I used the following procedure on my 2005 4Runner and had no problems programming two remotes (this procedure eliminates the additional steps you added of simultaneously pressing the LOCK & UNLOCK buttons 3 times for 1.5 seconds and opening/closing the driver's door immediately thereafter). The procedure I've included is found on multiple websites and worked like a charm the first time. Programming for a 2003 to 2005 Toyota 4 Runner Used the following procedure to add or replace a remote and/or restore remote programming due to system malfunction. Procedure: Sit in the driver's seat with the door closed. Key out of ignition switch Open driver's door (door should remain unlocked with key removed from ignition) Within 5 seconds: Insert and remove the key from the ignition 2x. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door 2x. Insert and remove the key from the ignition 1x. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door 2x. Insert the key into the ignition and close the driver's door. Turn ignition ON and OFF: • Once to program a remote transmitter code whilst retaining the original codes • Twice to program a remote transmitter code whilst erasing the original codes • Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered • Five times to erase all registered codes. Remove key from ignition: System should now lock and unlock vehicle: • Once, twice or five times, depending on which mode has been selected • One to four times, slowly, to indicate number of remote transmitters registered. Within 40 seconds (BUTTON PROCEDURE): Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds Within 3 seconds: Press LOCK button. System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed. Press UNLOCK button. Within 40 seconds: Repeat BUTTON PROCEDURE to program additional remote transmitters. When Finished: Open driver's door to exit programming mode. NOTE: A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed to the vehicle’s keyless system.
See above if you are having issues! I bought two new remotes and they wouldn't pair. Those instructions work correctly. If you are like me and do not have any remotes, you have to rewrite the code in order for the new ones to work. This involves cycling the key ON >> OFF twice, instead of once - as stated above.
1) Open and unlock driver side door. 2) Put key in and out 2 times. 3) Close and open door 2 times. 4) Put key in and out 1 time. 5) Close and open door 2 times. 6) Put key in. 7) Close the door. 8) Switch key on and off. 9) Remove key. 10) Doors will lock and enter programming mode. 11) Push and hold lock/unlock button for 1 and half seconds. 12) Push lock button for 1 second. 13) Do this 3 more times. 14) Open driver side door and close. 15) Push and hold lock/unlock buttons on remote for 2 seconds. 16) Release buttons and open the door. 17) Close the door and check if it works.
Make sure the door chime works or it won't program. Also you don't have to open and close the door you just need to press the chime button on the side pillar.
Fantastic demonstration and information! I had the exact same issue with my 2006 4Runner even thought I tried the instructions supplied. This worked the very first time with a keyless remote from Amazon as well. Thank you very much for this helpful video.

Ok this was pissing me off the first 10 times I attempted with no success but finally after the 11th attempt it work!Woooohoooo Watch every specific move this guy does,especially when the car is ready for programming .hit lock/unlock simultaneously and then lock button .this sequence three times. Finally success and this video saved me $180.00 from my Toyota dealership....FINAL VERDICT: 90% Happy Only Setback is when I push the roll rear window down button my horn goes into panic mode. But I can live with using key on rear window
Worked on 2006 4Runner SR5 RWD. But for the step of pushing and holding the LOCK and UNLOCK button for 1.5 seconds, then push the Lock button, the car locks then unlocks. I only did this one time. After I did it once I opened and closed the door. Pushed the lock button, it locked. Pushed and hold the rear window button, it rolled down. If it didn''t work, I was going to do it 3 times like in your video. Thanks for the upload

I have no idea if it will hinder programming. I am not an expert at this programming, I kinda just figured it out by trial and error and this is what worked.
confusing. too much talking and confusing people while you are pressing unlock-lock. you keep saying "hold lock button" .. that's, of course, wrong. it's both buttons and then the Lock button separately
