While it’s definitely noisy and chaotic, they aren’t sloppy, every one of them hits every change.. this is what the song sounds like, they’re tight as fuck as a band..
+Peanut13131 Ha, I did check it out. I was trying to say that I don't think he's miming. It looks like he's hitting two 16th notes on the snare with his left hand at 1:03. And watch & listen to the cymbal action at 3:19--it would be easier to play that kind of chaos than to mime it perfectly.
+Peanut13131 that is not true at all. I recorded, engineered and mixed that performance and they were live and LOUD! They performed live in the MTV Studios which were at National Television Studios at the time. There is no way he could have been faking that chaos so perfectly.
+Mari “Slammer” Sundell That's very kind of you to say! Our preproduction and detailed planning keeps us on point, especially in a live-to-air television broadcast like this one. You only have one shot in getting it right, or as close to "right" as you can. ;-)
YES. Thurston and Lee use so many different tunings that it's insane. Their sound is cacophonic, mayhem-ish, and still yet artistic and straight-to-the-point. I could never play the guitar like like they do. And they are brilliant
@@stevenglansberg4448 No, I didn't. The ones I had watched would not change every song. Maybe once in a set or two. Not sure if what you're saying is the norm now but back then it wasn't. Also,. It depends on the genre, I guess. Punks wouldn't bother for example. Do you have other examples?
People talk about Neil Peart and John Bonham (both of whom I love) being the greatest drummers ever, but I reckon only Steve Shelley could keep this band in line!
*EVERYTHING* about this performance is awesome, from Steve Shelley going apeshit on the drums, Kim Gordon ripping up the bass and Thurston and Ranaldo doing things with the guitar only they could do. It's manic from start to finish, and it ALWAYS pumps me up. For some reason, though, my favourite part is at 3:25. Just that moment when Kim rushes to the mic. She's been rocking out so fucking hard that it almost seems like she forgot she had to sing, but its funny how that one step forward to the mic visualized basically how crazy this performance is. Kool Thing as a song is fuckin wild, yet somehow it has its shit together. And this is one of the best performances where shit goes crazy, yet everything fkn sticks.
The actual date for this live performance (broadcast) was July, 29th, 1992 (not 1993) for a live television show called, "Hangin' w/ MTV" which was captured and broadcasted live from the MTV Studios at National Video Center, NYC, NY. I know this bit of information because I recorded, engineered and mixed this live performance video clip! They performed two songs, that day; of course, Kim sang "Kool Thing" and Thurston sang on "100%."

yeah, nice work +Aura-Sonic Mobile. It sounds great! Could you elaborate for a couple sentences on your "certain approach" for the vocals? Was it something like using low board gain off the SM57 and then a healthy dose of dbx 166 compression? :-)
Emily Calabrese hey gorgeous I'm looking for somebody can teach me how to play guitar on a bass and see my music under Christian music I live in Hortense Georgia 110 South give me a call give me
Kim was nearly twice my age during this performance. I would, then and now, do anything to spend a few hours with her. Loved SY back then and I think it was because of how amazing she is.
Kurt Cobain brought me here. He mentioned them as one of his favorite bands and that stuck in my brain for 25 years. Fucking true story. That name; Sonic Youth, stays with you.
It makes me really sad they ended up how they did, looking at the ending. It just makes me wanna curl up and cry and play "Unwind", remember good times.

So sloppy, so grungy, so punky, so alternative, so chaotic .. Spectacular performance!

What many people don't understand is that art does not always have to be nice or smooth or wellness at all.
Hell, just look at the Ramones or Iggy Pop.
