    Have you ever seen static electricity cause a spark of light? What is that spark? What about lightning, the Northern Lights, or the tail of a comet? All of those things and many others - in fact, 99.9% of the universe -- are made of plasma. Michael Murillo gives the full picture on plasma.
    Lesson by Michael Murillo, animation by Tomás Pichardo Espaillat.

    Just a quick warning - there is flashing animation throughout this video (1:34 - 1:45 is particularly extreme, I found). Just wanted to say it in case there are any epilepsy sufferers, possibly skip that section or watch the whole video minimized? I don't know but I just wanted to say something!

      Aditya Khanna That's beacuse everyone on the internet is prone to seizures and every time they see something blink they get scared because seizure even through they don't know jack about seizures because they're not actually epileptic... - ___ -'' But of course they know the best and care for everyone, so they'll shout for an epilepsy warning because why not... #Kappa

      Aditya Khanna It's hard to understand what plasma is with confusing images, if the images were more defined it would be easier to understand and then we could talk about how to use plasma. say, a plasma generator or plasma reactor.

      LordDragox412 Actually I couldnt follow it for shit because of the flashing colors, and it did make give me nausea, also btw I think you should know people can be prone to seizures without even knowing :P

    • @LordDragox412
      @LordDragox412 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SoosUnknown Shh, I've had one seizure in my whole life for no reason, that makes me technically an epileptic, thus I can be expert on the subject, even through I'm not prone to seizures and that one time happened for no reason, or at least not one that's known. Two months spent in hospital wasted, as the doctors were too confused and the tests gave "unsettling" results, but nothing that would point straight out that I'm an epileptic. But that only makes me even more knowledgeable in the subject than those fake people who know all their info because they've read about it somewhere. Yep, I'm a confirmed expert, no doubts about it. Ask me anything! Especially questions about ice cram. I really like ice cream. Because I said ask me anything, not ask me about epilepsy and stuff like that. Yummy yummy ice cream :D #Kappa

    • @GANGSTA2285
      @GANGSTA2285 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a seizure once, from fake drug use is all I can assume and dehydration, and I watched my girlfriend have a seizure, she was also dehydrated, said the test results. so, epilepsy is not the only reason you have seizures. some have micro seizures, you can't even tell it's happening.

    Superfluid
    Bose-Einstein condensate
    Fermionic condensate
    Rydberg molecule
    Quantum Hall state
    Strange matter (yes, it's called that)
    Photonic matter
    Dropleton
    Degenerate matter
    Quark-gluon plasma
    Color-glass condensate
    and a few others...

      trckojr For someone who is not into physics (like me) a 4 min video about a defined (and simple) topic is barely long enough to sit through, make it 8 min and I personally won't even bother. Long story short: This video gets the job done (well... the animation sucks).

    • @subh1
      @subh1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      trckojr I guess we do not encounter most of these in our every-day life on Earth. But plasma we do.

    • @OnyxtheFortuitous

      trckojr I only know of two of these. :/

    • @NewPlanetSchool
      @NewPlanetSchool 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      trckojr Most of the items on your list are ordinary matter under very, _very_ cold conditions - _the opposite extreme_ of the plasma state. For example, superfluids, Bose-Einstein condensates, and Fermi gases (there is technically no such thing as a Fermionic condensate), and such are gases or liquids that are so cold that _quantum phenomena_ dominates their behavior. But, *quark-gluon plasmas (QGPs)* are a great example. In this case, we can think of having a temperature so incredibly high that even the nucleus itself breaks apart _as do the protons and neutrons in it!_. We can create such QGPs at accelerators, such as at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, by smashing nuceli into each other. This is often done with big fat nuclei like gold (Au). Imagine that: free roaming charges made of quarks and gluons, rather than electrons and protons! And, such matter likely _exists_ throughout the universe in the interiors of neutron stars.

    solid - atoms really packed together
    liquid - atoms have some space to move around
    gas - atoms have lots of space to move around
    plasma - atoms themselves are stripped into protons, neutrons, electrons (also causes nuclear fusion)

      nachscratch Very simple:
      1 - Plasma is an ionized gas;
      2 - It has charge, therefore it interact with eletromagnetic forces;
      3 - In some circumstances it emits light. Put it in a grid, and controlling the colors, it can be use for a television.
      4 - plasma is awesome; Megaman's weapon is a plasma gun.

    Just a quick end note on clean unlimited energy without an explanation. How does that work?

    • @NewPlanetSchool
      @NewPlanetSchool 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      bongsgi95 You might have noticed that the *sun* provides an enormous amount of energy, day and night, century after century.... _How?_ The sun is a giant plasma of mostly electrons and protons. So hot are the protons that _despite the fact that they electrically repel each other_ they occasionally slam into each other. At such distances, the electrical force of repulsion is dominated by another force: the _nuclear force_. Those two protons become a helium (He) nucleus, a neutrino, and a photon....with enormous amounts of fusion energy! This is very nice: none of the new particles are particularly bad for us! Compare this to nuclear fission where we end up with tons of radioactive waste. Why do not try this stunt here on Earth? If only we could create such a plasma - _and control it_ - we could have plenty of energy for everyone for an extremely long time, with only He as a byproduct. Given that the oceans are filled with water (protons!), we would have an essentially unlimited of supply of clean energy. It isn't that easy actually, which is why this is still a research area. _Fusion energy is only ten years away, and always will be!_ One of the ways that we can make this easier is to use what is called "heavy water", made of isotopes of H, other than protons, in the form of deuterium (D) and tritium (T), which fuse more easily and still produce waste (He and a neutron) which is still far safer than fission waste.
      Currently, there are two main areas of research into fusion energy. One technique takes advantage of holding the plasma for a really long time in a magnetic bottle to give it enough time for the fusion reactions to take place. The largest device, which is called a "tokamak", is being built right now in Cadarache, France. Another route is to make the plasma for a very short amount of time, but make it super dense (much denser than a solid) so that you get enough reactions during that very short amount of time. This compression can be done with giant lasers, such as at the National Ignition Facility in California.

      Daniel Muriungi Thanks guess the audiences of the two channels don't mix much.

      I think so, but you can make a device that emits arcs or sparks from your finger tips and those arcs are plasma so technically we can shoot a blast just like in dragon ball z but way smaller :). (Sry for the bad English)

      Both are great videos, and the audience should logically mix

      Akshay Dhansoia nah generally more mature audiences go to this channel it would seem. On matpat's I can get 1000 comment likes, on this channel only 2 lol.

    Thank you for this artwork.
    Very interesting way to present this short info.
    I apologise for saying this, but most of the ted-ed shorts has terrible animation part. It's whether squarish, whether silly or whether both of it.
    This on other hand interesting peace of work.
    Little tricky, little bad in terms of epileptic reasons. But good step forward.
    I think, it next work in this line should combine clean presenting {pure colors, not to much of shimmering and color changing} and something of classic hand-drawn animation.
