The Hungarian Parliament Building (Hungarian: Országház) is the seat of the Hungarian National Assembly (Magyar Országyűlés), one of the oldest legislative buildings in Europe, a notable Hungarian landmark and a popular tourist destination in Budapest. It is located in Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth Lajos tér in Hungarian), on the left bank of the Danube. The Parliament of Budapest is currently the largest building in Hungary.
The building was designed by the renowned architect Imre Steindl between 1885-1904, in the Neo-Gothic style. The first meeting of the Hungarian government took place even before the completion of the construction, on June 8, 1896, on the occasion of the one-thousandth anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state.
    Historic
Budapest was created by the union of 3 cities in 1873. Seven years later, the National Assembly decided to build a new representative Parliament building to express the sovereignty of the nation. For this purpose, a public competition was organized which was won by the architect Imre Steindl (1839-1902); the plans of the other two competitors were later made for the buildings of the Ethnographic Museum and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, both located opposite the Parliament building. The construction of the Parliament began in 1885, the building was inaugurated in 1896 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state, and was completed in 1904. (The architect of the building went blind before its completion.).
About a thousand people were involved in the construction of the building, 40 million bricks, half a million disc-type precious stones and 40 kg of gold were used. After World War II, the Diet of Hungary was a unicameral parliament, and today the government uses only a small part of the building. During the communist regime a red star was placed perched atop the dome, which was removed in 1990. Mátyás Szűrös declared the Republic of Hungary from the balcony overlooking Kossuth Lajos Square on 23 October 1989.
Similar to the Palace of Westminster, the Parliament building is neo-Gothic; it has a symmetrical facade and a central dome. Also, the interior of the parliament is symmetrical and thus has absolutely two rooms, one of which is used for political purposes and the other for guided tours. The building is 268 meters long and 123 meters wide. Its interior includes 10 courtyards, 13 passenger and freight elevators, 27 entrances (gates), 29 internal staircases and 691 rooms (including more than 200 offices). With its height of 96 meters, the Parliament is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest, along with St. Stephen's Basilica. The number 96 refers to the founding of the Kingdom of Hungary in 896 and the millennium anniversary of this event in 1896.
The main facade is on the bank of the Danube, but the official main entrance is from the square in front of the building. Inside and outside the building are 242 wall sculptures. On the facade are statues of Hungarian rulers, Transylvanian rulers, as well as famous military leaders. Above the windows are the coats of arms of the kings and dukes. The main entrance is on the stairs located on the east side, bordered by two lions.
When entering the Parliament, visitors can walk up to the grand ornate staircase, see the frescoes on the ceiling and the bust of the architect Imre Steindl in a niche in the wall. Other statues are those of Árpád, Ștefan and Iancu de Hunedoara.
One of the most famous parts of the building is the hexadecagonal central hall, with huge adjacent rooms: the Lower House (today the National Assembly meets here in sessions) and the Upper House (until 1945). The crown of Saint Stephen, which is also represented in the coat of arms of Hungary.
