- Across the U.S., celebrations have been taking place for Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery. The day marks when the last enslaved people learned they were freed in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Alana Wise, a race and identity reporter for NPR, joined CBS News to discuss the holiday.

My dad was born in 1926, my grand parents were actually still slaves in texas after slaves were freed, to take this day to think about how a black man in that time did after they were told to leave a plantation with no money, no car, no clothes, no understanding of what is happening, not knowing how to read, how to live outside of a place u were most likely born in and to see how far my dad got mentally, financially, and emotionally, to me is amazing to appreciate and thank god for the opportunity to appreciate the struggles he put us through as a culture because it made a lot of strong. So this day is everything to me as far as how far we as a culture have come and where we are individually.
