Worst day of my life was when my wife could tell guitars apart....started asking what things were at gigs, then one day we saw a busker at about 30 yards and said he was playing a Taylor! That was the last day I could buy anything I liked on eBay and say I’d had it for ages.....but she’d buy me a PRS because she likes the birds! 🙂

IMHO, PRS has the most upper mids, the Les Paul is the most balanced, the Strat is the thinnest and possibly the most articulate-sounding . I'm not saying that one is better than the other, but the Les Paul wins in a blindfold test, in my book. PRS plays awesome, and strats are very versatile however. Nice comparison!

I'll put my USA Tremonti, with a Tremelo up against Any Les Paul, including their Custom. It's basically a Hot Rodded Les Paul with time times the quality and quality control. Gibson is too expensive, highly overrated, and the quality control is hit or miss, always being very inconsistent. When people pay that much money, THEY ARE ENTITLED TO A PERFECT INSTRUMENT. HONESTLY, NO MATTER HOW INEXPENSIVE THE GUITAR IS, THE CUSTOMER DESERVES A PERFECT INSTRUMENT. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO EXCUSES. I'VE WANTED AN SG FOREVER. I'M TOO NERVOUS TO TAKE THAT FINANCIAL RISK.

I have two PRS guitars, a CE-24 vintage sunburst, and a Trampas Green Tremonti. The CE-24 is the guitar that got me addicted to PRS, since I always wondered what all of the hype was about. Once, I bought it, I then realized, and became a believer. One day, when I can afford it, which will be a while, since I'm not rich, and I'm living on Disability, (currently paying on a Friedman Rig debt), I want to get a USA Prs SC McCarty 594. I've owned and loved multiples of each, and I'll agree with Garrett. There is a certain character to the midrange of LP's that is unmistakeable, regardless of weight, sustain, pickups or other factors. There are some (Marsden's '59 Beast comes to mind) that seem to have *more* of that character, and other makers LP'ish guitars should (in theory) sound like a LP, but usually don't. Must be why people buy LP's, warts and all...

I can't speak for the newer PRS's, but my first generation CE did have it's own unique voice. It could go from a sweet clean tone to a flat out skin peeling roar. plus it had the smoothest feel to the action. The fit and finish was flawless. A little story, I was playing in a band in northern Michigan. At this time almost nobody had seen a PRS outside of magazine ads. I told the drummer, "I can show you every guitarist here and I don't even have to even talk to anybody." When he asked how I said, "just watch." I opened my case, pulled out my guitar and two guys sitting at the bar said, "that's a PRS." I said to my drummer, "those guys are guitar players."

It’s just strings and wood. I have a cheap Squire SE with a pine agathis body and a chubby neck. Freaking neck wasn’t straight in the pocket and after several attempts to straighten it out. I finally worked up the courage to take it out completely, only to find someone went chisel happy to angle the neck and it’s a loose fit. Well I struggled with tightening order of the screws until I finally trued it dead nuts and clamped it down tight and it is totally stable now! The result was the acoustic loudness doubled and it screams now - and it wasn’t no slouch to begin with!! So you can get great guitars for dirt cheap, the only other difference will be pickups or tuning pegs and other hardware if you need better tuning stability if you gig a lot

T.S. Jarosz I kind of use my PRS as my go to as well. Overall, though, if you played 10 Les Paul's and 10 PRS MCcarty's, etc., allowing $3000 as the price point, I think one of the Les Paul's would win. However, as you went thru the Gibson's, IMO you would find quite a few duds with quality
control issues, tuning problems and generally a sense of overcharging because of the Gibson name.I think most PRS guitars are a much better value than Gibsons, although nowadays PRS has joined Gibson in the guitar as investment strategy. I think PRS, their best, are unique but not as
unique as Gibson. I have two Gibson's, a Les Paul from 71' and a 2001 ES-446. I must tell you, people have commented very favorably on my 2
PRS USA guitars. But the Gibson's , many people have offered to buy them for much more than any ebay or reverb listing. These are magical guitars. But you must try out many, as Gibson's vary enormously in sound, craftsmanship, and playability. PRS has much better quality control and overall versatility, but a great Gibson can have much versatility as well, but you gotta sweat a bit........

Absolutely, and in the $1000-$2000 range, PRS is usually a better guitar than same price Gibson's..But if you have the patience, you can probably find a really good Les Paul in that range. In that range PRS guitars are usually more versatile than Gibsons, but again patience will probably lead you
to an excellent LP. Mainly, let's say 15-20 yrs ago, PRS pickups were pretty good but simply not a match for a happening LP. PRS has come a long way, and certainly now they are gaining on Gibson's for pickup character.

