The steam locomotive is the eighth wonder of the world. What a beautiful invention. Without the steam locomotive half of what we have in America and Europe would not be available.
Wales is in the Western hemisphere, Richard Trevithick's locomotive ran on tracks in rails. The East/West runs through Greenwich. So no American railway can claim to be the first railway in the Western hemisphere.
RIP to Bob Hutchinson, Bob Patterson, Tom Shore, Bernie O’Brien, Seth Corwin, Bill Withuhn, and not pictured: Bill Jenkins, Hugo Lochman, and Norman Cole.
The railway is an English invention -The tracks, train, engine and railways were all invented and set up by English people (Richard Trevithick invented the steam engine used in Locomotives (James watt played no part in the railway)) Steam engine - Thomas Newcomen Steam locomotive - Richard Trevithick First practical steam locomotive - John Blenkinsop Railway tracks - (Iron) John Birkinshaw - (Steel) Robert Mushet Stockton and Darlington Railway - First public railway
It just goes to show just how old this series is. Since this was made, many steam locomotives have been restored to operating conditions like the UP Big Boy 4014 and the C&O 1309
loved this video, love the history and what these trains accomplished for America, what really is unbelievable is thet there were 35 people who thumbs downed it to me thats disgusting regardless of reason.
By their nature, steam engines have quite a bit of torque. However, many 4-4-0 locomotives were designed less for torque and more for speed. With large driving wheels and short piston strokes, they were able to go farther on less fuel and water.
cvsrrailfan, from now on, you're my Best TH-cam Friend For Life, Because: I Love Steam Locomotives So Much. and I want to be a Steam Locomotive Engineer when I turn 30-Years-Old. After All, I am a 20-Year-Old Male Adult on My Last 3 Months of School. So I'm Almost Free Until June 2016.
I wish my hometown of Oneonta, New York which is 1 hour and 50 minutes away from Scranton, Pennsylvania and had the largest roundhouse in the world and many old Railroad Shops and now only one building left and no museum to remember the Steam Locomotives. When I was little I wished Thomas The Tank Engine would come save Oneonta.
most of the diesel were equipped with surplus submarine diesel engines that were made for world war II subs some even came from scrapped submarines that saw combat
I'm a huge fan of Steam Engines they run on coal and water the fireman puts coal in the steam engines then the boiler makes hot water steam rises to the steam Dom then travels into a piston called the piston it's turns the the wheels backward and frontward that's how run
Probably because it had a thin layer of coal in the firebox, and was working pretty well, drawing efficiently on the fire. If she's pushing out thick, black smoke it suggests the fireman's just put a fresh load on.
If you mean the outside of the cylinder, nothing !! There is a jacket over the real cylinder's outer wall. The shiney black metal is the jacket...It'd just be warm....
Many people always talk about the inefficiency of steamers is factor what make them died, but i don't fully believe it...in my opinion not all diesels are efficient and so as steams not all steams are expensive to operate...i love all steams and diesels, they are fascinating, but steamers more unique, steam engine looks like has a soul
Yeah, they are cool and remind us a more romantic age of train travel. Unfortunately, real steam powered train engines, are by today's standards, slow and inefficient, not to mention dirty and loud. Add to that the necessity to have the infrastructure to supply coal and water to the engines at regular intervals. The U.S. passenger rail system has fallen seriously behind in terms of coverage and speed. Our fastest trains travel a fraction of the speed of those in France, Japan, and China. Now that I've gone seriously off-topic, let me apologize to everyone and shut-up.
They don't run on steam, they run on wood, coal, dung, whatever. Even at their best, they were inefficient beyond the extreme. BUT... they do look cool doing it. However, everything cool about steam engines in trains is made trivial by their use in ships and stationary power for mills. Those applications made, and still do make, trains look trivial by comparison. But, let's not diss steam too much. All nuclear systems use steam technology, including aircraft carriers and submarines. Nuclear trains, anyone?
We have nuclear powered locomotive's today, the electric locomotives. No one will build a nuclear powered locomotive where the nuclear power is on the locomotive because of the potential for accidents.
They ran on water and a fuel, which creates steam. They aren't useful now, but that statement is like saying the iPhone 11 is better than the iPhone. Of Course the newer one is better, but at its time, they revolutionized in their era. For steam locomotives, they made travel faster and comfortable, they made the labour of moving cargo across the country many times faster, easier, and comfortable. Nowadays they are very much obsolete, but they paved the way for their successors. For iPhones, we wouldn't have had touch screens. Every day you at least see a touchscreen. Now try living without it.
There are several inherent dangers with an independent nuclear powered locomotive. For instance, failure to properly maintain and handle it could result in a nuclear disaster much like what happened at Chernobyl. If it gets into a wreck, it could likely cause a catastrophic explosion killing many within several miles of the wreckage.
Unfortunately you forgot the invention of the Frenchman Denis Papin (1647-1712) He was the first to build a (bad)working steamengine, but it was a steamengine. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Papin
What little info this video has on the earliest locomotives has factual errors, omits the first American Locomotive, Stevens' 1825 steam wagon of New Jersey, it omits the famous Tom Thumb, West Point, Best Friend of Charleston, all the Norris types, early Baldwins, Rogers, etc, etc, virtually nothing about the pre-Civil war types. A You tuber working in his basement could make a 10 times better video than this virtually worthless drivel. Even the so called historians they interview should be given a swift kick in the pants, told to get their belongings from their offices , and shown the door before they get charged for fraud. Give this video a BIG THUMBS DOWN!
Steam engines were to make it easier to get water out of coal mines. Steam engines were successful when each part was the exact same. This is all nonsense.
2:53 that's a Missouri Kansas Texas railroad class H-3 pacific! That's extremely rare footage of Katy Railroad Steam, especially in color!

