    That was an interesting audio book observation. The simple truth about reading using your eyes is that you simply must focus on the text and can't do anything else. No vacuuming the floor, doing laundry or driving. Using your eyes your attention is fixed without distractions. No nautical books? Gasp!! Just for that I must admit I don't read fantasy but still enjoy your channel. King Rat by Clavell is fantastic.

    Love Narnia and I agree with you that The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe are the way to start. It’s the perfect hook into that series.

    I'm with you in that I love how imaginative the Elric stories are! The publication process or format for some older fantasy stories was often more disjunct when compared to what we currently see. I think the same was the case for Conan stories. Many were published in magazines, so there is no perfect reading order. A Darkness at Sethanon sounds fun!

    Some of the Audiobooks are multi cast.
    The Graphic Audio adaptations for Sanderson, Riyiria and now Red Rising.
    The new Discworld Audiobooks
    Also Good Omens and Dune

      I've done a few of the Star Wars audiobooks with multiple cast members and enjoyed those. They kind of harken back to the radio dramas of old.

    I have read C. S Lewis's Horse and the Boy. Its still my least favorite in the series due to its slow pace and boring protagonists, lol. Aravis reminds my favorite character in the story. Your thoughts on Lewis's work is quite great.

    The best 'audiobooks' were the dramas that used to play on the radio. They had a full ensemble of voice actors, sound effects, and background ambience! It was great, and I remember listening to one for a Sherlock Holmes story as a kid.

    Great wrap-up, Josh! I just read the first Elric book and it is such a a treat to dive into this world. Can't wait to get further in the saga. I appreciate your reflections on the audiobook vs text. I do both, but find that not all books lend themselves well to the audiobook experience. But the "lost on translation" thing is of course something every reader has to deal with at some point, unless you only stick to books written in your own language. There is a barrier between you and the author that you have to navigate around. My May book of the month? Dark Age by Pierce Brown. Or Cornwell's Winter King. Such good books! Have a great June! /Minna

    Great video, as usual! I remember that when I read Narnia, when I was about 10-12, "The horse and his boy" was my favorite of the series (A talking horse!). I didn't read any of the other books you've read, but I am ordering several books from my local book store, and feeling the desire to read non-fantasy books I've decided to order 2 of your favorite books, basing it on your great video about your favorite book: "The Summer guest" and "Life after life". I am reading "Children of Dune" right now and just LOVING it! And also spend an afternoon reading "Of mice and men" and was again amazed how good Steinbeck is. Will be happy the have recommendations from you about contemporary (20th century) American authors (I am not from the USA).

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I hope you love both The Summer Guest and Life After Life! I guess some other contemporary non-SFF American authors I enjoy would be Richard Russo (Empire Falls is a great one), Michael Connelly (if you enjoy crime fiction), Donna Tartt (The Goldfinch and The Secret History are great) and John Irving, although he happens to be VERY inconsistent in my eyes.

    I need to read more Moorcock since i thoroughly enjoyed Fortress of the Pearl. I know a lot of people wont read him because of his thoughts on Tolkien but personally, i think they're missing out.
    I kept trying but I've finally come to accept that i just don't enjoy audiobooks. I'm definitely not one of those that think they dont count as reading. They definitely do. But audiobooks have never enchanced the reading experience for me and more often than not took away from my enjoyment.
    Not an issue with audiodramas though. I could listen to those all day if i wanted.
    I haven't read Shogun but i do own Tai-Pan which I've been told is perfectly okay to read as a standalone so I'll likely make that my first Clavell.
    May was my best reading month in awhile.
    *Fantasy*
    Kithimar 1: Age of Ash / Daniel Abraham
    - I want to read this again after the next book comes out because Abraham is so good at layering and foreshadowing. But as is I really enjoyed it. Sammish stole the book for me but I also liked Alys' arc. Abraham's character work is so underrated.
    *Grimdark Fantasy*
    Black Company / Glen Cook (re-read)
    Black Company 2: Shadows Linger
    Black Company 3: White Rose
    - I'm glad I gave this series another chance. I appreciated Book 1 more on re-read, retried Shadows Linger and it was excellent and so was White Rose.
    *Steampunk Fantasy*
    Shadows of the Apt 1: Empire in Black & Gold
    - It's been a bit since I last read Tchaikovsky and I'm glad I'm finally reading his Fantasy epic. BUGS!
    *Thriller*
    No Country for Old Men / Cormac McCarthy
    - Anton Chigurh, what a villain. My book of the month.
    The Wasp Factory / Iain Banks
    - Banks is my personal favourite Sci-Fi author so thought I'd finally give his non Sci-Fi work a go. Pretty messed up. Still dunno how I feel about the climax and resolution though.

