Btw, being Hispanic or Latino is not a race, but, rather, an ethnicity. We are made up of many beautiful different colors, from many nations. He sings in a very neutral and formal Mexican Spanish accent but one can also hear a slight Flamenco vibrato inherited from his Spaniard father who was also a singer. I think it is this mix of cultures that is what sounds to you as Portuguese, though it is anything but Portuguese. Luis, being an immigrant to Mexico as a kid, one can hear his Iberian accent and Flamenco singing-style more clearly at the start of his career in videos from that age and that accent has mostly disappeared through the years.

He has fantastic sustain and he is very known for his iconic tone in his mid and upper register. His voice is also very recording friendly. I don't know if you guys know this fantastic funk group, but he had Tower of Power's hornline and rhythm section in his song Que Nivel de Mujer off his album Aries. He did a lot of funky stuff when he was younger and slowly transitioned to this slower more romantic stuff as he got older. He sounds fantastic either way, and he always mixed the two styles live for his concerts.

I first found out about Luis Miguel while watching the movie Speechless in the early 90s and although I didn’t know Spanish I was amazed at his voice. Fast forward to today, I have 10+ albums of his, saw him in concert twice, and my wife and I will be seeing him again this month in Dallas. Luis Miguel is without a doubt my favorite singer!!
