Until the Napoleonic Wars, Windsbach was part of the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, ruled by a cadet branch of the Hohenzollern family. This is the reason why this part of Bavaria is predominently Protestant, (and the choir is sponsored by the Protestant (Evangelisch-Lutherische) church). St. Gumbertus church, originally Catholic, served as the official church of the Margrave until Ansbach was annexed by Bavaria, and is now the Protestant parish church of
Ansbach.
