    Super lesson.
    Task A:
    1.Van Gough's paintings are of great value figurately but not literally. A person who recently bought one of his works would not have paid a low price.
    2. I would say that video and tape recorders are considered as outdated technology in this century. No one uses those antiquated entertainment devices any more. This is a good thing, for the days of tapes getting chewed up in those machines are over. Secondly, record players have been confined to museums as CD players have replaced them entirely.
    3. Dedication and knowledge are of upmost importance in language instruction.
    4. The news seems to fascinate many, but I have no interest in it whatsoever. When the news starts to send out positive and not totally depressing messages, I may change my opinion. Until then, I' will watch reruns of On the Buses instead. Watching that never makes me upset.
    Task B:
    Michael J Fox is of Canadian descent, but those outside of the States find it difficult to differentiate between his accent and that of an American. I am of the opinion that Michael is a talented and versatile actor.

      Thanks for sharing your answers. My thoughts:
      1. Yes, famous paintings are astronomically expensive.
      2. Ha ha. Only us older folk remember our audio cassettes getting chewed up and the horror of pulling out the tape. CD players are on the way out too.
      3. Good answer! Typo: utmost
      4. Yes, the news can be depressing, but I can't turn it off completely.
      MJF -- Good example! Love his work.

      Yes, we can use a noun followed by the preposition “of.” In this lesson, I’m sharing the structure BE OF, so there’s no noun before the prepositional phrase.
      Compare: Kindness is of great value.

    What does the structure " be + of + noun " mean ?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Each structure has its use and meaning. I wanted to call attention to this grammatical structure:
      be of (any) help
      be of (some) importance
      [Something] is of the essence.
      We're connecting someone or something to a quality or concept.

    Hi Jennifer, is there a difference between something is of the essence or something is essential? Many thanks.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Catherine. It’s much more common to say something is essential. “…is/are of the essence” is reserved for a serious statement. It means that something is crucial. Like not wasting time when surgery is urgently needed.

    I feel that you tend to pronounce the of in BE OF as av instead of schwa + v as usually, is my feeling correct?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Of" has a schwa. /əv/
      "Be" has a long "e" sound /i/.
      "The" uses a schwa before a consonant sound and a long "e" before a vowel sound. I feel that I follow the usual patterns.

    Hi Jennifer. I know that Madonna is of italian descent (by her father's side) and of canadian descent (by her mother).
    In portuguese we mistakingly say: I'm of the philosophy that...
    It's wrong because although philosophy is a science made up of different researchers and "thinkers", such as Aristoteles, Sokrates and Platon, philosophy is not synonym of opinion, is not something individual. Do you say that in English?
    Thank you!!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thiago. Yes, I knew Madonna was of Italian descent, but I didn't know if she was a mix of nationalities. Note we say "on her father's side" and "on her mother's side."
      I'm of the opinion that each person can have their own philosophy and make their own conclusions. :) We don't have that expression with "philosophy," but I like it. :)

    Can we say time is the essence, acting as subject complement?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I almost feel that "of the essence" is idiomatic or at least a collocation, so I wouldn't want to reword the idea. "Time is of the essence." That's how we express the idea. The prepositional phrase serves as the subject complement.
