw and other Eerie Tales.

I used to have to walk a long dark stretch of road, where a woman had been murdered and buried, after being tortured in the most heinous of ways imaginable, for many hours.
This road was a typical New England seaside country road that was creepy and weird in the typical way of most roads like it.
But it was incredibly dark at night and rather lonely due to the lack of house on it, and the ones that were, weren’t the most hospitable looking.
I didn’t really have to take the road, but when one has to walk so many miles as I did then, usually with some sort of foul weather or with no time or energy to spare, I always contemplated taking the long way when I approached the fork in the road, my circumstances always lead me to choose it, regardless of any trepidation’s that I might have had, due to my full knowledge of what had happened there a fews years prior to my regular travels along it.
Not once while walking that road did I ever get frightened or experience anything spooky or unsettling. There are many roads however that I have traversed, where I was truly frightened and by what, I cannot say other than I was absolutely afraid. But not this road. This road was a shortcut, that although I was reluctant to take it every time I approached it, it was always worth taking. I would quicken my pace when I walked past the exact spot where she was found in her shallow roadside grave, by a man walking his dog, when the animal returned from the edge of the woods with her hand in his muzzle.
But I was just too busy walking and suffering the elements and fatigue to give it much thought, not to mention having too much time to do so, that I really didn’t out of practicality.
If a person’s spirit can still linger after death for whatever reason, hers surely should have.
But nothing. Not even for a second did I perceive her presence, or any other, alive or dead on that ghastly stretch of road.