@@johnsmits2494 When I bought my PRS, my intention was to buy a Les Paul. My dream guitar from my early teens in the early 80's was a silverburst Les Paul. I couldn't afford it. Flash forward to 20 years ago and I found a used one in a music shop in Chicago. I figured what the fuck, I've got a decent job now, I'll treat myself. I was fooling around with it when I noticed the PRS hanging on the wall behind it, brand spanking new with an amazing quilted finish. I grabbed it off the wall and played it. The body was slimmer and more comfortable, the pick-ups were hotter, the neck was faster and it held it's tune even when I popped in the trem. For the same money as that used LP, I could get a brand new PRS with a trem, locking tuners and all the case candy. So that's what I did. Don't get me wrong, I still dig LP's, but I prefer the PRS for price, versatility and finish.

Yeah, my dream as well, and my first real electric was a 71' Les Paul Standard. I didn't have a car at the time, so my selection was limited. The seller had routed out the middle for a Dimarzio PAF, and there was a coil tap for the bridge.$500 with OHSC, sounded great, but very heavy mahogany, 10 pds.. I have some cheap and some pretty expensive guitars....Old Faithfull, 2001 PRS SE Santana., $500 new with case. Maybe I'm
wrong, but the Korean PRS guitars tend to be better in many ways than the Indo's. Tried many, a little downhill.

I've had a PRS se Akerfedlt. Got rid of it because I hated the neck, but loved the tone. Also have a mid 90s strat I love. Overall I think the PRS has a nice middle ground, not too toppy. In this video though your LP sounded a little meaner with distortion. I'm a big PRS fan though so obviously my choice. Would say to anyone just pick whatever you like the sound and tone of.

The question is whether or not the guitar has the stock pickups, caps, pots etc. If they do then its a fair comparo. If they have been changed then it could be due to better, or just better liked by the listener, pickup selection. BTW, I did like the sound of the PRS, but the LP was a very close second.

Very late to this party, but to me this question is strange. I feel like people say they don’t have an overly distinctive sound. Like the chirping fender or the thick mellow LP or even the high gain esp sound. But I have been able to pull the tone I heard in my head out of my prs standard 24. I always thought I was a fender guy, but learned otherwise.

PRS with coil tap can be such a monster of tone, does yours have that?

It has a tone of its own because it has a more precise, perfect and defined sound than almost all other main brands. Nevertheless, it doesn't have a recognizable timbre of its own, like Gibson, Fender or Gretsch have. This is why, at least to my ears, people only have the perception of an unique "fullness" of sound about it.
It's a very good guitar for players who already have a sound of their own and who don't need the distinctive timbre of a certain brand to build their style upon.

Man, like you, I have some pretty tasty guitars including LP’s, Strats, custom jobs. My absolute favorite guitar of all time is my 20th anniversary PRS McCarty. I think it absolutely has its own voice but it also is the most versatile of all the guitars I have. I I only could play one and had to cover a ton of different tones it’s what I would pick. Not that is does Strat or LP but it’s heavy if you need it, it’s retro if you need, split the coils and it’s got a beautiful single coil spank. The shame is the way some people make the comparisons. He wasn’t making guitars in the 50’s and 60’s so the romance people feel towards some of the other guitars mentioned isn’t there yet. Every single PRS I have ever touched has played amazing, the finish work is top shelf and they all feel like a custom shop product. As reveries well as he’s respected I feel like it isn’t enough lol. I’ve had my. CE 24 for 6 mos now. And it’s got its own sound. And it sounds GOOD. Personally I think it’s better sounding than my les Paul and my strats. Idk what PRS does to those pick ups but they’re creamy and snappy. It’s like a thick delicious ooze of tone that had a top layer of bite. And they articulate so well. This is just my opinion-but it’s educated. I’m actually so nerdy I line them up and try them out one by one and back and forth to hear and feel the differences.

I do think a PRS has its own sound. I have a mahogany LP and a mahogany PRS and both have hardtail bridges and covered bobbin pickups so it's fairly good side by side comparison. The LP sounds about what you would expect it to sound like, especially one that has medium output humbuckers, thick, compressed, lots of pick articulation but not a lot of bloom. The PRS's pickups are a lot hotter than the LP and you can really hear the difference between it and the LP once you're playing with a lot of distortion. The LP's dynamic range is less than the PRS so the bass is less defined and there are less high mids and treble response than the PRS. The PRS's pickups have more bloom and have a vowel like quality to them. That said, I tend to find some of the C22s and C24s sound a bit thin to me and part of that has to do with the exposed bobbin pickups and the tremolo system so as a result, I tend to gravitate towards McCarty models or PRSs that have a wraparound bridge.
