Austin AkameGaKillfan777 I personally think it’s because it would have made their rise to fame *too* easy. Honestly, I went into the movie not knowing Queen’s history and even with the fabricated issues I still felt that their stardom and fame was practically handed to them. Did they even go through any hardships during their career? Besides clearly Freddy’s sickness and death. I mean I’m glad that they got their lucky breaks but I love to see people go through much adversity and rise victorious out of it.

The big question Bohemian Rhapsody left me with was “How would someone wholly unfamiliar with Queen’s music feel about this movie?”
More importantly, does such a person exist? I genuinely wonder what an unbiased perspective on Bohemian Rhapsody might look like, but we may never know because of how huge and widespread their music is.

    • @alienswillcomeAWC

Maybe not in the U.S. but internationally. But even here there might be kids or even preteens who haven’t heard Queen’s music (or have heard one song or the other but can’t attach the name to it / don’t have as strong a bond with the artist as older generations do). But yeah, that’s an important question.

    • @DrPonk
      @DrPonk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +123

I mean, I guess it was kinda cool to learn about the people, but their conflicts felt hella forced, the romance plot was a giant mess from top to bottom, EVERYTHING happened in a mad rush, and there was also some music here and there (which was also hard to enjoy because of how it was presented). I really only saw this movie for Rami, and boy did he deliver. I definitely could have waited for it to show up on Netflix though, and I don’t think I’ll ever be watching it again.

The thing about Freddie's ex girlfriend is not that problematic because she was a very important person in his life and stayed by his side until he was dead. I do though have an issue with the oversimplification of the characters of the male lovers. One is like "Hello my name is AIDS and I'm bad" and the other "I'm Mr. Rehabilitation & Stable Life". And they pretend like wild party life was draining for him when in fact it was the lifestyle he loved. I assume that this was conservative overcompensation by both the PC machine behind the movie and maybe Queen's other members which wanted to romanticise their real life story.

To be fair, Mary was *extremely* important to Mercury’s life. He literally left her his home and fortune even though he was still in relationship with Jim. While he was living even after he came out he consistently called her the only person in the world he trusted and considered a friend. She wasn’t just some chick he dated until he realized he was gay and then that was that. I agree more time could’ve been spent on the Jim Hutton relationship, but I don’t think the movie was out of line spending so much time on Mary.
And I wasn’t surprised at all that it got nominated. Biopics about famous, well loved, influential people are typical Oscar bait. Your desire for the nominated film to have exceptional editing and storytelling is noble, but not really grounded in reality. Plenty of movies that were unexceptional on that front have been nominated in the past. I liked BoRhap quite a bit.

I generally agree with your opinion but the reason Freddie's relationship with Mary was showcased a lot more was because it was most likely the most important relationship in his life, not romantically but in other aspects. He considered her the one person he could always trust even years after their breakup (he stated that himself in interviews), and she was a beloved friend of his. Their time together also happened to have taken place during Queen's rise to fame, which makes it completely logical that she would be shown much more than Jim Hutton who was also incredibly important to Freddie, but was present for the last years of his life. The movie cut off after 1985, and did not display the 6 years ('85-'91) that he and Freddie were really together, which completely makes sense in terms of the timeline. Trying to make this sound like some sort of homophobic plot hole is just not fair, so feel free to poke at the movie's actual shitty aspects, but this just isn't one of them.

as an avid user of tumblr, i can confirm that after a couple months, a majority of the people who were big fans of bohemian rhapsody stopped being so generous with their praise of it and started to realize how problematic a lot of the portrayals of Freddie's relationships and such were. considering a large part of the fandom was grsm (gender romantic sexual minorities), it got really hard for people to overlook the demonization of Freddie's homosexualism. i think a large part of the reason the movie was so well-accepted was simply because it was Queen and Queen is such a big name that people would have loved almost anything they put out (it also helps that people really like Rami Malek and found the other actors to be hot and Joe Mazzello's willingness to interact with fans on instagram and such). but once the initial sense of awe faded away, people became much more critical of the movie (myself included) because come on, it's 2019, can we stop demonizing gay relationships for the sake of the conservatives who you expect to watch the movie?