They need to make this on DVD. I used to watch it on VHS when it was still at my local library.
A PART OF MY REPORT IN MY DOCTORAL CLASS. THANKS TO THE UPLOADER!
Must have been a great school to offer a PhD in that subject. Nowadays, it's 18th Century Lesbo Art or the like.
LOVING the Steamtown coverage here...

My great grandfather drove a steam locomotive in the 1940s and he worked on the CB&Q
Great Series for those who don't know much about trains and their history !
RIP to Bob Hutchinson, Bob Patterson, Tom Shore, Bernie O’Brien, Seth Corwin, Bill Withuhn, and not pictured: Bill Jenkins, Hugo Lochman, and Norman Cole.
In France they use axles for the wheel arrangement
so a 4-4-0 would be classified as a 2-2-0 in France.
2-2-0 like train from Hugo 2011
I always loved the late 40s and early 50s because the 1st gen and 2nd gen diesels came but the steam was still there
i haven't seen trains unlimited FOR SO LONG!! childhood
I can't believe they got to interview O. Winston link!
:( RIP Hutchinson and Patterson. You will forever be remembered.
2:54 *That's a Missouri Kansas Texas (MKT) passenger train at the bottom*

Railway tracks - (Iron) John Birkinshaw - (Steel) Robert Mushet
Stockton and Darlington Railway - First public railway
Hamish Wallace James watt invented the steam engine used in mines and factories not the rail engines
I thought that's what I comprehended from the documentary also Nathaniel Wilbanks. Thanks
It just goes to show just how old this series is. Since this was made, many steam locomotives have been restored to operating conditions like the UP Big Boy 4014 and the C&O 1309

I've been looking for this documentary since I was like 5 I'm 18 the search was tough but I intend to thourouly enjoy this wonderful documentary
loved this video, love the history and what these trains accomplished for America, what really is unbelievable is thet there were 35 people who thumbs downed it to me thats disgusting regardless of reason.
Disgusting.!?
What makes it disgusting? Are you sure you're using the right terminology. I believe not. Please explain, thank you...
My local medical centre was the factory where the Stourbridge Lion was built. Was the oldest continuous foundry in the World.
Remember watching this as a kid
Steam will always rule Supreme in the locomotive history
See. They say those early 4-4-0s had only 50 hp. But they had a boatload of torque.
By their nature, steam engines have quite a bit of torque. However, many 4-4-0 locomotives were designed less for torque and more for speed. With large driving wheels and short piston strokes, they were able to go farther on less fuel and water.
I remembet watching dis as a toddler
RIP at 3:17. He will forever be remembered.
I WANT THE MUSIC!!!!!!
All steam locomotives are badass in my book
Just 240p??? come on man, you're killing me!!
i remember this video like 6 or 7 years ago

what year is this show from?
Wut, Thomas and friends are a cartoon about steam locomotives and there is even songs
I wish my hometown of Oneonta, New York which is 1 hour and 50 minutes away from Scranton, Pennsylvania and had the largest roundhouse in the world and many old Railroad Shops and now only one building left and no museum to remember the Steam Locomotives. 11:19, what did the guy said. I think he a conductor.
I'm a huge fan of Steam Engines they run on coal and water the fireman puts coal in the steam engines then the boiler makes hot water steam rises to the steam Dom then travels into a piston called the piston it's turns the the wheels backward and frontward that's how run
I Like The History Of Trains
I love steam
But the 1st most steam locomotives were now rebuilt 4 display age at different places Like San Jose D.D. Station.
Bro this Thomas the train all over again
Why did the Rocket breathe yellow smoke?
Probably because it had a thin layer of coal in the firebox, and was working pretty well, drawing efficiently on the fire. If she's pushing out thick, black smoke it suggests the fireman's just put a fresh load on.
I LOVE I LOVE I LOVE TRAINS UNLIMITED SO MUCH! ;-)
Long Live cvsrrailfan and Steam Locomotives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
DON'T DELETE THOSE VIDEOS! :D
I wonder when you touch the piston what would happen
Nothing. Quit playing Minecraft and learn.
You'd burn your hand.
If you mean the outside of the cylinder, nothing !! There is a jacket over the real cylinder's outer wall. The shiney black metal is the jacket...It'd just be warm....
How about diesel footage
3:17

I Agree with the TH-cam Likes, That Train Unlimited TV Series Rocks!!!! ;-)
The closest thing that we may ever get to man made life (not human babys) is the steam engine
they need to bring them back hell with the diesel engines

I once heard that someone made a Nuclear car back in the 60s or 70s.

DAYLIGHT 😀😀😀😀😀😀
I Could Watch Trains Unlimited on TH-cam Until The End of Time! ;-)
5:00
Fire in a coal mine? Are you joking?
Yes - they could, did and have caught on fire - I believe there's one in America which is likely to burn for a couple of centuries.
Diesels put a lot of men out of work and killed many towns

No real history start - all museum history only.
boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo diels woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow steams enges
No messing about over in the US soon as loco goes for scrape they cut it up
disels are way better than steam engines.
Howard Xing in terms of emissions control and improved technology yes but in terms of raw tractive effort and power, steam is king
HOWARD XING SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great... 240p yet again .

OK, I had similar thoughts about the lack of very historic stuff, but this is live, 12" to the foot scale working steam. Enjoy it!

Jingoistic nonsense!
