I'm surprised you left the stock exhaust on. Not only heavy, but it runs SOO Hot!!!

I changed it with Arrow exhaust, the heat decreased and the sound became better😎

Wow, that bike has a ton of stuff on it. Appreciate all the cost effective product development Rocky Mountain has done. I have a 701 and need those cool LED turn signals, the stockers are ugly as sin. The seat is a great mod as is adding a small windshield.
A free mod worth considering for these bikes is removing the kickstand sensor and magnet and securely storing them under the seat. Why? Because the sensor is down low and if a rock takes it out the bike is DOA with no trailside fix possible, spicing the wires on the "Hall Effect" sensor won't work. Of course this makes it possible to ride with the stand down, but if one is riding a beast like this I suspect they are able to manage their kickstand properly.
Another freebie is to do the same with the rear ABS sensor, which disables ABS and TC full time, as both are a disaster in the dirt and I can live without them on the street. Your mileage may vary on that.
A low cost must do mod is to replace the 215F fan switch in the radiator with a 185F switch. The fan will run all the time when riding slowly off road but that is better than cooking the engine, and the charging system handles it fine. Figure that the coolant is 15 to 20F cooler at the bottom of the radiator where the switch is, so it is more like 230 to 235F coming into the radiator before the fan comes on. That is just way too hot.
Finally, changing the exhaust and flashing the ECU makes this engine an entirely different animal. My 701 gained so much low end and part throttle response after tuning it that I wound up gearing it 16/45 (stock is 15/46) which coincidentally puts the gearing spread on par with stock on the SMC-R model and a DR650. The quick shifter works better and at 70 it is turning 4.7K instead of 5.1K per the Gearing Commander website. 1st is a little tall in the tight stuff but the power increase is such that it handles it fine, and 2nd gear throttle up (no bouncing or clutching needed) wheelies are stupid easy to initiate from as low as 20 MPH. Gotta love that, my standups are up to nearly 1/4 mile now 😆
If ya don't want to go that far, get an O2 sensor delete dongle and exhaust and it runs a lot better. A full tune is nuts though, these engines are very choked up in stock form.

All good mods, thanks for your feedback! We've had several 690s/701s here at Rocky and a bunch of our employees own them, they're rad bikes that you can build to suit your riding style pretty easily. Thanks for watching!

Awesome build, now you need a set of Motion Footpegs to ride in comfort all day long. Just saying….

I was amazed how much better the 690 runs with a Wings muffler.
I thought it would just be lighter and not so hot to touch. It wakes the bike up big time also.
And IS 7 lbs lighter than the Cat equipped oem muffler.

I'm fishing info on a new bike. I got the 890 's', got it as dirt focused as I could get it & I'm being told I've over riding my suspension. I need to put a few grand into it too make it "good enough" and a few more to make it good for what I like to do. So, I'm selling it getting a bike better suited for my needs. Both the fe500s & 701 huskys variants are in my sights along with the 500 beta rs. I'm sure I'm asking the wrong people - but are you worried about ktm with the announcements & rumors that have been popping up? Specifically, talks of major layoffs & sale of the company.

Not worried. ...We do a lot of two-track on the 890's and absolutely love them. You must be going on some gnarly off-road stuff if you are down sizing. -Charles

@rmatvmc ya, my dealerships head mechanic called me a nutcase borderline lunatic after watching my video so he could tell me what I needed for new suspension. I either needed to find 1.09kg/mm springs which we couldn't find for my forks & 14.75 shock spring that i did find, buy closed cartridge suspension that could work or buy xplor suspension & customize that to make it work for the nonsense I'm doing. The cost of a new bike after trade-in is pretty similar to buying brand new suspension 😆 but that's my own fault, I couldn't find an 890 adv R within 100 miles back in 2022 & opted for the last 890 in the area which was a 's'.
I don't do much highway anymore & I'm on motoz s/t tires front & back: 90/100 21/ 120/90 18 & running a stupidly narrow 14-47 gearing which is very efficient but you'll need to ride a lot off road to get used to, it's not casual rider gearing. I hit a lot of single-track & hill climbs in deep sand, mud & hardpack now & Getting a bike that's half the weight would be nice since I solo ride. I've gotten trapped under my bike a few times. That being said A nice thing about heel float in the tech 7's you can slide out of them when you're under the bike. With all that said the 500 or 690 probably makes sense to go to instead of new suspension

@@houjous5131 Eventually, if you ride an 890 or 790 hard enough in the dirt, the bike will bite you.
Ive got an 890R and have ridden dirtbikes most all my life. 470lbs is too much.
The R suspension needs re-doing on 890's. I put a Tractive shock on mine, stock was horrible no matter what reviewers say. But then I got a 21 690 R, it works great. Stock suspension is not bad at all, softly sprung and damped for the most part. A much better dirtbike than an 890 could ever be, by far.
Did I spend a chunk setting up the 690, yup. Its well worth it. Stock muffler/Cat has to go right away.

@@houjous5131 You don't have to do gnarly offroad to find the limits of a ktm 890. I don't class myself as a crazy offroad rider. I used to have a 890 and now a tenere extreme equipped with Rebel xplorer tyres (basicly mx tyres) and I ride enduro events with it. I'm also on the verge of going for a pure enduro as I keep finding the limit on the big bikes. But they are rewarding aswel getting them through places where only enduro's are riding

@rmatvmc I have a few of my videos on this channel I'm looking to get more aggressive offroad next season.