Like the comedy was pretty good when it had its jokes like Roger, Brian, and Johns argument which lead to some iconic moments. Rami is overall a fantastic actor and theirs things I like about it. Its one of my favorite movies from 2018 and theirs probably far better but it was something I saw because i like the band. Also i want to add on to the complaint about the "Toxic Relationship" portion, I believe it was showed to show theirs some people who will trap you into a relationship and make you think they love u when really its toxic and abusive. The thing your not really taking into account is that, while critics didn’t really like it, audiences went CRAZY for it. It’s one of the highest grossing films of the year domestically and worldwide. Every person I’ve talked to who’s seen it loves it. It struck just the right nerve with the general populace and they’re supporting it like crazy. Now think about this, what has the academy been struggling with the past few years? Nobody wants to watch the Oscars. Film fans like us will watch no matter what (although I may skip out this year because who the fuck cuts cinematography and editing?), but the public doesn’t care enough to see everything live, in large part because most of the time, nobody has seen any of the nominees. Hell, even the academy usually doesn’t. So what’s a sure fire way to fix that? Nominate something people want to root for. Even if you take out Black Panther and Bo Rhap, the lowest grossing out of the nominees this year is The Favorite, and it’s still made like $40 million. People have actually seen many of the nominees this year, and the hope is that people will tune in to see if their favorite will will. And many people’s favorite (if the $700 million this movie has made is any indication), is Bo Rhap.

So even if this was an attempt to give the general public a feel-up to get them to watch, picking Bohemian Rhapsody still seems like a weird choice.

ColonelJak42 Musical biopics are a common sight at the Oscars, so it make sense for the academy to get behind it. Long ago we lived in the crazy noisy bizarre Negaverse combined into one.
Life was practically peaceful in many parts of the crazy noisy bizarre negaverse.
One fateful day, the Smithy Gang had made a man known as Retep their general.
He proved his power by killing over 1 billion versions of Juggernaut, Doomsday, Darkseid and Thanos.
This turn of events shook the entire world....
With no one, whether they be a hero or villain even willing to challenge the Smithy Gang. They easily took over the Crazy Noisy Bizarre Negaverse.
After Smithy declared himself the ruler of the Crazy Noisy Bizarre Negaverse.
He and the rest of his goons stole all the hentai.
The loss of the hentai drove many to fall into despair. They knew they wouldn't be able to stop the Smithy Gang. This all was to Junko's delight..
    Many years later......
Bill Cipher and Aku started a rebellion due to their hentai and weed being taken away. They were holding it for their friends.
The war against Retep's forces lasted for centuries. Many had perished to fight for the freedom of the crazy noisy bizarre negaverse.
During the final battle something happened. It was the work of...
    Gumball Waterson,
    Izuku Midoriya,
    Atsuko Kagari,
    Ruby Rose,
    Ogilvie Maurice 'Sonic' Hedgehog,
    Bowser Jr.,
    Meatwad,
    Darwin Waterson,

    Zim,
    Ash Ketchum,
    Rowley Jefferson,
    Greg Heffley,

    Stewie Griffin,
    Chris Griffin,

    Nathan Adams,
    Takato Matsuki,
    Guilmon,
    Butters Stotch,
    Ren Amamiya,
    Bart Simpson,
    and Spongebob Squarepants.
They all planned to fuse into an omnipotent being.
The being, able to defeat Retep had struggled though
    However.....
None of them could take into account that there was a reason Smithy was Retep's boss.
They all defused under the idea that they didn't need to be omnipotent to fight Smithy and could easily take him on. They didn't know a technique that Smithy learned would end the war in his favor.
    One called....
    the Asspull.
Smithy proceeded to knockout the warriors. Deeming them unworthy of death he channeled Manbearpig as he prepared the universe ending technique.
After the warriors failed to stop Smithy's asspull. The Crazy Noisy Bizarre Negaverse exploded into many universes resetting everything.
    Now....
The multiverse starts to collapse as various universes merge together.
The reincartions of the warriors will have to team up to survive and fight assholes
How would these characters react if it was true?

