Great video - I agree with a lot of what you said.
I think a major reason a lot of brands fail is because they don't have realistic expectations. Most brands actually take a couple seasons, even years to start being profitable. I know so many people that went into starting a brand or shop with romanticised and unrealistic notions on how the game works and had to throw in the towel after 1 or 2 seasons because they didn't blow up or do as well as they imagined they would.
Slow burning is the way to go in my personal opinion, live and maintain. Brands that blow over night hardly ever last but if you have a ethos and build a core following over a couple years and maintain your size and grow organically you may not blow and get rich or mainstream famous but you'll become profitable and have a successful brand which turns over all it's stock season in and season out which is essentially what the end goal is. No point in having a hype brand that's famous but doesn't actually sell like a lot of the recent ones we've seen over the last couple of years.
we're currently in the culture of overnight success and people think if they don't blow up over night they have to stop and do something else, it's a mad ting.

Your 20-20-20 theory is fucking ingenious, the researching and discovering new ideas is the best part of this video because Ive already done this on a smaller scale like 2-2-2 lol! But you find inspiration! My problem is finding a brand name, and by this little epiphany I think Ill have no problem coming up with one soon

This series is amazing stuff! I'm trying to build a brand and I've been focusing on the designs. I kept struggling with figuring out if my first line would be consistent with the 1 design I definitely want to be in it but you helped me realize I gotta focus on the driving force behind the brand (the philosophy) to get inspiration for a consistent line. Thanks for putting this out! Keep up the great work!!

Hello, I just watched your video! It really opened my eyes! I'm almost going to be 30, went to a Fashion Institute straight out of high school, flew to LA to go through with it from Hawaii. I never knew what I wanted to be but wanted to create! That's all, just to create, but my problem was, what do I create?! I went through all these phases. Now that 30 is around the corner and I worked from one job to another just wanting to get money, I realized I gotta start somewhere! Streetwear had been a goal of mine since I moved to LA. LA is a different cat, so many different cultures! That's what really inspired me! Your video really woke me up! I got the name but need that Philosophy! And ima do my homework and try it someone else way other than mine and see where that gets me.

  • @RoDr1G4MeS
    @RoDr1G4MeS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

(This is a development on the research for the 20/20/20 method, reposting it as a single comment so I can maybe help someone who is checking this video).
I'm a designer, I will try to explain to you my method with the 20/20/20 trick.
When I type down the 20 words, I will do a final check and see if its related to the thing I want to create.
I will create the questions and will give them a quick answer in my head (just because it's quick, doesnt mean its short or too simple).
After the answer, I will just google stuff related to the answer I gave. That means images, articles, previous works, movies, cartoons, whatever (it can be LOADS of stuff).
This part is kinda complicated because it can be a fucking massive research. I tend to research things that inspires me to work, that means previous work/artworks done by other people in the area/theme related to what I am creating, but no only that, I think you get the idea.

The research will depend on what you are creating, if its a brand you should do a heavy in-depth research, write down stuff (and by writing down i mean literally writing, not typing, helps a lot).
Repeat that for 19 times and you get the questions answers done. You can stop at this part if you want, your probably have enough material to create the base of your brand (brand in this case, this method can be used for creating logos, ads, whatever you need).
I recommend you doing a final check, see if everything is related, if one thing doesn't contradict the other, you can present the 20/20/20 to your SO, your family and a friend (don't really recommend doing this with friends UNLESS it's someone your know for a long time, and even with that, be smart, lots of rats out here).
AND final advice, save everything you did, after you come up with something, and after 2/3/4 weeks check it again, and see if what you have created fits the 20/20/20. If it does you did what it was expected. If it doesn't you should either change what you created or restart the 20/20/20 proccess. (could be more, could be less, you do your time, just don't let it be too soon.)
Hope I could help, wish you the best.

Great videos. My method was different though. We haven’t launched yet as we are not rushing the planning stages or the build up etc but we basically looked at who our target market was, what the individual within that niche is generally going to be like etc and then defined our message from that.
We had the benefit of being members of that niche ourselves so we know the kind of people we are targeting and from that we knew what these people were all about, what their lifestyle generally is like, their attitudes, what makes them tick etc. By using our target market in this way we were able to define our philosophy, to come out with a voice that would communicate with the people within that niche.
Still though, loved this video for the importance it places upon a brand needing a philosophy, after all how can someone expect potential customers to know what the brand is all about or who it’s for and then get on board and part with their money if they (brand owner) doesn’t know themselves.
I tell everyone the same thing, know your target market and you will know what they are expecting from your brand, what they will or will not like etc and you will also know how to communicate with them.

Damn. 2 years late watching this video.. But the 20x20x20 was insanely helpful. I had a philosophy and deep meaning for my brand but I took it upon myself to try the exercise and I found there was so much more i wanted to convey. Really broke down the specifics.

Let’s me know I’m on the right track. Because wanting to start the clothing line, came from the philosophy(or KiiLosophy🙂) first 🙃

I already have the philosophy of my brand, but I want to try the 20-20-20 idea because I feel like it'll help me double down on my ideas.

Awesome video!!!!!!!!! I learned a lot. at the beginning stages of trying to find a great designer to design my logo for my street wear clothing line. What are some tips you can share for as looking for a designer and them actually being affordable. because I dont want a designer to just design my logo with just plain words or a boring template.
