    Commercial grower here. The base inflation of seeds is biggest hurdle I've had. 20-25% increase to seed prices is significant when ordering 100k seeds plus. And they indeed have added weight and gas surcharges to shipping. Not to mention we expect DAYS in shipping delays even if paying more for faster shipping. Really messed up succession plantings when demand has been high and many varieties were also backordered.

    With my balcony hydroponics system, I was able to stay home without any grocery deliveries for two weeks when both my husband and myself got Covid. At the same time, cases were surging where we live and almost all delivery services were delayed. We stocked our pantry, fridge and freezer and medicine cabinet well beforehand. We just had to rest and focus on getting well. We could comfortably stay at home for months if we wanted to.

    This guy is inspiring!
    I've been gardening indoors since about 1990, but back then I was growing _left-handed cigarettes,_ and doing it in potting mix. I changed my ways long ago, and I'm loving growing food in hydroponics! Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, many leafy greens, herbs, etc.
    I've got (4) gardens setup now, and have a 4 x 4 grow tent assembled in which I'll put my 8-bucket DWC system, and I'm starting (12) Kratky systems for succession growing of leafy greens. I'm not a strict vegetarian, but mostly so. I figure by the time I get everything up and running I should be able to grow the majority of my food. There's not a lot that's more rewarding than that. Especially if lettuce ever goes to $12 here!!

    great video Hoocho, as always! the later part of the video has me really keen on a high level discussion about which systems to use when and why, if you're up for it. not just for lettuce obviously but rather which is best for what. it makes sense that taller plants with heavier fruit probably need a method with better root support for example, but the different pros and cons of the many options among those would be really interesting, summed up in a basic overview video, now that you've experimented with so many different techniques.
    as you say, some need power, some more space, others like drain to waste way be less efficient with water and nutrients, others wont work for some plants because space and support for roots is limited.
    you know and have tried so much, it'd be really awesome to hear your thoughts on which technique to choose when, your likes/dislikes, etc.!
    much love!

    • @SeamusHarper1234
      @SeamusHarper1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      TL:DR use kratky style systems and deviate if you can't get any further with it or struggle with a particular crop.
      Drain to waste is used by large greenhouses, because they can monitor their systems in a way that they drain next to nothing. This requires constant monitoring of the conditions, e.g. temperature, humidity, etc.
      For a beginner, I'd say: Kratkys everything. Use a float valve with a larger reservoir to refill, if you grow larger / fruiting plants. Dr. Kratky does this for beans, tomatoes, etc.
      If you have gathered experience, you can try other systems. Bato buckets are pretty foolproof for larger plants, same goes for ebb and flow for any kind of plant.
      The NFT systems are specialized for leafy greens and many people on the hydroponics reddit seem to struggle with it. If you can dial it in correctly, it can yield a bit more per given space.

    • @DMonZ1988

      @@SeamusHarper1234 awesome, thank you very much for the helpful reply. the krathy technique definitely seems very easy and accessible and its interesting to hear you recommend it for more than quick growing basic crops. i imagined it might reach its limits fairly quickly for anything with larger root systms or anything with a longer growing period where root rot might become an problem over time.
      definitely where i'll start and i'll see how far i get as you suggest!

    here in Quebec, Canada our iceberg lettuce is not 12$. but in a month it went from 1,99$ to 3,99$ for us its crazy expensive, especially for the cheapest lettuce on the market (in our country).

    • @capitalinventor4823
      @capitalinventor4823 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      $3.99 is not crazy expensive for iceberg lettuce in Canada in the off season. The fact that we are able to get it for $1.99 at all during the off season is a wonder, considering that at the least it has travelled from the USA. People need to stop expecting to have the same selection of produce, at least at the in-season prices, all year round. That and expecting every vegetable and fruit to be perfect causes significant CO2 emissions, food loss, and harms farmers.

    People must be crazy to pay that price when they could grow it for just a few pennies! Do Australians understand when they are taken to the "cleaners." Fertilizers got more expensive here in the USA too, but nothing like you describe...you're being ripped off! Surely ppl can grow lettuce in other areas than Queensland? If not, you've got caught in infrastructure issues and problems Australians created....they need to wake up, growing lettuce is so simple. Is a country like yours not capable of building giant hydroponic facilities to grow lettuce, tomatoes and sofort...little countries all around the world have them, but Australia doesn't? Our climate in Minnesota is arctic 7 months of the year, and even we have them and also grow them indoors in our homes. Get with it for g😅😮😅oodness sake!

    The main reason I started getting small hydroponic gardens was to grow leaf lettuce and bok choy and other greens all year despite the weather. I bought a 25 pound package of blendable nutrients, another kilo of all in one MaxiGro, and a liter of Aerogarden kind. I still grow crops outdoors but my seven little gardens are fail proof. I bought grow lights too to try other indoor growing methods.

    I’ve never been to Australia so I don’t know whether you have as many dandelions as we have in America, but they make a pretty good (in some ways, better) alternative to lettuce. The trick is to strip the fleshy portion of the leaves from the stem/midrib to remove a lot of the bitter latex if eating the leaves raw. My preferred way of eating dandelions is boiled with linguine/spaghetti and seasoned with olive oil, salt, garlic, pepper, and either citrus juice or balsamic vinegar. It’s really delicious to me, though it may still be too bitter for some people’s taste buds.

    Fertilizer cost has risen for sure; however power cost has risen a LOT more. In Germany you pay 40 cent per kWh. So a 100W LED grow light which is running 16h per day will cost approx. 19 Euro per Month. And such a grow light is only sufficient for a small space where you can grow 5 to 10 lettuces or so. If you want more growing space you will need more and bigger grow lights, which will multiply the calculation.

    • @mornkel2125
      @mornkel2125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was talking about LED grow lights (i edited my post to make it clearer). The problems with Germany’s power cost apply to all indoor gardening where you need grow lights, hydroponic or soil gardening doesn’t matter. But i expect vegetable prices to skyrocket during the next months, so power cost might then be lower than grocery prices, we will see.

    • @marneybanana1985
      @marneybanana1985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mornkel2125 Actually most decent LED grow lights these days have dimmer knobs on them, or even remotes to set the light strength from 15% - 100%, So when seedlings are small, you run the light on 20-30% (20-30W) and as they get bigger you turn up the power. That saves alot more money than you think....You can also run the lights on for 14 hrs or even 12 hrs with just as good results (for lettuce anyways) and if you throw in some high value plants like strawberrys then instead of $2-4 a punnet, they are around 40-50 cents. Capsicums are another good one, so if you have all 3, it becomes well worth it if its winter and you want summer fruits and veggies.

      @mornkel2125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I baited and they seemed to enjoy the feed so I got out the fox trap and sitting it in the open with a bit of peanut butter and jam on the plate, I nailed three after killing one with bait. After seeing some scats the other day, I have put more bait out and blocked up some holes. My glasshouse setup is only 4 x 2 metres and sitting on the ground so susceptible to outside attack. I think in future I will get another couple of fox traps and do a bit of free feeding outside and put some mice mesh on the floor.
