EPIC FAIL!! 450 Bushmaster Deer Season XP 250gr Ballistics Gel Ammo Test

  • Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the 450 Bushmaster Winchester Deer Season XP 250 grain fired from a Ruger American Ranch chambered in 450 Bushmaster with a 16 inch barrel.
    Checkout my leather gear handmade by me, just for you here: www.masonleather.com/store/c1...
    All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
    I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
    While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
    With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
    For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
    Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
    Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
    I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
    My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
    The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
    All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

    I live in a state that requires straight wall cartridges on public land in deer season. After watching all of your reviews I'm thankful to have stayed withy lever .44 Magnum and not spent the money on the new whiz-bang cartridges.

      44 mag., with good ammo, is no slouch.
      "Standard" bullets have worked quite well long before this magic pointy tip stuff was released.
      Good luck in the field.

    Thanks for posting this these results. It's obvious that this product wasn't really ready for market. The 450BM was designed to fly 2200fps out of a 16" AR barrel, so any round that can't do that out of a 16" bolt gun is underperforming. Which doesn't help to explain the horrible and inconsistent results once the bullets hit a target. These aren't fit for use beyond punching paper.
    I've had good results with the Hornady 250gr FTX factory loads in 16" guns. If you push the 250gr FTX much faster, like with a 25" CVA barrel, then the bullet performance starts to fade. There are all copper loads available that are better suited for the faster speeds. It'd be cool to see you test the 450 Bushmaster HV loads from Bear Creek Ballistics out of your 16" barrel.

    I won one of those Ruger's in a raffle my county high-school held (bought 2 tickets, so I got the rifle for $50). I'm going to be using Federal Power-Shok 300 grain jhp's.

    I have only tried Deer Season XP, in the copper version of 350 Legend. I hammered the deer I shot with it, but with where I placed the bullet, I might have gotten the same result with fmj. The interesting thing to me was that finding the tiny entry wound was almost impossible to see, until the skin came off. The exit wound was about 1/2 -4/4 inch, so I think it expanded some. As far as coppers go in 350 Legend, I will be trying those big hollows from Barnes on the next deer(if I am not hunting with one of my other firearms 😉).
    Keep cranking them out, and I'll keep watching.🤩

    Now I know why I was not impressed with this load. I mostly used the 250 grain SST’s with mine. Everything has died with one shot. Almost always had pass thru and good blood trails if you would need on. I have had jacket separation but always killed what it hit.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      SST’s seem to perform pretty good and consistent for what they’re designed/marketed for

  • @benson8686
    @benson8686 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Honestly, for the caliber of the bullet and the penetration they achieved, they all would have been very effective. Even with the disqponting expansion I really don't think it matters in terms of the practical effect it would have on game.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It would still certainly do the job, the issue is how poorly it compares to other 450B loads, they’ll do the job too, much better and with more margin for error

    I have the same Ruger American .450BM , mine has an 18” barrel though .
    I have it sighted in with Hornady 250grain FTX at the advertised 2,200 fps , and it shoots clover leaf groups ☘️ super accurate !
    I have not killed any game with it yet and so I’m not sure how well it performs . But I’d like to see you shoot some gelatin with the Hornady loads and see how it compares .
    Want me to send you some ammo to test ?

  • @PassivePortfolios
    @PassivePortfolios หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The 450 BM failed in more ways than one - my relatives in Ohio (a straight wall state) tell me its popularity fell dramioatically after the 350 Legend came out.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I didn’t think I was going to like the 350, but after having used it I really like it a lot. It really punches above its class, tends to be surprisingly accurate and has very little recoil… I can absolutely believe that it’s outshining the 450 in actual use.

    • @El_Peto
      @El_Peto 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah that 3.50 a round for the 450 kinda kills it
      That 350 is about like a double charged 357 magnum and doesnt cost all that much

    • @PassivePortfolios
      @PassivePortfolios 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@El_Peto the 350 Legend was inspired by the 357 Maximum, which is a lengthened 357 mag. It was considered the ideal deer round for the straight wall states and the industry followed through with the creation of the 350 Legend, which became wildly popular. It's also popular in Eastern states where ranges are short.

    That isn't reassuring. I think this is what a local wally world has marked down to $28 a box.
    Now on the plus side. I take whitetail with a .451 dia. Cast SWC, saboted into a 50 cal muzzleloader.
    So those Winchesters will do the deed. But at the price of 450 Bushy. I think I'll stay with my cast options lol

    You had 2 fails and one good one with that group, These XPs aren’t made for deep penetration, There made too blow up on contact,Place a bone or something in front of your gel test make it more life like, Copper ammo for me, But I have used this ammo all one shot kills, The same with Hornady ELD x blow up on contact, I’ve watched some of your videos, Buy some rifles with 24 inch barrels get better results higher velocity’s.

    • @masonleather
      @masonleather  หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. They’re absolutely not marketed to blow up on contact and neither are ELD-X’s.
      2. Placing a bone in front would introduce a variable to an objective evaluation, and the only way it would have any credence is if it were extremely fresh. Dead bone does not replicate living bone in the least, stockpiling a bunch of fresh bone is completely infeasible.
      3. Hardly any current production rifles in non-magnum calibers have 24” barrels.