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can definitely read Tai-Pan by itself, and I think all 6 books in his Asian saga you can say the same. I really need to read Daniel Abraham at some point, and will likely start with the Long Price Quartet. And I agree with you about Moorcock - his is definitely a voice worth reading, whether you agree with his thoughts on Tolkien and the genre in general.

    Sounds like you had a pretty good overall month, Josh! I’m here for your audiobook argument. I am somebody who is not too pick my when it comes to narrators, unless they are just objectively not good. However, I typically use audiobooking to get to some books that I would like to get to but just don’t have, or done have time to fit in physically. I deliver pizzas so I use that time to get a lot of audiobooking done.
    I like to save big priority series for physical reading for the exact reason you said, I wanna experience it as Colin. Now, sometimes I will do some immersive reading, but if it’s a big series I usually make sure to do at least the first book straight physically because by that time I’ve created my own imaginings and I can usually get around how the narrator does it if I’ve already created my own. A good example of this for me is the Greenbone Saga and Liveships. I did not vibe with either of those narrators at first, but came back to them later in the series after reading a lot physically and didn’t mind it nearly as much. Great video, and happy reading man!

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Colin, it sounds like what I've started to do with audiobooks is similar to what you are doing. Saving the important things for the reading experience but using audio books for commuting time and things like that. I do need to make a better effort at identifying the audiobook narrators I like, though!

    Hi Josh. I enjoyed Fevre Dream by GRRM some time ago. I hope to revisit it. For most of May I struggled with my vision due to a prolonged wait for new glasses. I read the best-selling horror novella Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw, and Kate: The Life of Katharine Hepburn by Charles Higham. I found the novella to be a mixed bag, points for using Japanese folklore for inspiration, but imo, it didn't stick the landing. The bio was fascinating, as I always enjoy reading about creatives at work. Kate was more involved in shaping her projects than I knew.

    Glad you enjoyed the Narnia and Elric stories!
    In May I finished «The Dervish House» by Ian McDonald, «The Little Emperors» by Alfred Duggan, «The Veiled Throne» by Ken Liu (book #3 in the «Dandelion Dynasty», it is a real chunker at about 1000 pages and I had to reread several pages and paragraphs, they are so good!) and I also read «Sailor of the Sea of Fate» by Michael Moorcock (in the «Elric Saga»), and I see now my edition also included «The Weird of the Wolf». He is not the existentialist hero Conan and many S&S heroes, as a doomed hero of Greek Tragedy by larger forces then himself, or a self-destructive Byronic Romantic Anti-hero! So for me «The Dreaming City» is the most central Elric story, the tragedy all his stories turns around.
    I only bought one book, «The Children of Gods and Fighting Men» by Shauna Lawless, with the very lovely red cover design! But I will get to «Bold Ascension» by Vaughn Roycroft and «The Prophet of Edan» by Philip Chase as soon as they are released!
    I had to push «Speaking Bones» by Ken Liu (book #4 and final book of the «Dandelion Dynasty») and «The Conscience of the King» by Alfred Duggan (Digital Redd: Set during the Anglo Saxon Migration and the creation of the Kingdom of Wessex) from my May TBR (at least starting them), but have started on them just now!

  • @bradleymier2167
    @bradleymier2167 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regards to audiobooks, I think it depends - some people prefer the “bland” narration style where all the voices sound the same. I don’t! I think audiobooks are the best when the character voices are quite distinct. Some of my favorites in terms of narration are the First Law, Tales of the Ketty Jay, and the Star Wars books read by Marc Thompson.

    • @bradleymier2167
      @bradleymier2167 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that sometimes the print experience is better, but I sometimes prefer the audiobook experience (depending on narration). Graphic Audio audiobooks are usually well done - full cast, sounds effects, etc.

Ecología de Poblaciones (population ecology -sort of name in English-) by Jorge Soberón. 4. The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton (My book of the month). 5. The gambler by Fiodor Dostoievski (i'm still in the Russian reading mood 😅). 6. obsession by John Douglas ( FBI profiler) I liked better Mindhunter but it's a good read. Have a Nice sunday ❤.
