    Titanic and Britannic both would've been proud of Olympic. Their oldest sister, the first of the 3, had the most successful career, and Olympic stayed strong for her sisters. Titanic and Britannic may have sunk, but they were always with her till the end.
    Now all 3 sisters are together in ocean liner heaven, where they will be at peace and will always be together until the end of time.

    I couldn't agree more with Andrew. Ocean liners are built with life expectancy of 25-30 years of use. Those that know about the Olympic class trio, (Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic), know that out of all three, Olympic was the only ship to live long enough to make her appointment with the scrap yard. Although my heart wishes that someone would have stepped in and saved her as a floating hotel, (like Queen Mary), my head knows that it would've been extremely difficult for someone to actually pull it off. Thank you for the video.

    "Old Reliable", the pride of the White Star Line, and the only one of her class not to sink.
    With the Queen Mary, the second Mauretania, and the Queen Elizabeth on the way, she was surplus to Cunard White Star's requirements, and she was an aging ship at the time.
    There's still plenty of her fittings all over the place, so she's not completely dead.

    "Now her days are done". Liners were built with the understanding they would last only so long. In "R.M.S. Olympic--the Old Reliable" by Simon Mills one can read about the structural problems in her later years. Better the Olympic be scrapped and provide many jobs than something terrible happen at sea resulting in injury and death. With living beings, human or otherwise, or with liners, the time comes for the ending.

    What remarkability if they had brought her out of the water, and laid her at full height in a memorial esk massive courtyard surrounded by elegant flowers, ornamentation, and walking passthroughs. I think it would be wonderful if they painted her every decade, something new and quite smart.
    I've always wanted to see such an elegantly designed liner, be decked in the finest colors. Dark pine green, with soft art deco pink funnel color, and a blackberry blue on the hull line. (It sounds quite a strange color palette I can imagine, but it is remarkable together). I also want to see an autumn brown, with light green funnels, and spring yellow hull lining and funnel linings at the top. Funny thing, funnels back in the edwardian time had an elegant two tone, whereas in the later years, it became an almost utilitarian one tone. And you'll have to trust me on those color palettes no wonder how eccentric they sound.

    Huh, didn't know they refitted her before she went, although the aging part referred to her interior styling, not her machinery, although her reciprocating powerplant was looking slow and expensive compared to the turbine liners.
    Remember, Olympic was 1900's era ship, and in the art deco era, she probably was looking a bit dated.
    Me, I love every bit of her, and I'm sad she didn't get to last a bit longer.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Of course, wouldn't be the first time the powers that be in things threw away something that worked perfectly well.
    Take steam locomotives, many brand new and practically new ones went to the breakers when the diesels took over, but that's another kettle of fish.

  • @ChrisCooper312
    @ChrisCooper312 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As nice as it would have been to see her preserved, it's important to remember that WW2 was just around the corner, and that would have given her a very uncertain future. The firmest preservation plan was for her to become a floating hotel in the South of France. Then she's either captured by the Germans, and then destroyed by the allies, or destroyed by the allies so she doesn't get into enemy hands (especially if she was still in working order). Alternatively she's moored up in the UK and either bombed (docks were massive targets) or pressed into service, or at best stripped for useful parts for the war effort. If by some miracle she's still around in 1945, she's then in a world rebuilding from a massive war. Look at Aquitainia, the one that did survive both wars.
    You can't save everything. It sounds harsh, but if you really want to keep Olympics legacy alive, visit and support Queen Mary, SS United States (that's seriously under threat), SS Rotterdam, The White Swan at Anwick (where her first class lounge is). Olympic may be gone, but instead of being sad for that, make sure that the liners we still have, and the parts of her still around, live on.

      Cunard White Star (they were merged) also scrapped Mauritania at the same time. They sold Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and QE2. It's just lucky that buyers were found for those 3 for future use (although Elizabeth didn't work out sadly). When the time comes, Cunard will sell off their current Queens. Likely all will be scrapped (QM2 is massive in comparison to any other preserved ship, her survival will be a long shot). No shipping company has preserved one of their liners. I don't even know of any smaller ships preserved by their original owners.

    The last voyage of the Titanic which was swapped with the damaged Olympic so that JP Morgan; who cancelled his trip at the last minute, collect the insurance money.
    The documentary "Why they sank Titanic" makes a lot of sense.

      The ship at the bottom of the Atlantic has already been confirmed as being the Titanic. The numbers “401”, which was Titanic’s yard number, is etched into the ship and propeller. The switch theory seems compelling, until you actually look at the evidence and use common sense. The name on the side of the ship was part of the hull and couldn’t be switched. Smith and crew would have recognized it right away if it was the Olympic, and no one is going to purposely hit an iceberg and endanger everyone on board. The ship also was insured for less than the actual cost, so they lost money. JP Morgan just got lucky.

    OLYMPIC or TITANIC?... with the TITANIC being over 90% identical, these sister ships have been hard to tell apart even when moored side by side.
    There is substantial evidence to suggest the TITANIC was switched with the OLYMPIC for several major reasons which you can Google... the OLYMPIC was the older ship that had already been in two major accidents at sea before the TITANIC was completed.
    Insurance fraud sanctioned by the British Government was one of the reasons, with Maritime fraud scuttling ships by their owners having a well established history.
    What was once thought as looney Conspiracy Theory is looking more and more like the truth, especially when we know how the history books and mass media have been caught lying to us for centuries!

      The Olympic was damaged and uninsurable. So they sunk it and collected the payoff for the much more valuable Titanic, which sailed on as the Olympic. Simple.
