- Day 20 - We packed up and left Airlie, driving through to Yeppoon with only a short stop for lunch at Clairview (which is a really nice little spot on the beach). We got some rain during the drive, which was a first for the trip, it’s been so dry. They also had the NRL grand final on the outdoor big screen at the caravan park… Great close game!
Day 21 - What an epic day. In Mel’s words, “Best. Day. Ever!” Definitely have to come back to Yeppoon to do it properly, one day is not enough. We jumped onto the ferry to Great Keppel Island in the morning. Went for a reef tour on a glass-bottomed boat, had a sausage sizzle on board the ferry, then went out snorkelling… it was amazing and we say/swam with an enormous turtle!! Finished the island day off with some free time on the beach and a beverage at the bar. Back on the mainland we had a lovely dinner with a couple of cocktails at The Spinnaker (sailing club). Tom’s parmi was huge!
Day 22 - Getting toward the home stretch. Left Yeppoon and drove through to (almost) Bundaberg. Set up at Splitters Farm just outside of Bundy, which is a really rad little farm stay. Qld school holidays finished the previous day, so we almost had the place to ourselves. Shout out also to the Red Rocket Diner (/food truck) at Bororen for lunch on the way through. Best pie I think I’ve ever had.
Day 23 - Visited the Bundaberg Barrel, where they brew all their soft drinks. Checked out their little museum and did a tasting of their full range. After that we move onto the Bundaberg Distillery, again checking out the museum (very cool, lots of history), and sampling a couple of rums and liqueurs… drinking before lunch haha!! Then a lazy afternoon at the farm (including naps all around).
Days 24 & 25 - Last stop on the big trip, we had a lovely couple of days at Mum and Dad’s at Crows Nest Qld, and Linday came out with the boys to meet us again! Unfortunately we weren’t the best company, having picked up a bit of a stomach bug somewhere, but it was still awesome to see them all!
Day 26 - The final day of our epic holiday. Big full day in the car to get home, rounding us off at 5557km travelled in 78 hours of driving time for the whole trip. Fuel economy was better than expected towing the camper all that way at 12.9L/100km. Of course we had to stop for some bakery treats at Fernvale on the way through as well. We were all happy to be home and comfy in our own beds, with some awesome memories to keep.