Moonlight won just a few years before and typically if the director makes an incredibly well-received movie after winning/getting nominated for Best Picture, it will almost always get a nomination. Here's an argument I want to put forwards regarding the Bryan Singer point. I don't necessarily agree with the following, I'm simply emulating a mindset that I believe might have some validity in this situation:
Even if you take the director's credit away from the movie, that doesn't change the fact that the movie exists and the majority of the movie was directed by Singer. On that front, lavishing the movie with awards is still "rewarding" a known pedophile for their work, even if nobody wishes to acknowledge that the movie was 90% directed by them. I'd even argue that the lack of transparency of *who* directed the movie might be worse off for the industry as a whole if we as consumers can't look into who directed what because the credits have been plastered over with replacement names to protect the "integrity" of Hollywood.
If any of you feel so strongly about not rewarding Bryan Singer's effort because he is a bad person, why not just pull the movie in-general? If it was 90% shot and directed by Singer, then it is Singer's work, and should not be rewarded in the Oscars, or even rewarded by having a release at all. It should be canned as a message to all pedophiles in the industry that they will not only be ousted from Hollywood, but they will not be able to hide behind the movies that they push out into theaters to soak up credit and fame from people who don't know or do not care about the nature of their crimes.
Do you agree with the above statement? If not, what arguments to do you have in separating the work of the artist from the artist themselves?

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I 100 percent agree with your first paragraph. To deny someone credit just because they are a terrible person, in my mind, is plagiarism. You do not get to commit crimes scott-free just because it is at the expense of a criminal or alleged criminal. If that was the case then the world would be in chaos with the "eye for an eye" mentality taken far too strictly.

The thing I found strangest was that the film made a big thing about the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” not being too long at 6 minutes, and how radio stations should’ve been willing to play it.
But then the film itself wasn’t even willing to play the entire song, just lots of snap clips of it. It felt like the filmmakers were criticising the producer guy for something which they were also doing with their own film.

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The film has a story to tell. If it played all the songs in it from beginning to end, the movie would have about 3 lines of dialogue. That situation can hardly be equated to that of playing a song on the radio.

I disagree with the idea that a movie should not get awards just because one of the creators did some bad things. The award is for the quality of the movie, not quality of the people making the movie. I like to keep those seperate.
For example if someone wrote an amazing book, but then it turned out he was a mass murderer, he should still get all the awards he deserves (because the book is really good) and then get sent to jail forever (because murder is bad).
Also I agree that this movie is mediocre.

    • @alienswillcomeAWC
      @alienswillcomeAWC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

But there are awards like best picture that while they are supposed to celebrate the film as a whole, still automatically reward the director. Also you didn’t pick a very good example because books and films are very different art forms and their industries are different as well. There’s one person behind the making of a book, and very little money, compared to a movie. It’s much easier to put authors away, especially if they don’t have a cult-like following (only a small number of authors have cult-like status and big bank accounts). Whereas Hollywood has way fewer directors than there are authors, but these directors have a lot of money and manpower behind their products. With this power and lack of accountability comes a tendency to abuse it. These directors have a ton of connections that keep them from getting put away, and that’s an issue that the industry as a whole needs to address, including these award shows. A best picture win is another pat on the back for these awful people, another chance for THEM to speak over the people they abused. So I understand what you’re trying to say, and while I think that actors and people behind the camera should get awards for their work, that can be done in separate categories. A best picture win is a win for the director.

Unfortunately the Oscars are much more about what message they're promoting with the films that win awards. The Academy just isn't going to promote a film with Bryan Singer's name strongly attached to it after the recent news that has come out.

"What're those" was a 2014 thing, and it was dead by 2015. There was no one caught dead saying it in 2016, so no, indefensible.
