Restoration of a Very Rare Axe. You Have Never Seen Such An Ax!

- Hello everyone and welcome to my channel, today I am restoring a very rare and rusty ax!
I have never seen such an ax, there is only a photo of this ax on the Internet, but no one it written anything about its history. This time I went on a mini hike to get an ax handle. I liked the result and I hope you enjoy this video!
I’m in agreement with a couple of the other comments it’s a stone mason’s axe used for working down a surface before finally tooling flat with either a hand held bolster ( a wide chisel type tool) or a finishing axe which has no teeth. Typically the face being worked flat was vertical when using axe type tools. Modern masons tend to use hand held Claw tools with replaceable bits powered by a hand held malt or with an air gun. the face being worked in the horizontal plane. usually on a masons banker or bench

I was thinking that I had seen similar tools on a tour of one of the old gold mines in bendigo, Victoria.
Absolutely is been a monumental stonemason for over 36 years hey one of these in my tool bag so to speak
It is a stone Masson axe. My grandfather was a Masson, and he had one. It is used to grove and cut stone, bricks, and such. A Handy tool to have.
Very interesting, many people wrote to me that their grandfathers and great-grandfathers used this tool.

I didn't know what it was exactly, but I knew it was definitely rare.
Bis heute wird es benutzt, vielleicht in leicht veränderter Form.

Love the layers the blacksmith used to create this. I have a blacksmith made chisel/hammer that was my great grandfathers, possibly older. He was born in 1859 and died 1917.
Yes, these layers look very nice, so I did not sand this surface. It would be interesting to look at your instrument of your ancestors.
Superb manual choreography. The movements and the sounds are as riveting as Russian ballet. Bravo to the young restorer. If only there were people in Congress like him who would retrieve and restore our rusted institutions to their original brilliance so they are again beautiful and functional.

Maybe a Mason's Crandall Hammer. The main difference I am seeing is the axe you restored has flat teeth where a Mason's Crandall Hammer has pointed teeth. A 19th century stone mason's tool used for dressing soft building stones.

Yes it’s for dressing the stone face, and the modern is only 1 inch wide 25mm for us in UK, good job on the repair
These tools come with flat teeth for softer stone and with pointed teeth for harder stone.

I think you did a perfectly appropriate restoration of this. As a stone masons tool I imagine it would have more sharp pointed teeth before it started to wear down.

My grandfather was a master builder and I used to hang around some of his work sites as a kid (about 7-8 years old). One of the buildings he was working on had a limestone facade and I distinctly remember the stone masons using a single edge tool quite similar to this. Great restoration.

I did some digging online and found it. It is a Toothed Stone Axe. They are used by stone masons to shape or break stone.

As others suggested, used for dressing stone. With the reconstruction of Notre Dame, this is one of many Medieval skills that is enjoying a brief renaissance.

Overkill. I think it had a beautiful patina on it that only time could create. Buff it up a little, put on a new handle and let the history and time of the piece show.

stone axe most definitely, cousin in england is a stone mason. looks almost identical to his grandfathers hand down.

Thought it was an axe till I saw this comment. After googling it, a tool called the stone splitter looked similar with the teeth. Like you use an axe to split logs. You could use this maybe to split rock. Just a guess, I have no experience or knowledge as a stone mason.
It’s similar to a scutch hammer. My grandfather was a stonemason and he had a great collection of these and similar tools for cutting, splitting and shaping stone.

das gute stück nennt sich "Zahnfläche " zittat :"So finden z.B. Hämmer, die mit beiden Händen geführt und deren verschiedene Arbeitsflächen je nach Gesteinart (Granit, Sandstein, Kalkstein) eingesetzt werden, heute noch Verwendung. Eines der ältesten Geräte ist der Zweispitz (1). Daneben diente zur Oberflächenbearbeitung die Zahnfläche (2), der Stockammer (3) und in jüngerer Zeit der so genannte Kröne (4), dessen Meißel zum Schärfen ausgewechselt werden können." zu finden auf der seiten von den ingolstadt stadtmuseum -> scheuerer -> museum -> r-36-021 da gibt es auch das bild zusehen wo die werkzeugen zu zu sehen sind.

it does indeed look like a style of massonary axe. but it kinda seems to me like someone needed that kind of axe and decided to modify a regular axe into one.
but..i dont know for sure.
That is a stone axe for smoothing surface of stone blocks.
Most of the modern ones I have seen have a flat, more axe like blade on one side. The toothed edge may have pointed teeth or flat ones shaped similarly to a toothed chisel. They have both architectural and a sculptural uses.

That axe looks like it was hand forged. Maybe it is a splitting maul for limestone?? Of for splitting softer wood's.

That is an einsparenspleibe "splicing axe"! Due to the birch and ash trees in the Rhine Valley in Germany having stringy sinew, in the 1600's the people of that area came up with this unique style of axe! The formation of the stratification of the head made it easier to chop the trees into pieces.......but actually..I'm completely full of shit and made that all up!

I'm not sure what kind of axe it used to be, but now it is for decoration only, since you ruined any heat treatment it used to have on the side you welded on.
I think the bent tooth and missing one should have been left as they were.

ein kleiner tip von mir als schlosser die richtige schmiede temperatur ist zwischen 700° und 1200° =^.^= nicht wie bei 6:02 bei ca 500°. wenn du mal wider das schmieden willst sollte der stahl die farbe von einer orange haben dann hast du die richtige temperartur und wenn er blut rot ist must du ihn wider erwärmen

This looks like a stone mason dental axe. They don't make them double bearded anymore unless a good blacksmith may produce one on customer's special request

It's a shame that those pits were so deep. A smooth polish with nickle plating would have looked awesome.

Get yourself a blasting cabinet, fill it with "crushed glass" 60-100 mesh, then clean such a part as this video provided, save time, get better results and more flexibility.
