Kendo Kamae - Putting The Theory Into Practice
What is Mi Gamae? What is Ki Gamae ? What is Tame ?
In this video I discuss some of the key componenets to building strong kamae for Kendo. We'll look at the theory behind each concept and the physical applications.
We'll also cover some drills and areas of your training where you can actively focus on building Tame and as a consequence strong fumikiri and strong fumikomi so that you strikes , techniques and strategies can be more effective in Ji Keiko and Shiai.
Whether you practice Chudan, Jodan or Nito, these concepts are universally benificial to your training.

I got an interesting theory, so humor me for a sec, it goes something like this, according to Andy fisher, tame in simple terms is the readiness to strike. and according this this video Tame has 2 components, ki gamae (the mental preparedness to strike) and mi gamae (the physical readiness to strike ex back leg tension). and the purpose of zanshin is to keep ki gamae and mi gamae at all times. The interesting thing is that if we have tame at all times, then it means any movement we do could be interpreted as a seme by our opponent since with tame we are ready to strike at all given time. So we don't have to be consciously thinking about seme, and just allow our body to make those decisions, and this is results in the concept of mushin?

Yes. I believe this is what we see when we watch something like Hanshi No Bu at the Kyoto Taikai or the All Japan 8th Dan championships. In such high levels of skill, the ability to maintain such a high level of focus results in a seemless embodiment of these concepts. They're no longer evident as being separate or manifesting independently. Rather there is a full integration. I believe this is why many 8th Dans talk about the challenge not being about the opponent anymore but rather the challenge comes from within (when challenging for the 8th). They're so aware and so experienced in observing the opponent that the last obstacles that remain are the ones in their own mind. Hence the term "no mind".

You can make your men strike faster do not let your shinai dip behind your back. Check what your right hand does.
