Further to my previous comments, we have now had this on our horse for a week and he no longer cribs. Seriously guys this is fantastic and to those that say it doesn't work, you must be fitting it incorrectly. We've tried different collars and methods and this is the only thing that actually works. Soooo happy
I apologize in advance for any spelling mistakes. My native language is German, not English. There is a lot of disinformation or rather lack of real information in this video about cribbing/windsucking. It starts with the reasons for cribbing, you only meantioned one - "boredoom". That`s zu 90% incorrect. Almost every horse starts cribbing because of stomach and/or gut problems, which are caused by: - stress due to training/sporting events - wheaning as a foal - not enough hay (in the wild horses graze up to 18 hours a day, because their stomachs produce acid 24/7) - bad quality hay - feeding the wrong things (too much grain, sweet feed, ...) - stress with other horses - standing in a small box all day (stress, because their natural needs aren`t met: exercise, social contact, grazing, ...) - stress through pain caused by injury or illness.... - ... In the end, it comes down to horses developing stomach problems, mostly ulcers, through bodily or psychological stress. They start cribbing to stimulate the production of saliva, which they then swallow to dilute their stomach acid. The acid and the saliva basically counteract each other. In the beginning it`s purely a bodily dependence, but it turns into a psychological dependence/addiction, because cribbing also causes the brain to release Dopamin. So, in the end, almost every horse cribs because it has PAIN, or had PAIN at some point in time!!! They may need cribbing as a bodily or mental relief!!! Also, the cribbing usually DOESN`T cause colic or stomach ulcers. It`s the other way round. The stomach ulcers or gut problems cause(d) the cribbing. ---- My horse cribs as well. And yes, I hate it just as much as everybody else. The sound is awful, he is grinding down his teeth and the fence posts. But, at one point in time, he needed cribbing as a relief and now it is an addiction. I would never use an anti-cribbing collar! Ever! Instead of treating what causes/d the cribbing in the first place, you are just treating the symptoms and steal a horse that one little bit of bodily or mental relief it has. I can`t tell others NOT TO USE an anti-cribbing collar. And I won`t. But I hope some of you might at least consider to look deeper into this topic and help your horse in other ways too, for example changing/improving their living arrangement, changing their feed, feeding more hay, check and treat for stomach ulcers, ...
Very well put, thank you.. now I'm not opposed to trying to change my horses behavior. But I am new to horses. 2 were left on my property when I bought it. I'm ok with it. I have kept them alive and healthy the last 2 years. I'm learning as I go. From my understanding the previous owner left both in stalls 24/7 unless someone was coming over or he trail rode them. I myself very rarely put them in a stall. And my gelding always cribs. I was told to get the collar. I just put it on today, fed them and he's not cribbing. So for now it's a win.
all very well showing it on a plastic horse. Why not attach it to a windsucker and video how effective it is (or isn't). Frankly, if I owned a windsucker, I'd go for the Barclay's collar . There are loads of videos showing how effective it is. I don't buy any miracle cure unless I can actually see with my own eyes that it works. I suspect there is no video with a live horse, because the product doesn't actually work in practice.
Bought it used it and it worked, but it also screwed up my geldings forelock because I had to make it TIGHT or it wouldnt work. The top band wears your horses forelock off and then your horse looks funky for MONTHS. Tossed mine. NOT HAPPY EITHER.
Late reply, but for my horse I taught him it is not acceptable behavior, if he bites the rail,he had to go to work ,run, trot or cantor. His choice, loose air or dont crib, He chose dont crib.
Cribbing is a symptome of stomach and intenstine problems, not a cause.. Putting a collar around the neck does not cure the horse, but gives more discomfort.

Our pony cribs and he just does it on the post tops when he's turned out
It works great! Cribbing also damages the lungs.
So how does it work? How does it prevent cribbing?
how do you stop cribbing?

This is very well written/said.
Thanks for elaborating!

Why is "turn out" not always an option????

Dunno what your experience is but you don't seem to know much yourself
